I'm joining the disappointment club. Maybe a second viewing will help. But the entire movie seemed more tedious to me than Batman Begins and I love Batman Begins. Didn't feel any threat from Bane or that Gotham City was in any trouble. Sure there was chaos, but I wasn't clinging to my scene and clamoring for the next scene. That fight choreography was atrocious as well. I guess they were going for realism, but it was really boring.

I'm only gonna do the top 2 tiers:

God Tier:

Batman Begins
Spider-Man 2
The Dark Knight Rises

Great Tier:

The Avengers
The Dark Knight
X2

Fuck the rest.

So I'm finally gonaa see this tonight. Can anyone answer this for me please?

1) Is it right, that this movie has less 'evening' or 'night' scenes than the Dark Knight? The trailers looks way lighter in that area. If you know what I mean...

2) Also, in one of the trailers I saw Bane standing above Bruce. Is the way he finds out his identity satisfying or not? Or is there not much time spent on this?

1) There's a lot less night scenes, but there's good reason for that.
The night in BB was to signify that Gotham was completely corrupt and crime ridden. There was less in TDK because steps were being made to irradicate the crime gangs. In TDKR the gangs are all but gone, so it's mostly daytime, Gotham is for all intents and purposes a much brighter place to be.

2)
Not much time is spent on it. But that scene is incredibly powerful for completely different reasons.

Solo and I were BB bros, but I fear we'll never be on the same page about TDKR.

God tier? TDKR is just a film lost in the mad scramble for fan gratification.

BB is legendary.

I've been wondering how I should see this. Since this actually has some portions that are filmed with an IMAX camera, should I watch it in an IMAX theatre or should I watch it in one of those UltraAVX theatres? Because the only real differences that I've noticed are UltraAVX theatres are louder and has more seats.

IMAX - a real IMAX.

I think in a couple of years TDKR is going to be looked back on as the best in the trilogy or at least equal to TDK.

I disagree with you about Bale's performance being as good as in the other films. It was most definitely better.
I'm not sure what would be considered spoilers, but Bale playing the more physically and mentally broken Bruce Wayne felt like a role that came naturally to him, moreso than Batman's beginnings or questioning of morals in BB and TDK

Yeah, sorry, my fault. I've stated before, but I agree. He put up his best performance in the whole series. He seemed more confident and natural than he had been in either BB or TDK.

TDKR is a bad joke. Defended at the first sign of trouble. I'll show you; when you do your trilogy rewatches soon, this 'god tier' movie will implode on itself. I'm not a monster, I'm just ahead of the curve.

Don't be afraid, Sculli. You are just a troll in a cape. That why you couldn't fight BatGAF and thats why you can't stop this thread!

I can get down with this. Iron Man's always been so overrated. The series is a really fun performance by RDJ and nothing else. The above were all of the best comic book theater experiences I've had. Probably in a similar order.

IMAX - a real IMAX.

I need this. Watched it in a Digital Imax, and was pretty disappointed with the image quality. I think Skyfall might have been more impressive than anything in TDKR in image quality. If I was only back home in Chicago, Navy Pier's Imax would have absolutely happened. As is, I'd have to make my way out to Universal City from 25 minutes north, through only public transportation. yikes. Instead I thought to give the local Digital Imax a chance, at it lost.

The Begins score is so much better than TDKR. Was so disappointed in that score.

Batman Begins plays like an opera. The music is pushing that film forward in just about every scene. Especially the first hour, I don't know if it stops playing. It's terrific.

For the record, Iron Man 1 would have come in my next tier, the good tier. But really its only those 6 films I listed that have really made a major impact for me.

Who said anything about stopping it?

*Brings up James Cameron and leaves*

Flawless

TDKR won't win any Oscars (maybe Pfister, but the competition is CRAZY TOUGH this year), but I bet it will get a good number of noms.

Trilogy Rewatch - Batman Begins

I watched Batman Begins on blu-ray earlier today, getting ready for The Dark Knight Rises tomorrow. This is really a movie which stands the test of the time and is as enjoyable or more so even on multiple viewings. The entire first act is really brilliant. It takes serious balls to do a Batman movie where half the movie has basically no Batman, but instead takes the time to develop the characters and the world, and create a really grounded sense of making everything relate-able and believable.

By the time Batman finally strikes in the docks warehouse scene, it doesn't feel like a superhero movie or a make believe. At that moment you can truly believe that a Batman could exist, and that the person they have developed up until then is capable of pulling that shit off, and everything makes sense.

And then some random guy walks in the Wayne Enterprises boardroom with bad news about a missing super weapon. At that exact moment, the movie transits from a serious drama about a larger than life hero straight into a comic book movie. Do not pass Go, do not collect 200 snob points. It's pretty interesting that such a transition is made so quickly and drastically.

Everything after that scene is just comic book land fanboy joy for better or for worse. Tons of hardcore Year One references. Tons of silly over the top gadgets and sequences. Huge leaps in logic in the name of excitement and fun. It's certainly not bad, and fans of the comics will have a lot of stuff to dig into, but the shift in tone is definitely a noticeable and deliberate choice.

Overall it was pretty great, and where it shines is in Nolan's amazing ability to get a really good cast for each and every role. I still have no idea what the fuck Batman's actual plan right at the end was, if Gordon was going to destroy the rails anyway. It makes the entire assault on the monorail by Batman feel completely pointless and done just for false dramatic effect for the audience. Also, microwave emitter LOLZ! But whatever, it was a good movie! :)

I liked BB a whole lot more on rewatch (after already being a pretty big fan), but the final act remains a real let down for me.

Who do you think will be in the field for cinematography? I can only think of Roger Deakins for James Bond and Wally for TDKR.

Yeah I feel like the first hour and a 20 minutes or something are amazing but indeed just like Duckroll posted it goes into straight comic book territory after a while.

I can't rate these movies.. lol
They are all damn good!

I reckon Cloud Atlas has a shot too, if they're doing interesting things with it.

I should probably also have mentioned Les Miserables. Wally really doesn't have a good chance at all. Although to avoid the 'second snub' controversy to Batman, maybe they'll pull the ol' 'Give em all the tech awards, except leave the prestige awards out of it.'

The most perfect trilogy in the world.

The Godfather.

I like how 'all consuming' the Bane and Joker characters are. In both parts you aren't at all reminded of the actual actors behind them, these characters are truly themselves/real.

I must be the only one that didn't really care for Batman Begins but really liked TDK. I haven't seen TDKR yet, I'm not sure if I'm going to like it...Nolan movies are hit or miss for me.

GOAT.

I enjoy the Nolan Batman movies but I wouldn't rate them as anymore than "good" movies. I actually loved the Dark Knight but felt that Ledger's performance single-handily elevated it to "amazing".

Prestige is amazing. The rest are just good, yeah. Nolan is really gifted at crafting experiences which feel very meaningful and monumental as you are watching them, but upon repeat viewings, many of them start to fall apart in terms of editing, consistency, logic, etc.

Don't know how many times I've rewatched the Dark Knight, but its so damn dense and well paced and on-point that I love it just as much if not more every time. Rises was a tremendous disappointment for me in comparison, but it seems like a lot of people enjoyed it, so don't let me scare anybody off.

BB still feels like a superhero movie. TDK felt like an action thriller with superhero stuff in it.

I think that's why I liked TDK a lot, it felt more like a crime saga with superheroes in it. I hope TDKR is more like that.

One thing about this series that drives me batty is that they try to make it gritty and realistic, but they are hampered by having to hit a PG-13 rating. No blood or wounds, they always cut away during violent scenes. It just kills the movies for me on repeat viewings, I wish they could be given free reign to go all out with an R rating.

I really want to watch TDKR again. I really really loved that movie, and seeing it in imax was simply amazing. It was the perfect caper to end this trilogy on and is one of the better trilogies ever.

Each time I rewatch TDK, more and more things in the movie start to piss me off. So many internal inconsistencies and poorly scripted stuff which don't hold up when putting it all together. Once you notice the problems, the editing is so bad it's impossible to not feel disappointed at how it falls apart on analysis.
