It was brilliant. Really massive, really enjoyable. Anne Hathway was surprisingly fantastic as Selina Kyle- biggest surprise of the film for me.

Trilogy Rewatch - The Dark Knight

I just realized that this title is inaccurate because it won't be a trilogy REwatch since I'm only seeing TDKR for the first time tomorrow. Oh well, semantics, lol.

So, TDK is actually still a pretty solid movie. Even ignoring that the editing is spotty, the "plans" in the entire movie are totally over-convenient and contrived, and how nothing really feels as "smart" as it did the first time, especially when you know everything before hand, the actual moment to moment scenes are pretty well shot and there's some powerful stuff.

But watching BB and TDK again so close together really shows how superior one movie is to the other in terms of overall composition, thought, and timelessness. BB feels like a product of a true desire to tell a good story, one which did not focus on tricks and twists, but rather a story of humanity and characters developing into something more. TDK is a high concept glitzy film meant to titillate and thrill, appealing to those with certain special interests with bold themes and concepts, but never really being a cohesive and honest stroke of storytelling.

Another comparison would be that BB is like a classic myth or fairy tale, where while the text itself may not be complex or flowery, the tale itself strikes a chord with readers. TDK is more like a philosophical poem, where the appeal is in the parts rather than the whole. Selected quotes and passages can hold a strong impact for some who are drawn to the style or the ideas, but when taken as a whole and judged as a narrative, it might be lacking.

Either way, it's interesting to me how Nolan made two Batman movies so stylistically, thematically, and narratively different. It is probably a feat in itself that he chose not to repeat himself in the process of making a sequel. I'm pretty excited now to see what he has to offer with his conclusion. Hopefully it is also something different from both movies before it, so even if it does not surpass the work before, it can stand alone as something unique in the saga.

I'm going to finally see it tonight but I do overall agree with your pov when it comes to comparing the two films.

What an awesome movie.

Absolutely exceeded my expectations and gave me same kind of thrills and chills as The Dark Knight managed to at the time. Kind of which I've forgotten upon dozens of re-watches. At its best it felt like real modern epic. Almost poetic. I kinda love the cultural impact these movies have around them.

The most positive surprise for me was Anne Hathaway's character. She stole almost every scene with her dedicated acting job and obvious beauty. Came out of nowhere since I didn't expect much from her. Bane managed to pull of one of the most threatening villains in a long memory. Especially in the first half of the movie.

Yes it might've felt bloated or disconnected at times but it doesn't do any mistakes that The Dark Knight didn't pull in some form. Although I have to admit I honestly hated couple of scenes and there were some weird audio or editing issues all over the place. Still I'd definitely put this above Batman Begins and among the best comic book films. Definitely best blockbuster I've seen this year. And I was really anxious for Prometheus.

**** 1/2 / *****

Just re-watched BB in prep for this.

This is my third re-watch. I thought it was good, first time through. Second time was the charm and I really loved it and now I still do on third watch.

The thing is, BB felt more comic-booky than I remembered. The parts where Gordon takes control of the tumbler felt very cheesy - but not in a bad way. The whole micowave emitter plot is still kinda shitty - and very rushed. But it doesnt come in the way and I just enjoyed the ride. Its remarkable how everyone understands the technical workings of the water supply/sewerage system. Katie Holmes goofy smirk is probably the only major distraction in the movie.

If TDKR is as comic booky as this, then I'm down for it. Nothing in comic book-dom touches the practically flawless first half of BB. I had a big goofy smile on my face when all the quotes GAFFers have been throwing around were said. GAF has definitely increased my appreciation of the film.

I have done what is necessary. On to TDK rewatch tommorow.

P.S. Is it me or Gary Oldman keep changing his accent in the film? In the early young gordon scene he has a faux irish-american accent going, then has a different accent going through the rest of the movie, and then speak in a very weird (through his nose) manner when talking about joker in the end?

First IMAX experience in a long time, at least for a full movie. Saw the preview on IMAX but this something else entirely. As long as there are directors using IMAX properly, I'll continue to see movies like that. Count me out on the digital, conversion, or 3D crap.

Let me say it plainly. If you can see TDKR in IMAX, you owe it to yourself to see it that way.

Oldman's accent slips all throughout the trilogy. There is a scene in TDK where he does about three different accents in two lines of dialogue (the scene with Gordon arguing with Dent on the rooftops).

MAHHKAD DOLLA BILLS.

how is that not a thing on bat-gaf?

I don't know if I'll get my head bitten off for asking about a non-spoiler spoiler, but I'll go ahead and ask: Can anyone tell me the scene, in spoiler tags, in which Senator Patrick Leahy makes his cameo? I don't want to miss him.

I hated BB when I first saw it. Thought it was boring and the voices seem to not fit the characters. TDK blew me away and now TDKR has manage to blow me away. Incredible movie.

I re-watched the first two movies before the TDKR and now that I am older I absolutely love BB though the Joker from the TDK was just an unforgettable character.

For me its obvious TDKR > TDK > BB and this was most likely due to budgets getting bigger with each film.

I really got a kick out of the cheesier stuff in BB on this rewatch.

Someone should gif that scene bats breaks into a cell and says "Excuse me".

I also found ras sophistry (calling his thugs "Gentlemen") less awkward this time around.

Oldman is a delight but I'm glad I'm not going crazy by thinking his accent sounds different across the films. His accent slips a lot when he has to yell, which I guess makes sense.

Rhas is a straight up pimp in BB. Even when he is trying to destroy Gotham and kill Bruce, you can't not like him. Oozing charisma.

I really can't believe I have to wait till Thursday/Friday to see this.

I am starting to go insane, and some minor spoilers are popping up on Facebook...

Oh I SHALL.

So is that thread a battleground at this point? I imagine there's lots of arguing given how mixed the responses here have been.

No, it's a typical movie-GAF thread. Mostly people who liked or loved the movie and a very vocal minority who hated it.

Feels weird/good not to be in the latter group for once :P

There are also plenty of people who like it, but want to pick nits or talk about plot issues, and are being shouted down by the fanboys.

So yeah, usual movie-GAF thread.

Shouted down or proved wrong? A bunch of people are criticising things that were explained in the movie.

This hasn't been the case except for when people are coming in just to nitpick. Any legit issues have been discussed.

As I noted a few pages back, I was gonna watch it a third time tonight. I did that and I still love it. Best of the trilogy for me. Now going cold turkey until the BR release.

Also, is it just me or - at the start of the film at least - does Bane's voice have a bit of a Connery twang to it? I can't have been the only one who noticed it (or maybe I'm crazy).

Others have pointed out that Bane sounds like Connery.

I look forward to joining the rest of the bat-gaf crew in the spoiler thread...a month from now. :(((

It will be a miracle if I get to see this movie completely unspoiled. Some idiots are already talking about "scenes" in other bat-related threads without tags.

Why is the wait so long? :o is it released that late in some territories? Us latin american folk have to wait until the 27th.

I've managed to stay safe from spoilers but there's still one week to go.

I dont want to sound like a broken record, but I live in a middle eastern country where the movie has been delayed a whole month due to ramadan. It comes out 16 August. :/

Saw this last night and have to say it was a great film on par with Batman Begins. The Dark Knight is probably the best so far, but only because of minor issues with Dark Knight Rises.

DKR was a little more predictable than the previous films thanks to more in your face foreshadowing and focused more on the character of Wayne than Batman itself, which I guess is understandable in the last episode of a trilogy. I sort of wonder which film had the most Batman screen time of the trilogy.

I do like the theme of 'Rising' present throughout the film from the beginning to the very last minute of the movie, but didn't really like the quick flashbacks to scenes we were already aware of thanks to the first two movies.

The movie still has problems with daytime to nighttime transitions being virtually instantaneous. Batman seems to pretty much conjure the setting of the sun at will, which is a little more jarring here than in The Dark Knight. I thought most of the police officer scenes were a bit boring.

Oddly enough I thought Michael Caine's acting was phoned in and was actually surprised at how good Selina Kyle was portrayed. I also liked Bane's voice after I got used to it, it has a sort of Frankensteinish appeal to it.

Just came back. I loved it and still consider Nolan to be a master at creating interesting mainstream blockbusters and especially with respect to the source material.

I acknowledge a lot of the criticism levelled at the film, but as it already has been mentioned, this has a 'sum of its parts' type of quality that is thematically coherent and consistent with the two predecessors. It is the correct and well-fitting end to an ambitious and inspirational trilogy.

I can understand why someone might be dettered by the editing and writing flaws, but I think one's overall opinion on the film depends on the approach taken (i.e. holistically).

Easily one of the best trilogies in contemporary mainstream cinema.

Also, I should add that the really great thing about this film is that it stands on its own and is distinct from both BB and TDK. Not even the fan-service and throwbacks feel too forced and misplaced ( although the flashback sequences were superfluous, imo)

Without those flashbacks the average movie goer would have been even more confused. Even on GAF really obvious plot points are confusing some people.

Others have pointed out that Bane sounds like Connery.

According to the IMBD trivia page Hardy based the voice on an Irish bare knuckle brawler called Bartley Gorman.

Well i was going to hold off till next month with the crowds die off but i am watching my nieces for the next few days and they somehow convinced me into seeing it in an hour.

Hopefully it isn't jam packed and hopefully it lives up to the hype, wish my wallet luck because they are gonna break me on snacks.

Roger Ebert did not seem to find it on par with Dark Night, and most of the times I usually agree with him. Hmm....

Going to see it tomorrow night, if everything goes according to plan. We'll see.
