Interesting take. I liked it, though I do hope we see some more traditional trailers.

Thread title makes it seem like this is just about the announcement of trailer, when the trailer is actually included.

Anyways, that was kinda cool and unique marketing, I think.
 
Good point - would a mod be so kind as to change the title to reflect the fact that this does include said trailer (albiet shot offscreen).
 
I'm hyped. It'll be awesome to see that on a big screen later this month. And I believe that the last time I heard Billy West in a theater was with Space Jam, so that's even more awesome.

That Halo 3 marketing was so spot on and grand. I wonder if Halo 4 will top it now that Master Chief is back. Despite its marketing budget being larger, I felt like Reach's marketing just didn't generate a Halo 3 level of excitement.

Yeah. This is... not what I expected.

"Halo 4: The game... Which is kind of like a movie, but not. Either way, we're spending a lot of money on this, so fucking buy it in November"

So, mainstream audiences still aren't clear on what games are? Or just aren't aware that they can be made with huge budgets and production values?

One way this could have been communicated without all the voice-over would be to show off that campaign and Forward Unto Dawn footage.
 
This does nothing for me.

I'm sure anyone likely to buy the game is already aware that games can be more complicated than Pong. Feels like those people could be better targeted with a more traditional trailer.

Its honestly just me being curious here, but I honestly don't get the reasoning or goal in this. Using a shooter doesn't seem like the wisest of choices for this kind of ad.

Just trying to spread the brand wider. Nothing else. There will be epic commericals aimed at us, dumping on us, until the game launches. This isn't one of them.

This is like a segment on How It's Made. It's basically an infomercial telling you how MAN VIDEOGAMES ARE MADE LIKE MOVIES NOW PAY ATTENTION but without containing anything that someone who doesn't about videogames or isn't already on board for Halo 4 would give a shit about. Very very little game footage, no flashiness, just a guy talking in a monotone/educational voice.

I'm completely baffled and have no fucking idea who this would entice or be targeted at. "Mainstream" makes no sense as there's nothing here to entice and it doesn't seem like there's even any sort of target audience. This is almost exactly what I would expect the opening segment of a "Behind the Scenes of Halo 4" to be or something. It's not even an ad. I genuinely want someone to explain how this appeals to any demographic, mainstream or not, in terms of promoting this game. I seriously have no idea what they're trying to do here with this.

Ok I guess. I just think there are much better ways than this to accomplish that objective. I'm with Sailor Daravon on this. It doesn't make much sense.

I wonder what movies this will run with.

I honestly have no idea what demographic this is possibly supposed to be aimed at. People who are somehow completely unaware of games as a thing that exist, maybe? There's nothing in there except some shots of guys working and a voice over saying that's Halo 4 is going to be just like a movie, only not like a movie at all. Hell, the video I posted was shown during the Super Bowl, that's a pretty mainstream audience.
 
Interesting! This is going to be shown in cinemas so the comparisons to movies make sense in that context. No doubt we'll get the usual style ads too, I get the feeling Halo 4 marketing is going to be everywhere as we get closer to launch (still 4 months away!).

Oh wow. But that makes more sense than putting it in front of the Dark Knight.

So this is for moviegoers that don't know much about modern games and aren't thrown off by the idea of guns and combat with scary aliens. To sort of seed the whole idea of Halo and 343 into their subconscious?

Or maybe the want to spark a conversation about videogame shooters on people's first date?

Well, good luck with that Microsoft.

They're not going to run that along with trailers. It's going to be one of those videos before the trailers even start. Like Regal's First Look stuff.

EDIT: I should clarify that I don't know this. Just guessing.
 
Its clearly evident that even when plans for a Halo movie fell throughg, MS really REALLY wants a studio to change there mind and invest in making a movie out of the franchise.

Trailer to sell the game, the numerous live action commercials and such.
I'd assume are nothing more than to try and interest someone in giving the game a film treatment.

That makes a lot more sense, at least in terms of how they plan to show it. And it does come across as the kind of thing you'd see sandwiched between cable movies when they have a tiny slot of time to fill.

This is what I was thinking the whole time. That budget has gotta be the main deterrent though.

Edit: But damn, the graphics look like an incredible step up from Halo 3.

Hopefully if they get in talks again, they can work on getting the budget more reasonable.
Since that's what killed it getting off the ground last time.

EDIT:
However if Universal can spend 250 Million on Battleship, and yet can't seem to grasp giving Halo the same sort of funding I don't know what hollywood is thinking.
Seems they are stuck in a retro and based off toys rut at the moment.

Well the past few years have been nothing but remakes and "adaptations" of other media (Battleship) so it's really puzzling to see Halo struggling still since it's under the latter of the two yet has a huge install base and following even with celebrities. It's not a huge risk like other properties these studios have done and could have its own following outside of just gamers if it's good enough. Sci-fi is huge right now, Halo is still huge, and studios are fresh out of ideas so why not? You'd think budget concerns could be negotiated but maybe Microsoft is also afraid of selling out for too cheap out of fear that it could suck and turn people AWAY from the games just writing them off.

I don't know what's going on since it's no bigger risk than other movies out there and it isn't a remake at least. It would be CG intensive, but that's common for every single movie out there these days if it has any big action scenes so Battleship is somehow worth it with its huge budget yet Halo isn't? Of course, there's a lot of factors involved and shit we don't know, but it can't be any worse than the shit out there right now in terms of movies.

Christopher Nolan told me in a private chat last night that he is going to do it. Of course, it was a dream but he still told me so.
