Guild Wars 2 Launch Date announced: August 28th, 2012

Never had a problem with melee Guardian in PvE. WvW I take more of a support/ranged role but there are still a lot of opportunities to go in, especially if you spec for CC&damage block (aegis). Sword/Greatsword/2H Mace are absolutely viable and have distance closing abilities anyway. Thief PvP melee last BWE made me consider giving it one character spot... to a mode I was sure I wasn't going to touch. Not sure how it works with PvE but can't imagine it to be broken. Warrior is basically long distance melee as well tho I only tried one to lvl 10~.

Melee isn't perfect for sure, but it's a far cry from "not being viable." It's super viable.

well, melee not being viable is kinda misleading since any class can be melee or ranged (well, ele seems to be stuck at range).

Trying out Guardian again, and im liking it a lot more. Greatsword is fantastic for guardian. the skills go really well together. Im digging the fifth skill especially. drag em too me, drop down my 2 skill and WW them to death. neat combo

Decisions!

Having played each class until at least 5 (yeah I know, not a lot of time this weekend), it's just seems to me that melee classes are at a huge disadvantage PVE. I was always chasing after mobs that were running to whoever pulled aggro while on the range toons I could easily tag multiple mobs to get the XP from afar.

Does it get better at higher levels?

Save your 1h sword charge, axe toss cripple, 2h sword charge/spinning thing for when they flee.

If that doesn't work I roll with a bow for the pin-down... then swap to my 2h again and smash faces. The options are there - if you don't spam attacks for the sake of spamming, its never a problem, imo. I roll 2h and bow or axe/axe and bow - love dual wielding.

I've been playing as an Asura Mesmer all weekend, and I've been enjoying it alright - especially as a troll in PvP making dudes fight my clones as I work to play a support in big fights. Quite satisfying.

But then I put a greatsword on my Mesmer. I feel like a 3 foot tall god with that thing, especially in PvE. Very satisfying. I can't wait to roll a Mesmer as my main now that I know the great sword gives me great (ranged!) damage.

I thought I was for sure going have Norn Elementalist as my main until I started playing an Asura Guardian. Then I created a Charr Warrior to test that class out in case I wanted to be an Asura Warrior instead of Guardian and I like that class/race combination too. Why is it so hard to choose?

Melee is viable and fun if you pay attention and know what you are doing, i have only played Guardian and Elementalist (past Lv15) and they have Skills which permit you to close the gap if your enemy runs, say in the form of Charges (Ride the Lightning for Ele Dagger and Leap of Faith for Guardian GS). You also have Knockdowns and Inmobilize if you need more help, and if everything fails, you need to chase your enemy and well, that should be understood as that is the life of fighting in Melee, enemies run,you follow.

With respect of Fighting bosses, i found that the Big ones (The special ones that have a nice target bar and are huge), if you understand and see how they use their skill, you can survive and fight pretty well, of course it helps if you can mix it up changing to a range weapon if you need to GTFO from a melee range skill and later change back to melee weapon and charge in. The Veteran ones are almost the same, tho at low levels they aren't so dangerous.

In WvW is kinda special, if you go against a zerg as a melee, well even as a range but at less extent, you should expect to be targeted and get big damage fast and need to play smart and with caution. If there are few enemies and you have support, you can easily go and fight melee.

If you add a Hammer in there is holy shit, big damage incoming, GS and Hammer synergize really well.

The visual cues are pretty hard to notice though for melee, other than the red aoe circles.
Compared to some single player console game, it's not that great.

They work in smaller group situations, but in the large WvWvW battles, they become nothing but big "SHOOT ME" targets. Often WvWvW breaks into large scale shoot fests between sides, any melee who charge forward get auto targeted by everyone and instantly taken out. Getting within range a person can do, but your going to get raped as everyone attacks you as their is little to no penalty to have a melee user in your face.

Everyone has access to range if they want and seems most players have their weapon set swap to a range. If your going to melee in WvWvW you are going to have to pick your battles carefully or stick to being more of a defensive role or support.

I think this is more because of the uncoordination for the most part. If there was some coordination and one side all charged with melee... i think the ranged side might get fucked good. Trouble is coordinating such an attack.

Now that they modified the camera distance they were more easier for me to identify but i agree they should make them more easier to notice.

Melee is completely viable if you're good and make good use of your skills. I was tearing it up in PvP with a hammer-guardian just now, usually scoring in the top 3 on my team.

SPvP melee is really good. They can chase down range like a mofo and take tons of hits if they get enough defense.

WvW not so much in big fights, but they should really just break off and do skirmishes on undefended camps and whatever.

Is warrior still the strongest in PVP? In GW1, it sure was...atleast for me

Warriors were good at nothing in GW1, at least when Dervishs came in. I actually did find them to be pretty good in SPvP. Had many one on ones with necros, mesmers, elementalist and always won. And then took out my mace and tore up grouped up players.

Of course, my build was almost all defense traits.

Can anyone answer this? Is there a best class for pvp? I know people were complaining that elementist kinda suck at pvp etc

Warrior is considered to be the strongest class in sPvP right now

Elementalist are actually quite good, the most common complaint is that they're too squishy (they can be build quite tanky though)

I think brute force DPS classes are going to be the strongest in PvP for a while until people get the hang of conditions and combos and how to execute them correctly.

so far it seems that "tanky dps" (a term League of Legends players should be familiar with) are the go-to professions for pub stomping. Basically, they can take a lot of punches and strike back hard (professions like Warriors, Guardians, melee Rangers). Out-and-out damage professions, on the other hand, tend to not live very long (and are outdamaged by Warriors anyway ;) )

Im really liking rolling with a bunch of minions as a necro. I think this definitel cinched it. Necro bloodsucking minion dude for my 3rd character

As for the telegraphs, yea, its hard to notice. They should tie more of them to sounds. Like a big grunt or a screech or something

My favorite necro weapons are dagger and focus. I like the axe/focus for range as well. Havent tried out the staff yet

Staff is nothing but AoEs other than the auto attack. I'm not sure if it's the best for just fighitng mobs and doing good damage.

What's everyone's favorite Necro weapons?

scepter/horn + staff, focused on condition damage (and minions)

I thought it was a unique combination, but as it turned out that's what most Necros play

I might be the only one who prefers Plague to the other elite skills though (Lich form is too vulnerable imo)

Of course once organized alot is going to change, but a large portion of WvWvW is alays going to have lot of pug zergs going on no matter what. With all the attacking and defending scenarios it basically becomes needed that melee users will either just be standing their pounding on gate doors or they going to have to swap to a ranged weapon. Just see lot of people doing a whole lot of nothing if they go pure melee build in WvWvW. At least have ranged weapons to swap to, it just makes sense

Another thing that will hamper coordination is the lag. I know I was getting plenty when there was a shit ton of people on the screen

I'm so ready for release!

I played a bit here and there for this BWE. Tried out both Asura and Sylvari and like them both a lot. I'm sure I will make them both come launch. I just didn't want to put that much time into the BWE with it being about a month out.

Anyone playing Mesmer? It's my highest lvl character and they feel feel underwhelming. I use GS Septor/pistol. I've heard they are reworking them before release because they have the most complaints. I like the concept of the class, but just seems boring right now.

Also, I finished all the heart quest at lvl 11, and the noob human area goes to lvl 17, just seems like I don't get enough XP to lvl on par with the areas, also you can't really "grind" on mobs like other MMO's.

I have to say I am extremely pleased with what I played. I made a ranger, elementalist and engineer. I have no idea what I am going o play first.

One of my laptop fans crapped out this week (replacement on its way), so unfortunately I wasn't able to try this.

Any word on whether there will be a demo out early? I'm not ready to drop $60 on this so soon, especially after Steam sale + MoP looming.

Considering there's a month left I highly doubt there will be any significant overhauls to the Mesmer class, especially since they haven't attempted anything of the sort in all these past betas.

I have to say, I am digging the dagger/focus minion necro build I made. I havent tried it out at all beyond target dummies, but it sounds awesome to me in my head, lol. Full on death and blood magic with traits boosting minions, then life leech, then dagger skills. All the mobile minions i can get.

Itll probably suck for DEs and Dungeons cause all my minions will die quickly. But hey, at least they will leave a posion cloud behind! I think i will absolutely wreck in the rest of PvE though and I imagine that I will be real hard to kill in any PvP scenario

Yay

This is how I am. lol In theory my healing build should be decent. I have 4 minions with traits for more health, more damage, life steal (hopefully the trait for life steal healing nearby allies works the way I think it does and my pets will be healing the entire group).

After careful consideration I will be maining a Charr Warrior and Asura Engi. I am digging dual axe with bow on my warrior. I haven't paid attention to balance at all and don't care. It was hard to choose a main between the two but I love the playstyle.

My problem with Necro is my mind has difficulty understand "advanced" skills and just wants DPS. Maybe I should make Engineer my main?

Having devoted my whole weekend to the beta I managed to get my Sylvari engineer up to level 40.

I think the fastest way to level is crafting by far. I only got 100% in one area, however I got up to 240 in cooking, 180 in jewel craft, and around 50 in another 3 professions. Jewle craft was my focus and with the money I got from selling at the outpost leveling cookery was quick and easy (given you can buy most of what you need from vendors for cheap) and the amount of exp I got from it was ludicrous.

Engineer was pretty fun, I used turrets in pve and focused on rifle/elixirs in PvP with my traits focused on power and crits. Seems like I could take people down really fast though However I feel tools are pretty useless along with the ultimates, so I'm not too sure what I'll roll when it comes to release. Outside of the wvw issues I had a great time in the beta, can't wait for the release next month.

Absolutely LOVE it!

Have you played Engi in previous BWE's? If so, what are your impressions on how the class was updated?

Absolutely love that crafting gives on par or better xp than hunting mobs. Now I won't feel like I am going to fall behind friends when I chose to stop hunting mobs, DE's, Hearts, etc.

More pics, people!!!!

I played up to level 15 on a Human Ranger. I didn't know what to expect going into the beta, having never played the previous weekends or Guild Wars 1, but I absolutely loved it.
Some pics of my adventure. I'm kind of sad that my character is going to be wiped but I don't mind doing it all again come the 25th!

(Sorry for the low quality shots, I was having fps issues >.<
the fact that they're steam captured shots doesn't help either!)

I am so sad rn.

Coudn't even touch the beta this weekend. :/

Oh well, august is not that far...

Can someone link me to the thread with the GAF guild information, please? :)

The basic game is alright, pretty standard mmo with a few new approaches to thing, but what sets gw2 apart is the wvwvw, so good. So much awesome potential in the pvp.

My FPS tanked hard in WvWvW, like 25 fps. Wish you could actually set your graphics settings for WvWvW apart from everything else.
