did anyone else have a moment in the middle of the movie, when things are well and truly fucked up, where it was like "a man in a bat costume is going to have really, really hard time fixing this"

Don't be afraid, Bruce. You are just an ordinary man in a cape. That's why you can't fight injustice and that's why you can't stop this revolution!

Can't believe I didn't remember that. Sigh.

Would have been nice to see a gadget i suppose but I loved Bats beating Bane to fuck with his hands.

defending a stupid line with a stupid line isn't that solid an idea :p

I liked both lines, actually. I'm ok tiny bits of weird humour creeping into something so otherwise self-serious.

Haha, I'm not actually defending the dumb line - lord knows it was dopey. My point is that if you're going to call out TDKR on its comic book cheesey one-liners, you need to cast the same critical eye on the previous films, especially Begins, which has by far the lousiest script in the series.

For me, the biggest plot-related WTF in TDKR is Bruce's amazing travel from India to Gotham in what felt like twenty minutes. How, how, howwww?

I would have liked if the cowl came off at the end and we still saw the Batman in Bruce's eyes. It would look as if Bruce was dressed in his League of Shadows garb and we could remember that underneath it all he's a trained ninja and not a brawler.

The 'Nice Coat' line was to somebody and wasn't self-depreciating, self-conscious humor.

Ooh that would have been nice, if everyone knew it was Bruce like the end of TDKReturns when he fakes his death, if he gets his cowl off and smashes the wank out of Bane.

I wouldn't want it to be so people saw that it was Bruce. I would want something like that so we could see that Batman has consumed Bruce, with or without the cowl. The costume is nothing. WILL is everything!

The will to act..

It wasn't self-deprecating, but it was a totally cheeseball one-liner which undermined Batman in the scene.

Another moment in Begins which makes me cringe is Batman's holding up the keys to the Tumbler and asking Gordon "do you drive stick?". For a moment I thought I was watching a Schumacher entry.

I wouldn't want it to be so people saw that it was Bruce. I would want something like that so we could see that Batman has consumed Bruce, with or without the cowl. The costume is nothing. WILL is everything!

That would actually have been kind of awesome.

Oh. Well that would be cool too. Even cooler in fact.

Yeah fuck me.

I guess so Bruce could watch his city die.

This is probably the thing that confused me the most. Did they seriously stage this whole elaborate plan so Bruce Wayne could watch Gotham go to shit on TV in a pit for 5 months? I'm not trying to be picky, but I really just don't understand the logic. I actually couldn't understand most of Bane's speech so i seriously had no idea what the fuck was going on.

Bane explained his whole purpose to Bruce before he left him in the prison. Something about giving false hope to people so they would fight over each other believing that there was still hope of survival instead of just killing all of them outright.

Well they were both finishing Ra's work and avenging him, so destroying Gotham slowly was the best way to go about it I suppose.

I heard everything Bane said. My little screening must have had great sound.

Yeah I saw it in an IMAX. The explosions were great but I really had trouble understanding Bane. I think I'm going to reserve my judgements until I see it again. I did enjoy it, and was absorbed for the whole thing, but some of the choices the director made just seemed odd and not enitrely believeable. As ridiculous TDK seems when pciked apart, I never questioned the choices made by the characters in that film. It's unfortunate TDKR wasn't the same.

uh. what.

Ah, something like that. He wasn't in the movie much. Although I accept that it's more of a Bruce Wayne development movie rather than a straight Batman type movie like TDK. Don't get me wrong, I loved the movie, and I actually like it better than the 2 as a movie. TDK did being a batman movie better though, if that makes sense.

more "WOT I LIKE":

Christian Bale and Michael Caine's expressions at the cafe at the end were fucking perfect. I loved the quick shots between them. Really nice stuff. Great way to instantly wrap up three movies worth of character.

That shot is probably my favourite. I adored it... as soon as Michael Caine walked into that cafe area I knew what would happen and I got chills.

-Batman/Bane fights were odd. Why would Batman straight up fist fight Bane? Where are the gadgets?

Batman has been retired for 8 years.

He is old and his body is fucked (even before the infamous back breaking).

He may just want to beat Bane the good ol fashioned way to delude himself into thinking that he is still a young man. (or perhaps its a death wish)

Him breaking down in front of the graves made me tear up, and then when he saw Bruce alive.....sooo goood

It works so well because of the earlier flash forward, where Alfred describes his dream. Because the imagery is familiar, we start thinking "oooh will he be there will he be there this time?" and get that anticipation that Nolan is so good at. Then bam, payoff.

I dunno. It's a romantic idea, but I just don't believe that of their relationship. I don't believe Bruce would just give Alfred a nod. Alfred deserves better than that.

These are guys who would banter back and forth after destroying all of the Batman stuff in the darkest of times. It's part of the reason I didn't at all buy the fact that Bruce would tell Alfred to piss off after the letter bullshit. Their relationship is so much stronger than petty bullshit like that.

All Alfred wanted was a nod, that's how I see it.

I think it's more that Bruce has emotionally regressed and that's why he acts like a child and kicks Alfred out. It's not the best thing ever, it would have been better if he'd hanged around, but it was fine for me.

I don't agree with this. If anything, the more romantic idea is that Bruce and Alfred are friends forever in that way. Bruce asking Alfred to leave, and Alfred knowing that that was going to happen, was a really human moment. Alfred knew he couldn't just be Bruce's safety net forever.

It wasn't that he sent Alfred away. It was the bullshit reason they used for his sending Alfred away.

Had Alfred seriously given Wayne an ultimatum that either he give up the Batman bullshit or Alfred would leave him because he couldn't help Bruce destroy himself anymore, it would have been fine. But then they brought in the letter burning bullshit and it was SO forced and SO bad.

I understand why he took him on the first time, but he got his ass beat. So he does some pushups in a hole and can now beat the shit out of him? I don't know, I feel as though he should've outsmarted him rather than punching him in the face.

Just came back iron an advance showing. What a great movie! Nolan is by far my favorite director ever.

On my mobile so will get into details later. On a side note the cops arrested someone recordingthe movie with their phone. They weren't messing around! There was like 3 theatre employees and 2 cops that came out of nowhere!

Off to see The Dark Knight for the 10th time in theatres!

It didn't feel forced, but it might be something that stands out when I see it again. I'm so used to seeing people fixate on things when it comes to loss of any kind that that sort of thing. Even if it played a tad theatrically, it didn't make me cringe. "You need to move one because she did" felt right to me.

I agree, it could have been something Chekhov's Gun-clever like the "ice problem" in Iron Man, where Batman figures out a way to exploit the same thing he was beaten by before to beat Bane.

I know what you're saying, but I didn't take it that Bruce intended never to see or engage with Alfred ever again. He went to that specific location because Alfred had told him about it earlier, and he must have intuited that Alfred would return someday.

I didn't see that as the final exchange between them.

I was actually really afraid that the movie would end on the shot of Alfred smiling, without the audience seeing what or who he was looking at... which would have been very bold, but quite torturous!

I love Nolan and I get it - you can't replace Heath - but did you have to finish the trilogy with Bane??? I liked Bane's voice and that's it

And I was pleasantly surprised to see Dagget

One of the more irritating points in the movie is the obvious existence of Talia Al Ghul, and the fact that the Talia persona is never properly developed or explored. She's basically like "Oh Hai Bats, I'm Talia and I'm mad about what you did to my daddy so I'm gonna go jump in a truck and die in a motor vehicle accident now".

Hrrrrm... they sacrificed a proper character study for a cheap reveal.

Man if that had happened I would've choked the guy sitting beside me in the theater.

Do you think they could continue in the same universe with JGL as Batman/Robin/Nightwing? I would rather see that then a reboot.....

I would rather see a reboot. JGL is not Batman. That whole ending scene with him made me roll my eyes. Nolan Shia Laboufed it and I thought he was above that pandering fan service wankery.

Nah, I liked it. There is more than one Batman - the comics have established that. The best character to ever hold the mantle is Bruce Wayne, obviously, but The Batman is a symbol and persona that is more than a man and can extend through time (Terry, etc).

Having said that, I don't wanna see a JGL-led bat-flick. The idea that the legacy and persona of Batman would probably endure in some way was enough for me. In no way was this a Shia Labeof "Indy 4 Moment" - how could you even make that comparison?

That's true. Indy picked the hat back up as if to say 'LOL JUST KIDDING GUYS!' Nolan wasn't kidding.

Didn't think there was anything wrong with it. Pushed Batman as a symbol for Gotham rather than for one man.

The statue did that. There are other ways of galvanizing Gotham's citizens than having somebody stumble into the Bat cave and rather than assuming the ideology of Batman, actually start using Bruce's gadgets and shit. I went from something metaphorical to something literal. That was the problem.

Ha ha, but the comparison isn't the same - there is literally only one Indiana Jones, but Batman has always been about more than Bruce Wayne.

Exactly right - which is precisely what Nolan established in Begins (you can become more than a man... a symbol, Mr Wayne, etc) and in The Dark Knight Rises ("Batman has always been more than one man" says Bruce at one point).

But they never showed JGL becoming Batman, putting on the suit, using gadgets, etc - they left it deliberately vague. Does it look like it could happen? Sure. It's just a "what if"... and it doesn't diminish Bruce Wayne at all. He might become "Robin" with his own costume and everything (heh) - who the frick knows?

I really, really, really liked Blake walking into the cave at the end. It felt like a really good take on the idea of Robin in this Batman universe. Total chills moment for me.

Thats what he did though. All it took was a fracture in his mask to set his chronic pain off and turn the tide of the fight in his favour...
