Reflecting on it a bit more, TDKR's final 5 minutes are beyond brilliant and the sense of closure is terrific and admirable, but this movie's middle hour is sort of a jumbled slog.

The best part of the film is that it's Bruce's journey, and he has an arc. The emotional resonance missing from TDK is back, and it's fulfilling - in fact it plugs the hole that TDK's superior villains left.

How do you rate a film that's 2/3 amazing and 1/3 pretty average? I'd say "very good" overall.

Oh, and the haters better start eating crow - Hathaway and Selina Kyle are brilliant.

Whoa, that's incredible. Huge waste of money, but incredible!

Do you think you'll like it more with a second viewing, as there are things you may have missed or not understood completely?

Why does Johnathon have an American accent and Christopher british? edit - Nevermind wiki says they were raised in separate places. That's weird for brothers how did they get back in contact.

I may like the 2nd act better on 2nd viewing, but it won't have anything to do with comprehension. It all makes sense, but the events feel a bit dopey, like the corniest parts of Batman Begins.

I can probably say though that TDKR has the best cinematic / TV "Catwoman" ever, and her interactions with Batman are so awesome.

Why do we have British people playing our American heroes? Spider Man is British. Batman is British. Wolverine is Australian. I honestly didn't know Andrew Garfield was British until I saw him on Jon Stewart last week. Weeks after I saw ASM :o

You forgot arguably the most important American Superhero...Superman.

Played by Henry Cavill lol

Well, I loved Batman Begins, so I'm looking forward to it. Do you consider Rises to be a thematically and generally different piece of the trilogy, like Batman Begins and The Dark Knight where people will love each personally for different reasons. I don't know how else to word this, but I hope you understand.

And Henry Cavill. I don't know to be honest I think it's because our stars are really huge *stars* like having George Clooney as Batman would be really weird. Oh wait... etc. But guys like Garfield aren't as known relative to American stars so he has more leeway to become a character rather than some image people are used to. Those are problems with Will Smith and Tom Cruise too.

British people in hollywood superhero films:

Henry Cavill = Superman
Andrew Garfield = Spiderman
Christian Bale = Batman
Michael Caine = Alfred
Gary Oldman = Commissioner Gordon
Tom Hardy = Bane

Aaaand Irish:

Liam Neeson
Cillian Murphy

basically, using Batman Begins as an example, the only members of the principal cast that weren't from the UK/IRE are Katie Holmes and Morgan Freeman. Chris Nolan is obviously joint UK/USA nationality. Chris Corbould is English.

etc etc

Jonathan had to find a rare blue flower and climb a mountain. He found what he was looking for there.

I think TDKR feels like the thematic blending of Begins and TDK. It's probably a happy medium between superhero journey and novelistic crime film.

Going to a big marathon my theater is doing tomorrow. They're showing all three of Nolan's movies leading up to the Dark Knight Rises, I'm so hyped! Seeing the trilogy back to back is going to be awesome!
