ITT: We post screens that showcase the visual charisma lost by modern Simpsons

Keep buying them until you don't enjoy them anymore, and not before.

Fuck this hard limit crap.

Obviously, but dude asked for a ballpark. For me that ballpark is around season ten even though there's a handful of episodes I like in eleven and twelve. I guess "keep buying them until you stop enjoying them" works well enough as general advice, but it doesn't really answer the question.

It's official -- all the best episodes have Bart's mouth off model.
The weird thing is, Matt Groening didn't like these off-model shots very much, and it's stated in some of the DVD commentaries how he hated when the series went "too cartoony". So Groening himself is in part to blame for the animation becoming boring.

Can someone PLEASE post a screen or PM me with a screen of the kid who says "LOVE ME!" to Lisa (I believe) possibly in the episode where she plays stupid to be cool or whatever? Thanks in advance. I'd love it if you had the caption from the show saying Love me as well.

What was the ep where Burns does that?

That's the thing. These people were once fantastic at coming up with great, influential humor, but they've also always been pretty bad at noticing lively, expressive animation. Something can obviously look too wacky and zany for a more down-to-earth sitcom-like show like this, but if you remove ALL instances of 'off model' you end up with a visually soulless, Family Guy-looking show. Really, I can name tons of 90s Simpsons episodes where the characters are far livelier and more believable in their expressions and body language than they are in the Simpsons movie. You can strike a balance between super-wacky Looney Tunes-type stuff and boring robotic movement and that's where they failed in the long run.

This is one of those cases where you don't really benefit from following the 'vision of the creators'

Edit: http://i.imgur.com/MFz3g.jpg it's hard to make a composition look more boring than this

anyone got the scenes where theyre calling the hotlines and they put them on hold with the appropriate music, like Homer hearing "baby come back" when he called that missing child crisis line

I saw an episode from Season 10 last night - the one where Homer sets up a grease business.

It was still funny, it had elements of being a bit whacky but it blended well with the more grounded parts. Nice bits of subtle humour too.

I really don't like the animation in the new episodes though. It feels way too sterile and 'fast', lots of weird movements seem to happen.

Think it's time I watch some of the Season 11/12+ episodes to see how they've aged.

This along with someone stomping out of a room followed by a screeching car driving away were among the best gags.

Wait what? They still make Simpsons? I'm sure years ago they said they would stop with the Simpson movie.
Season 24 kicks off on Sunday, September 30th following the Saints/Packers game.

Not sure if it will premiere or not but the next episode in the rotation features Steve Carell voicing the role of Dan Gillick, an accountant for Fat Tony "who may go from crunching numbers to crunching skulls when he’s put in charge of the mob by Fat Tony while the big boss serves jury duty."

Simpsons World: The Ultimate Episode Guide: Seasons 1-20 (Hardcover)

Barnes & Noble lists it at $14.99 and $12.74 with coupon code T4T8J4A. Found the deal on Slickdeals but I'm not sure if it's a price error or just clearing them out. 1,200 pages covering every episode during the first 20 seasons. Amazon has a list price of $60 which had already been reduced from the MSRP of $150.
Went and bought this. It's still at $15 so it's an awesome deal. Thanks for posting!

Question about that guide: Are the early seasons just reprinted from the original books or is every episode entry remade in two-pages?

Seems to be different but I shipped mine to my sister in the states (I'm in Canada) so I can't say for sure.

figure i'd post this here.

Our ice hockey team are called the Flying Hellfish. Team colors are from the Philadelphia Flyers. The template design is from the old San Jose Sharks. My #96 is a nod to Pavel Bure (96 looks better than 10 :P )

Matt Groening had little to do with the success of the series.
His Tracey Ullman Show shorts were nothing like with what the different writers came up with that propelled the Simpsons to iconic status.

Matt was always the business man of the show, he made the deals with the toy and t shirt companies, and really was the face of the show in the public eye. He was selling the show as a product to us. The creative side was Sam Simon(he selected all of the original writers himself), and to a lesser extent Jim Brookes. Both of them were vets in Hollywood, while Matt was a newcomer, thus they knew what they were doing even early on. Many of the elements we came to know and love, including characters and running jokes, were the direct result of Simon.

This guy?

I heard he was just in it to pay off his gambling debts.

Is Simon even IN the show anymore? He's listed as an Executive Producer, but he never shows up for, well, anything. He's never been on the DVDs AFAIK.

According to Wikipedia:

"Simon's relationship with Groening was strained and he left the show in 1993, negotiating a pay-off which sees him receive tens of millions of dollars from the show's revenue each year."

Reading the rest of the bio, it sounds like he hardly had anything to do with The Simpsons. He wrote sporadic episodes through season 4, and he picked the original cast of writers.

Now he plays poker and is a boxing manager.

Edit: The further I get down the page the more I hate the guy.

Just wanted to say that my wife picked this up for me today. ( just because, love those) and it is surprisingly awesome. The humor is very much in the vain of seasons 1-8. Gonna pick up a few more, hopefully they are just as good.

I was Watching clips of the the snes Simpsons games made during the Simpsons golden age. I rented both Bart's Nightmare and Virtual Bart back in the day and they were both impossible. I sat through the speed runs of both games, and even that just seemed pretty unfun. I think I thought the graphics were good, but that's because the NES Simpsons games were so bad.

It's so odd because capcom did great stuff with licensed material. I guess Acclaim just didn't have it in them.

Yeah I had the Space Mutants one for NES. Never got past the mall level.

And I'll just put the AVGN review of those games here, even if you've all seen it already. (I never got past the first stage :( )

Yeah, I remember renting most of the old Simpsons games back in the day (specifically the SNES ones you mentioned) but not getting anywhere in them because of how brutally hard/broken they were.

At least The Simspons Arcade Game delivered on the license, I can only imagine how much money I dumped into that machine.

The comics never get mentioned & they must have made hundreds of them.
I have a few of them from years back, can't remember much other than they were alright reads.

Any Simpsons comic fans out there, were they good enough to seek out as a companion piece to the seasons 1-9 of the cartoon or are they just junk?

A lot of people say 10 but it's still funny up until about 14. That's when it becomes unbearable to watch

I fully agree with this. Season 9 or 10 is the cutoff for the entire season being great, but 11-14 have their moments. One of my favorite episodes (the tomacco episode) is in season 11.
