And even as sexed-up and skintight as Michelle Pfeiffer’s charms were in “Batman Returns,” Nolan’s Catwoman is the best cinematic rendering of the character to date, allowing Anne Hathaway sex appeal, humor and real humanity in equal measures, not to mention motivation that places her on equal footing with her male counterparts without making her a fetish object who’s ultimately subject to them.

As much as I want to read all the reviews, I think I need to bail out on this thread and review sites in general until Friday. It'll be a struggle to stay spoiler-free but I'll see you all on the other side.

Stirring in its broad strokes but shakier in its handling of the nuances of character and story, The Dark Knight Rises doesn’t lack for ambition or vision. Nonetheless, this final instalment in director Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy is the first of the series not to smoothly execute its grand aspirations. The film suffers a bit from a glut of new characters — none of whom are as indelible as Heath Ledger’s Joker from The Dark Knight — but is helped along by Nolan’s continued insistence on emotional resonance over mindless spectacle. If there’s a slight sense of disappointment that this sequel can’t match the heights of the first two films, there’s no shame in a major studio tentpole daring to let its reach exceed its grasp.

hmmmmmm

IT'S NOT WHO I AM UNDERNEATH, BUT WHAT I DO THAT DEFINES ME.

lol that scene just played on tv and I caught it again, love how he throws that line back in Rachel's face to make her feel like shit.

I think he said it to drop a hint rather than to make her feel like shit!

I'm glad that Bale is getting his due in a lot of these reviews. I know some thought he faded to the background in TDK, but it looks like everyone's agreeing he's the emotional core of the movie.

Reviews should mention Joker in every single review of a comic book film they do. Make sure they put down the villain in each film because they're not as good as Ledger's Joker.

I think it's to drop a hint AND to make her feel like shit. Fuck yeah, girl, I'm Batman, and I like to swim in hotel lobbies. DEAL WITH IT_sunglasses.gif

My DARK KNIGHT RISES review isn't finished. Tomorrow maybe. The movie is pretty silly, entertaining, thematically hollow. Bond-esque.

Devin Faraci @devincf
Very interested in discussing the ending when the movie is released. AVENGERS remains best superhero movie of the year.

That's good to hear, since I always disagree with him.

Agreed, it's pretty dumb some of these reviewers try to take away from this film by saying there's no Joker. Well shit, Ledger won a fucking Oscar and it was unquestionably the best performance ever for a comic book film, obviously that doesn't just spring up every time and it's helped along by how powerful the Joker is as a character.

I just need to know if Nolan has topped Fantastic Four yet in Devin's eyes.

thematically hollow?

Is he for real?

lol sadly he is.

If there's one thing I know about Devin, he hates Batman as a character, and he thinks Batman's villians are more interesting than Batman. Devin disliked Batman begins but gave a good review to TDK for this very reason.

And since Batman plays the core of the story, (Joker was a bigger part of story in TDK) I expect him to trash TDKR.

God damn I wish he would drop into a hole and never rise from it.

I don't understand the hype for Avengers, I mean, I liked the movie, and will buy the Blu-Ray, but Iron-Man is still better for me.

I would say The Avengers is a pretty shallow movie.

The movie's plot only had one point or purpose: To assemble superheroes together.

What holds the movie together is the comedy and chemistry between the great actors.

I'd never heard of Devin, so I went googling. Didn't make it past the search results. "Badass Digest"? You fucking serious?

Criticizes film for being thematically hollow, then praises Avengers.

Yeah. I'd love someone to explain what the Avengers was about, thematically.

And, no, the power of friendship (tm) is not a theme, at least not when a majority of the characters barely tolerate each other.

From the Avengers review:

In some ways The Dark Knight represents the last hurrah of the Bush administration, the last moment when you could make a movie about a hero who used extra-Constitutional methods to keep people safe. Just as Death Wish fully captured the moment when our nation’s cities became terrifying to white people, The Dark Knight captures the last moment when Guantanamo Bay was a good thing.
