The Dark Knight Rises |OT| The Legend Ends (Warning: Unmarked Spoilers Within)

So I just got back. These impressions will be completely spoiler-free, so fear not. Here's my immediate reaction.
My IMAX was fucking awesome in how they handled this midnight showing. They gave everybody who came a goodies bag with a bat-mask, an energy drink and posters and shit. So I had a completely fucking psyched crowd. I was totally happy again once the film began and was ready for some mafuckin' Batman!
The movie is good, not great. I felt it was several notches below both TDK and BB. Ultimately, the script is what lets the whole movie down. A lot of the character interactions feel very forced. There is a huge going through the motions vibe running throughout the film.
The first half of the film feels very lazy and then it picks up quite a bit. Ultimately, the set up to a lot of the big character moments don't do their job and thus those moments fall very flat.
Also, the exposition in this film rivals Inception at some points. There is also way, way too much fan service. Sometimes it feels like a FunnyorDie Batman parody.
Bane has a fucking amazing presence in one scene in the movie. Seriously chills. Unfortunately, the rest of the time he felt pretty derivative to me. His Connery voice is off-putting at first and there were more than a few times when I had no idea what he was saying.
Catwoman was fun, but she is absolutely shoe-horned into this movie. They did a good job shoe-horning her in, mind you - but ultimately there is absolutely no reason for her to be here other than fan service. Just more time stolen away from Bruce.
This film was so desperately trying to be Bruce's film, but Bruce is drowning in extraneous characters that steal much needed screen time from him.
Zimmer's 'Rise' track was the only standout in the entire film for me (I will of course re-listen to the whole soundtrack now). Catwoman's theme was kind of interesting, but ultimately pointless. The whole film seems like one big derivative bombastic mashup. Nothing really sticks in my memory outside of the 'Rise' track.
Caine and Oldman give it their best. Caine is as good as he's ever been, though he's fighting against a very poorly written script. There is so much stilted and forced dialogue that you wish they had done another couple of drafts.
Contrivances and conveniences all throughout the film.
There are some really great scenes sprinkled about this movie. There is ruby the size of a tangerine sparkling under all the dirt when you consider the arcs they set up. The execution is poor, though.
I won't say anything of the ending in this thread.

This greatly interests me. Can you expand on that without going into spoiler territory? Does that ruby relate to themes being explored and character interactions, or is just another way of saying that they did a good job at trying to fit a bunch of stuff in in 3 hours?

This is a good thing. A Batman film with a better second half?! Refreshing.
edit: watched Begins yesterday, checking out TDK today. Begins is better than I remembered. The first 45 minutes or so in particular flows pretty damn well. Still I feel a slight dropoff when he finally becomes Batman.
From what I remember TDK just felt better made, more thrilling to me. We'll see tonight.
Well about to leave for the cinema. I feel like absolute shit from lack of sleep and am now super pissed off and that fucking little country singer that felt he had to ruin the movie for people right as its come out.
Not a great frame of mind to go into seeing this.

If, tomorrow, I tell the press that, like, The Amazing Spider-Man will do poorly, or that Michael Bay is making another Transformers flick, nobody panics, because it's all "part of the plan". But when I say that one little NeoGAF member doesn't like the film, well then everyone loses their minds!

Basically if you were told the premise for where each character is at the start of this movie, you would assume a great movie was about to follow. The execution feels very sloppy and half-hearted.
