I'm tired of reviewers discussing Nolan's Batman as dark and brooding, as if that's novel.
The character is dark. He is moody. He's supposed to be humorless.

I rewatched begins last night as well. The scene where Bruce refuses the league of shadows gets no love. I even forgot about it and it's easily one of the better action scenes in the movie. I personally didn't like the dock fight though. I understood why it was edited like that but my eyes were all:
"What!... HUH!... WHUH!... GAH... JESUS...!!!"

I can't help but think about all the people Bruce inadvertently killed during his fight with fake R'as every time I watch that scene.

Batman has spent just as much time, if not more, being a pretty cheery character. Outside of a few stories he's usually surrounded by friends in a brightly colored world.

As hyped as I am about this movie, I hope this is the last Batman that is this overly serious and dramatic. I obviously don't want to revert back to Schumacher standards, but it would be nice to have a more comic-book styled Batman that isn't completely realistic.
Agreed. If they reboot the franchise I would love it to be along the lines of the Adam West Batman but even more aware of itself. I just don't see a reason to be serious anymore.

I don't know. I feel like these Nolan films are very specific in tone. So the next reboot should either be this or not this. Anything close to it would be strange to me. It would feel like a sad attempt. In theory of course. Not to say someone else couldn't come in and direct the shit out of a Batman movie but if it's all serious again we'd just compare in to Nolans films which would ultimately hurt it.

Interesting that they tacked on that last bit since the average score for TDKR is currently at a franchise best for both general and top critics.
I guess they figure it'll go down.

The camp was due in large part concerns the character had become too dark. Once they exited out of an era of silliness, the character returned to his darker roots.
Batman has always had colorful villains, but he himself is not that much fun. And why should he be? The character's origin comes from witnessing murder of his parents.
Some of the best Batman stories, like "Year One," "The Long Halloween," "The Killing Joke" and "The Dark Knight Returns" are very dark.
Altogether, it's a really dumb argument.
