Oh, I can't agree with that.

The degree of technical quality in cinematography, editing, audio, effects at the mean has improved DRAMATICALLY since the 80s. Again, that's at the mean.

If we want to talk about storytelling at the high end, that is a VERY different conversation.

What are we saying when we talk about technical quality? Because I think the special effects are more believable in Ridley Scott's Blade Runner than in Spielberg's latest Indiana Jones. Because I think the sound design on 2001 is more memorable and speaks louder than in any sci-fi flick that came out this year. Because I think the editing in Goodfellas is more expressive, more interesting than in any of Chris Nolan's movies. Because the cinematography in Days of Heaven, Tati's Playtime or Ozu's Tokyo Story is more accomplished and original than any Hollywood movie's cinematography that came out since the start of the year.

Technical quality is nothing if you use it wrong. Avatar's got more technical effects on screen than any other movie done by Hollywood, and yet it looks like a turd.

DISCLAIMER: THIS IS NOT A COMPARISON OF THE QUALITY OF EACH MOVIE.

So let's talk about, say, Trading Places. Love that movie - I think it still holds up to now. However, the editing and the audio (booming) is dreadful compared to even a shitty comedy in the last five years.

Most average movies aren't worth watching, to me. But if we talk about sole entertainment values, I think, for instance, that Lethal Weapon is better than any cop comedy that's been done in the past 10 years. Same for BTTF for sci-fi comedies, or for Star Wars and epics. The big budget blockbusters are getting more and more boring to me.

Ghostbusters, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Gremlins, The Karate Kid, Once Upon a Time in America, Purple Rain, The Last Starfighter, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, Top Secret!, Conan the Destroyer

I mean WOW, THOSE are blockbusters. There's a great variety in there, too. Nowadays it feels as if every big movie is a freaking superhero flick... :(

I get what you're talking about, but why should I care? Plains, Trains and Automobiles is still way better than any comedy that came out this year, technical problems and all. The writing and directing has gone way down.

All I've been able to figure is, if you've looked past any sort of plot issues in previous Batman films (joker's impossible planning skills, etc), accepted or are indifferent to Heath being the best ever, and come in ready to be engaged rather than expecting a third film wank, you're going to love the shit out of this. If do come in with those pretenses, you'll probably just like it and on some level agree that Catwoman was great, JGL was surprisingly good, and Bane had swag.

Haven't I been saying all along that Nolan makes a terrible Super Hero film? Its a good movie, but a terrible Super Hero movie.

I haven't, no. I'll get to it when I have the time.

Critically, it seems to be TDK > TDKR > BB, so the third movie curse thing is just opinion and shouldn't be regarded as general consensus.
