Deactivating your social media: The Breaking Point

I have decided I needed to just get away from all that social media networking. I deactivated/pending deletion my Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Raptr, etc.

It's just too much at once. Also learning info about people you never wanted to find out.

I felt like crap earlier, and just decided to get rid of it all. Hopefully I'll feel better after this "social media drought". I know it's going to be a weird couple of weeks, but I think I can manage.

Has anyone done the same thing? It's not because I want to avoid/not talk to people, it just feels like I've been submerged in this sea too long, and I just need to come up for air.

For the life of me I don't know how people can juggle more than two social media apps/sites at once. I've got too much shit to do.

I've done this by only having a Facebook. I just keep it simple with my FB, I just check out what my friends are up to every now and then, post the occasional status, upload a photo or two from time to time, and leave it at that. If you stick to one social media outlet it's fairly easy to avoid feeling overwhelmed, in my case anyway.

Good on you for cutting the cord though!

I'm on facebook trolling people now. Just being a slight dick. I gather the courage to do this to everyone I am acquainted with like once a year or so. If they laugh it off and we can have a conversation, cool, if you delete me or get upset or even ignore it, fuck you.

Facebook is all that I use for anything involving social media. So no, I really don't have a problem with it or have ever reached a "breaking point". Good for you trying it out though. I wish you the best of luck.

I've almost done this. I essentially only use Facebook for its messaging and event features and only rarely check my news feed. I've unsubscribed from anyone except the people I actually have an interest in seeing updates from, so there isn't much to keep up with.
I used to follow a lot of people on Twitter, but I was tired of having hundreds of unread tweets every time I stepped away from the Internet for a few hours, almost all of which were inevitably inane garbage anyway. People who devote the time to actively keeping up with many social networks baffle me. I basically have no obligations right now and still can't imagine wasting that much time reading about other people's lives.

The courage to be a dick over the internet. Inspiring stuff.

So you want to be kind of annoying but if I don't respond I'm the asshole. Huh.

I mean, I thought we were growing up and stuff.

Am I the only person to have never signed up for FB? People seriously get angry at me when I tell them I won't sign up.

"WHY NOT?! WHAT ARE YOU HIDING?! WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU????"

I deactivated my Facebook after I realized it turned into a cesspool of stupidity.

Yet, my Twitter/Instagram feeds stay open constantly...

Isn't that the kind of shit that got you in trouble in your relationship? So much for changing.

I might as well as this question here since it's somewhat similar. I'm trying to delete my Windows Live Hotmail account but every time I go to the account setting page and click on "cancel account" it always gives me a "sorry, this service is currently unavailable, please try again later". Does anyone know how to cancel a Hotmail account?

I think I might have done away with Facebook by now if it wasnt so useful for student groups/coordination in university.

Then again I'm not on it a whole lot, and limit it based on school colleagues and close friends so it's pretty okay (never ever had a desire to have 800 friends). I go about thinning the herd every school year or so, so it's been manageable.

I know what your saying as well OP, I was considering getting off facebook for while, maybe in a month or so I will try it. But for me facebook is transforming into those stupid "like this if you ____" and melodrama about people complaining about their daily lives, it's getting old.

FB is pretty much defined by the people you have on your list. So these threads complaining about it amuse me.

Shit, gaf and twitter are hard to handle for me. I always end up neglecting one or the other for a few days.

This for sure. Facebook and E-mail/Gmail is more than enough.

edit- wait, GAF counts as another? Oh shit...

the most I had at one time was twitter and fb, now i'm down to just fb. i ended up deleting everybody except for people I actually see in real life regularly

i catch myself going to fb all the time, i'm trying to wean myself off it as much as possible

There's nothing wrong with it, but I just felt like I was on it TOO much.

Like I always had the need to check my notifications, , @tweets, messages, etc. It's like I wanted to feel like I was actually "someone".

My motivation shouldn't have to be driven by who's talking to me and who's not. Most people have my number. If they really want to talk to me, they'll call or text.

And don't even get me started on Tumblr. I don't have an account there but that whole place just seems to be a huge waste of time.

I was joking just now :( I'm actually trying to be legitimately nice but I'm scared it will be perceived as being a dick. I don't know how to be nice.

I don't even bother with FB communications beyond if seeing someone is alive or able to hang out anymore. I find most feeds kind of superficial.

Not to derail. But are you the same guy who had the girlfriend problems?

Edit: Beaten

Respect peoples personal space. Don't use revenge as a tactic in your arsenal. Treat others how you want to be treated if you make a mistake? this isn't really something that the average person should have to learn. If you've even been hurt you know how much it stings, you don't want it for yourself, so don't push it on others.

???

After a picture of me with a womans thong on my head at a Japanese wedding party was brought to my attention by my MOM, I decided that facebook just wasn't worth the hassle for me and I never looked back.

I almost exclusively use twitter. I wanted to delete my Facebook account for a while now, but the problem is that'd cut connections with most of my friends/acquaintances.

Everyone should just use twitter and be happy.

Woah wtf!! i have Red Faction Guerrilla and played the fuck out of it, why did i never hear about Raptr.

I also thought Instagram was just a program for uploading photos to facebook?

Damn im out of the loop here.
I use facebook pretty much to see who is getting married and shit, I use twitter much like those old school RSS feeds for news and some pop culture.
Every now and then I interrogate some developers online.

I dont use anything else, mainly if not solely cuz i honestly dont know any other social media networks.

P.S I still have my myspace and hi5 accounts, this thread made me want to recheck those accounts.....but i just dont give a fuck.

My news feed was filled with stupid memes. Every. Single. Day. Most people I knew were anime fans(I don't have a problem with that), but to post silly meme images every 30 minutes of the day, was just tiring.

All I did on my FB feed was yap about games, but I had a nice audience and people that listened, were really supportive on my opinions and we had nice conversations about said game or games in the status.

13 days to go until permanent deletion.

Facebook is the be all/end all for me. I like my social media to be consolidated and FB does it pretty well (friends, messages, events, photos, video chat, synced e-mails/phone numbers, etc.). I can suffer most of the eye-roll inducing news feeds for this system.

I deactivated my Twitter thinking it would be good to check news feeds, but then I realized I don't do that, and it's just a gateway drug to boosting everyone's egos with following/followers with the most mundane of tweets. I can't bother with Instagram or Tumblr since I don't really care for checking out "normal people's" stuff. They're good for finding gifs or behind-the-scenes of your favorite stuff though.

I deactivated my Facebook account at the beginning of May, feels good man. I still heavily use Twitter, as well as Instagram, though. It helps that they both feel a lot less 'personal' than FB does, and are better mobile apps than FB imo

Deleted my facebook about a year ago. I got fed up with the constant post from girls I went to high school with posting pictures of their babies, and my exgf posting pics of her with new guys.

Feels good man. Never had a twitter or anything really so now I'm social media free! I do all my communicating via my phone... Another brightside, I am now alot better at getting newer friend's numbers as that will be my only way to contact them. I used to always forget to do that

I thought about just deleting people on FB and keeping it to very close friends, family and shit I follow for info (sports teams, TV shows etc..) because of conflicts of intrest, annoying posting, etc..

But I did that last year and a guy I went to highschool with wanted to fight me, then he started a campaign of attacking me with other people I went to highschool with...it was odd.

I added this guy I went to highschool with 15 years ago, then he tried to argue EVERY update to my status I made or tell me I was wrong in some way.
I talk about Breaking Bad and he lectures me about it being pro-drug, I buy my 10 year old a cell phone cause hes home alone for an hour after school, Im a bad parent etc...
I got tired of it and deleted him then decided it was time to just delete all these "strangers" for my own privacy as well as avoiding arguements in the future. So I delete the pain in the ass guy and then go down the list deleting all these people I havent seen in 15 years, ya know strangers. My idea was "why do I need Pete from 10th grade looking at my family or knowing what I'm doing plus it limits future arguments with stragers about my ideas on topics"...

Well that didnt go over well...he called me out on his facebook and started rallying the troops of people we went to highschool with, it became a conspiracy..

These are sceen grabs a I got, theres more...I havent even seen these people looking to "put my lights out" in 15 years. I got "fuck you" private messages from people I added to my FB who I went to highschool with and had no clue who they were, and more crazy shit..this post of his went on for 50+ comments of people attacking me, calling me names, wanting to fight me...all 30+ year old adults, many married with kids and such..
People take that deleting shit SERIOUSLY!

holy shit at pkm's fb link^

I once deleted my ex, and she texted me a bit later and started bitching at me and saying that I was being immature. Never had anyone get that aggro though.
