So, it's 4 in the morning and I just got home from a near-packed session. It was good. Nothing more; nothing less. I'd strongly advise that expectations be kept in check.

EDIT: Scullibundo has it. "Stilted" is an incredibly apt word here.

Hmmm? You know... You know what I've noticed? Nobody panics when things go "according to plan." Even if the plan is horrifying! If, tomorrow, I tell the press that, like, The Amazing Spider-Man will do poorly, or that Michael Bay is making another Transformers flick, nobody panics, because it's all "part of the plan". But when I say that one little NeoGAF member doesn't like the film, well then everyone loses their minds!

Bravo

I think on par with TDK for me. But I've seen the first two near to 10 times each so we'll see I guess.

Did you do spoiler free impressions? I tend to agree with both you & Sculli's opinions on movies so it would be interesting to see were you and him differed.

Sunhi quit this thread, no? And Lionel is on vacation ..

Which is why I'm looking forward to rich for my BatGaf gif fixes.

edit: Sunhi's here, scratch that.

i'm new at this, and I haven't used AE for four years :( Still on CS3. lmfao.

getting there!

So good and so true.

according to wikipedia:
David S. Goyer
Christopher Nolan

inception was written by chris nolan and thought most of the characers in that was poor, so going by what sculi has said this doesnt seem surprising.
When will you go back to being your weird self? It's odd seeing you trying to make a serious post.

Am I the only one who enjoyed the exposition in Inception?

The spiral staircase scene made me cringe so bad when Gordon Levitt says 'paradox' or whatever. Like ugh yea we get it. Nolan's one liner's are so hit or miss, and when they miss they're really bad. I know that's not really exposition but it's an unnecessary reminder of something they said earlier.

I had no problem with it. I'm not sure what people wanted instead.

More character development and genuine growth so you can get to know them and care for them, instead they wasted a lot of time telling people rules on how things are supposed to happen and not letting audiences connect things on their own. It's just dumbed down to pseudo-intelligent levels so the masses can think they were part of a challenging but rewarding 'deep' experience. I liked the movie but that kinda stuff brought it down a lot.

I'll just say that the No More Dead Cops extra and flying hat officer are the tip of the iceberg.

So Sculli, would you say this is closer to a Return of the Jedi than a Spider-Man 3? Or a few notches above something like Return of the Jedi?

Anyone seeing this alone?

If I wanted to see it day one, I had to get tickets for Friday at 5:05. Alone. :(

But I will do it anyways just to see it. :)

If you were to choose about the best aspect and worst aspect about the film, what would they be?

Im talking from narrative/structure/character point of view rather than technical.

It would be forced character motivations that feel completely unnatural and are there to clumsily insert drama.

Absolute rave by the L.A. Times

I don't think there are many major spoilers, but beware as always.

Here is the opening paragraph though:

Potent, persuasive and hypnotic, "The Dark Knight Rises"has us at its mercy. A disturbing experience we live through as much as a film we watch, this dazzling conclusion to director Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy is more than an exceptional superhero movie, it is masterful filmmaking by any standard. So much so that, its considerable 2-hour, 44-minute length notwithstanding, as soon as it's over, all you want to do is see it all over again.

It almost seems like if the exposition in the first half draws you in and immerses you, you'll fall in love with the drama in the second half, but if you feel that the characterization is weak, the second half's drama feels clumsy.

So Sculli, would you say this is closer to a Return of the Jedi than a Spider-Man 3? Or a few notches above something like Return of the Jedi?

I'd actually say that it's a lot like the FIRST HALF of Spider-Man 3 before he gets the venom suit and all the crazy shit starts happening.

It feels like a greatest hits version of the beats of the previous two films and has characters acting somewhat out of character to push their arcs forward.

The plot of the movie isn't bad at all. It's good. But the characters suffer big time imo.

Don't talk like one of those seemingly reasonable NeoGAF critics, you're not! Even if you'd like to be. To them, you're just another asshole, like Reed. They need you right now, to confirm their hype. But when you don’t, they'll cast you out, like a leper. See, their morals, their code... it's a bad joke. Dropped at the first sign of trouble. They're only as good as the reviews allow them to be. I'll show you, when the chips are down, these... these civilized member? They'll eat each other. See, I'm not a monster, I'm just ahead of the curve.

Good enough I suppose. I probably shouldn't ask too many questions anyway.

Funny, I didn't really start having all these high expectations until the twitter hype started after the first few screenings. I just want a worthwhile conclusion.

Trust me when I say that you should just take a deep breath and go into the film expecting to enjoy yourself. If you go in expecting a life changing cinematic experience you will obviously be let down.

There is no reason to drive yourself into a tizzy. I love these movies as much as the next guy but Im not banking my happiness on the film.

Woah. The New York Observer gave it a score of 1 out of 4.

Accompanying quote:

Speaking lines they cannot possibly understand, not one actor makes any attempt to be believable. So manufactured and synthetic that they eventually lose all sense of reality, they're like reconstituted orange juice and processed cheese.

Sounds like had the same problems Sculli did.
