Guild Wars 2 Launch Date announced: August 28th, 2012

I'm actually very much like that most of the time. I had to force myself to think differently about GW2. Where others might see beautiful visuals, I just see numbers and mechanics. That's just how I look at games.

Usually, unless there's a mechanical reason to do something, I won't bother. For instance, if a jumping puzzle leading to a cliff has just a beautiful view at the top, I won't bother. Now, if there's an object up there that gives me some gameplay benefit, I'll absolutely go up there.

I'm not sure precisely when it happened but at some point I lost a great deal of interest in satisfying the games and became more interested in satisfying myself. The numbers stopped having a lot of meaning to me. I mean, I'll do the Daily Achievements on GW2 but only because it's having me do things that I would have done anyway.

When I was younger I made it a point to beat every game, break every high score... But sometime in my teens, I stopped giving a shit and would just do what I wanted until I stopped enjoying myself.

I'm not suggesting that I'm somehow above such things - my brain just sort of disconnected from that aspect of gaming. This sense of self-expression is also why I absolutely love Minecraft.

I have i2500k(not overclocked) and a GTX 570HD and 8 gigs of ram and have been running 60fps consistantly since the first beta. Apparently I was lucky though...

My old setup was like that. Didn't get to try out the beta then. Now my specs are

i7 2600k @ 4.3
GTX 670

Runs 60 fps most of the time. The only time it would really bog down was when I was in certain areas of Diessa Plateau, it would hit sub 20 fps. I hope that nvidia's next drivers help or ANet further optimizes the game. Or both.

Just watched it online and downloaded it to check for differences and report back, sir. They look pretty much the same to me, mostly smooth with the occasional slight framerate drop.

Amazing video BTW! Are you planning to make a longer one in retail? It would be great.

Also, all this talk of exploring, finding stuff and all is making withdrawal so much worse... :(

Thanks for checking, glad to hear it's working fine for people, not sure what is going on over here.

Yes I will be making quite a few videos come launch. I wanted to make more over the weekends but with so little time to do everything I never got as much footage as I really wanted to.

Still no mention of free transmutation or some similar system for HoM items.

Hammer is pretty cool looking.

Also, wasn't the Black Widow Spider pet (HoM 30 reward) in the BWE already ?

Yeah, I hope they'll still have those free transmutation stones for HoM stuff. I really wanna keep using that stuff, especially the FDS, diamond aegis and armor set (and the cat, but that doesn't need a stone :P).

Ugh. This is why I have a hard time trying to play MMOs with fans of the genre. I see beauty, architecture, wondrous landscapes, adventure and excitement. They only see function, what's the most effecient way to hit level cap so the real game begins?

I hear ya. Every time someone asks "what seems to be the most powerful class" I die a little inside.
I'm not sure what I feel about achievers being turned off by GW2. On one hand I'm not going to miss them if they're going to complain about stuff like no raids, no PvP stat progression, and so on. On the other hand, I want GW2 to do as well as possible, so that it can support itself and new updates, so perhaps I shouldn't wish for these players to be turned off. I guess the best thing would be to convert them to the "explorer" mentality, but I'm not sure that's realistic.

In my case, it was a necessary consequence of there being more games, and me having much less time. I also can't understand how people still get all serious business-like with stats and equipment and stuff when they know the next expansion is going to render everything obsolete. Ironically, that's probably not going to be the case in GW2; in GW1, campaigns didn't raise level cap, right? If you used a character from another campaign in those, did he get downlevelled like in GW2? I know very little of GW1.

Can't stop thinking about how fun Keg Brawl was. I hereby propose the creation of a Keg Brawl team, the Great Artic Foxes, or whatever else.

Also GUYS! ONE MORE MONTH UNTIL RETAIL! :D

OK this is most interesting. I ran a few tests with Heaven DX11 Benchmark and it appears overclocking makes my performance worse, which rolls in line with what ANet stated about OCing your GPU.

I ran 4 tests - 2 with OC and 2 with OEM specs and here were my results (avg fps, score):

850/2000/1.025v
24.4, 614
24.5, 616

797/1950/1.013v
29.4, 741
29.4, 739

I am using MSI Afterburner to OC - even though it's not much - it has affected performance as ANet has stated. I should try the test with Beta drivers, as well.

OMG at the attrocious questions from the KOTAKU community. It is just terrible. Feel sorry for Mike Zadjorny.

Mike Zadorojny:
All dungeons are designed for 5 players. There are what we call "mini-dungeons" that you can find out in the world that we spawn with harder monsters that sometimes require larger groups.
This sounds very interesting. Wonder if this happened at all during the BETA.

I guess this would be done through the Mystic Forge!

The Live Team will be adding things new and interesting things to keep the world alive. Stay tuned for more on this post-launch! (It's going to be exciting.)
This is awesome!!!!

Just a heads up, because someone will inevitably asked what happened and because he's an officer.

Maxrpg was banned until the 25th of August (that HAS to be intentional) for posting in the Mists of Pandaria thread (post is here). His comment was taken as proselytizing, I guess, though it doesn't seem more than a casual comment. Whatever, Mods have their reasons, I guess, and I won't say any more on the matter since I'm pretty sure some of them take offense at having their judgement question.

So... yeah... GW2GAF might want to just stay out of that thread in general.

I think it is just a general 1 month ban. It is just a coincidence that it landed on the day GW2 comes out.

Sure they'll be safe if they actually talk about WoW, heh.
You know most of us would just be in there to troll.

Annnnnnnnd I just realized that Polymock is supposed to actually sound like Pokemon.

WoW addon 1 month after GW2? Great, thus my problem from one page ago is solved :D

Great news for me and Blizzard!

I finally decided what proffession to start with, it will be guardian after seeing the ign video on youtube.

Also I noticed what I didn't do in the beta.....switching weapons. I had no idea that all of the skills on the first 5 slots was weapon based. So I didn't try out that many skills in the beta....maybe thats why I got bored with the same sets of skills I used the whole beta

But that's like discussing horse-drawn buggies in a car thread.

What class were you playing in the Beta though? Elementalists and Engineers don't get a second set because of their Attunements / tool kits.

I played Elementalist and used staff the whole time

Maybe I didn't miss anything? lol

But doesn't matter. When I start as guardian now, I'll know what to do

His comment was smug and snarky. I'm not surprised what happened.

Also, people play more than one MMORPG. People don't have to be so adversarial about it.

Actually, they haven't traditionally played more than one. I was considered odd because I had two subscriptions, one for WOW and another for COH. But now, with GW2 being purchase to play without a sub? Yeah, there's no reason for people to avoid the game. From a value standpoint, it's an exceptional purchase.

Nope, you didn't miss it. I don't think they would even give you the tutorial tip when you would normally unlock it. But you did have access to 4 attunements, so that should make up for it.

On the subject of Elementalists though, I really liked their Dagger abilities. That lightning whip was quite cool looking.

Really? Because every hardcore MMO player I know seem to have one main MMO and one MMO they're playing around with. Which reminds me I should really cancel my TERA sub.

Yes, but that's not exactly the 'normal' MMO player. Most MMO players play WOW, and that's it. People would hear that I was playing another MMO - be it EVE or COH, depending on the time period - and they were like, "Seriously?? Why?" But with all the F2P stuff around nowadays, it probably is going to become more popular, though I suspect it will never be the norm for the majority of the MMO audience.

I did not parse it as particularly smug and/or snarky, but none of those tones are conveyed well over written text, so who knows. For all we know it was a honestly innocent, helpful comment to show people different choices.

Anyone has his email address? I know first hand how lonely it is to wait for GW2 with nobody else in your environment interested in it, so if he wants I can provide him with some conversation in the meantime.

Also, there's been much talk about people being able to play both WoW and GW2. While that is possible in theory, I'm not sure that many people will actually like both. I can't see anyone really enjoying GW2 being able to go back to WoW; if any of them do, it will most likely either because they didn't really like GW2 (many examples of that in this very thread, nothing wrong with it), or because GW2 did run out of content for them.

Well, I play on a laptop with an

i5 -2450m CPU @2.50GHz
6GB Ram
AMD Radeon HD 7690M

And I had to run it on medium to low settings and it still ran real choppy in DEs and WvW :(

Was quite disappointing since I think my laptop should run the game better

As for Karma, I think I am going to have a problem spending it since stuff like that, I have a natural inclination to horde and get the 'best' stuff, whatever that is. I probably should look at what I can buy with Karma and see if I convince myself not to horde

I enjoyed a lot about the three beta events I played, but I really wish it was optimized a bit better. I know there is still time, but when I'm playing a game like this I really prefer a smooth experience without FPS swings between 20-60. Perhaps I'm being a bit unrealistic since most MMO's struggle when there are a good deal of players in the same areas.

I also need to go learn a bit more about the Thief, I really had no intention of playing one until I gave it a shot over the last hour of BWE3. Now I don't think I can go back to my Necro or Guardian.

Hasn't Maxrpg been banned multiple times before? I could swear I've seen his name greyed out more than a few times.

Same thing happened with snesfreak. Multiple bans means a shorter leash.

Hopefully they're just optimizing the whole game now, since they don't have to worry about any more beta events.

(I know they have been doing a little bit during beta events, or so I'm told, at least.)

Think i must have been lucky then.

Running with a:
560ti OC'd
i5 2500k not OC'd
8GB RAM

Been getting 60 FPS maxxed out.

I have a 570, i5 2500k (OC'd to 4.0ghz), and 8gb RAM haha. Something's gotta be funky with my client or something, ugh. Although I've read pretty disparate reports from people with approximately the same hardware that we both have.

I have your exact setup except my CPU isn't oc'd. Hmm...

Got 30 FPS without fail the whole BWE running on my laptop, on medium settings...

i5 460 @ 2.53GHz
4 GB Ram
ATI Mobility Radeon 5650 1GB

Fairly surprised at how well it ran actually.

The good news is that Arena is actively trying to improve the client based on BWE feedback. I saw a marked improvement in framerate even in the course of the last BWE.
