Im surprised we havent seen any extended Bane narrative yet (besides the prologue which was not for general consumption). We've seen catwoman, jgl, bale, alfred, gorrdon but only snippets in trailers for Bane. Id love to see just a small sample of a scene from him.

A great villain by me is the simple metric of "is he the hero in his own story?". A lot of villains are set up as straw men to be knocked down, not people who are too finding their own purpose in life, just on the wrong side of the moral divide. A villain like Th Lizard probably hated himself for all the dumb shit he did coked up on Lizard juice.

Very well said.

The world would be a better place without reviews.

They fuck people up, they can't find their own opinion because of it.

So did you buy the new Killzone?

Nah man, it got a 7/10

I agree. I read reviews to get general impressions, to see what people like or don't like about something, but if it's something I'm interested in, I'm not about to let the opinions of others actually prevent me from experiencing the content for myself.

I did find myself concerned while watching TASM that
The Lizard seemed to go from perfectly sympathetic to suddenly evil right after he turned into the Lizard, even when in human form. But it thankfully made clear that was all the Lizard, not Dr. Connors, by having him not only survive the movie and return to the guy was originally after it was all cleared out of him, and obviously feel like a piece of shit for the stuff he'd done as the Lizard and turn himself into the police of his own initiative. Just a more believable treatment of a villain's end for a superhero film

I consider this to be a problem with the villains in a lot of the really comic book-ish comic book movies. The villains just don't feel real or believable. Their motivations never make sense, and they are often just cartoonishly evil. This is present in every single Spiderman movie because they can't break away from the mad scientist archetype for the bad guy. They go from normal, good-natured scientist to evil motherfucker in a single event that heavily contrasts (in a bad way) the realism that they are trying to inject into their worlds. The only one who doesn't really fit this archetype for me is the Sandman in SM3, who doesn't go completely insane after his little science accident.

It's a classic tale of madness and redemption most cases, but it always feels rushed, especially in the origin story films like TASM where they have to squeeze in both the hero's origin story AND a primary villain/conflict for the movie.

GAF's review:

"Batman Begins was better."

no, that's not how gaf works

first 2 weeks: wow best in the trilogy, amazing.

2 months after release: well, not as good as bb but better than tdk

a year after release: worst in the trilogy, bb and tdk are so much better.

Dont worry, everyone will watch this movie.

Then we can tell you how much bloat, stupid villains and bad voiceovers it had.

That's not really the majority opinion in any case though. GAF lays it down up front, and the most passionate and usually negative ones are the loudest ones still trying to argue with every one months later. Happens with everything.

Steven Sodernbergh had a rant about that awhile back.

"We now live in a world where if a movie doesn't get universal acclaim, it's damaged goods or a failure, not worth your time. That's unfortunate. I don't get the sense anymore that a movie can be polarizing and that could be a GOOD thing. It's literally become...if your movie gets below a certain % on RT, then your movie is just no good. You can imagine what 2001: A Space Odyssey would have gotten on RT, but that's what's going on now."

Yeah. I usually do that Simpson's "walk into bar, walk out of bar" gif when I find myself idiotically clicking on any Lost or Spider-man thread.

I bet he'll be the first to call "skyfall is the the greatest piece of cinema from the 21st century".

That fucking traitor, that.
Veidt knows where his allegiances lay. He may be sworn to honor the Queen and her legacy, but his heart truly beats for Nolan.
