Guild Wars 2 Launch Date announced: August 28th, 2012

Got my video re-rendered and put back on Youtube. It still seems to hitch but it seems to do it for different people at different times, so I think it's just Youtube being dumb with the video.

Shows off areas within the human starting zone, some Divinity's Reach, and finally a vista in the Norn area.

Let me know if there are any weird playback issues with this one. Hope you guys enjoy -

At launch I'm taking him to Lion's Arch and we're running around and just exploring the place. If he doesn't enjoy that place, I think he's just screwed.

Good Luck! Tried to show an MMO buddy LA over the weekend and he was not interested at all. His attitude was basically "It's just a city, that's where you go to meet people and trade stuff.". He could not have cared less. But this guy didn't really like the game as a whole at that point.

Just bought this on gmg with the 20 percent coupon. I haven't read, watched or played any guild wars 2 but I played a bit of the first when it came out. I have a new laptop coming so u should be all set to join the fun come release day.

A quick question, is there stuff to do or the "casual" mmoer. For example in rift I really liked exploring an gathering all the artifacts. In wow their is all sorts of things like professions and rare mounts and such. I like dungeons but I don't want to be stuck raiding end game.

Cool vid.

Can't wait to explore. I think the best part is that for endgame (for me) will just be PVP. Since the gear isn't really an issue it's awesome that I won't have to farm for gear to just fill out a raid spot. That is the most appealing part of the game for me.

Wonder if they'll be doing a midnight release for this game. I got a response back when I asked if they planned to have a midnight launch for those that get the headstart from pre-purchasing and this is what they said.

If you got a pre-purchase code though, you don't need a physical copy until (I think) ~3 days post launch.
Then you'll need a retail key to continue.

It is awesome when the only other "MMO" you have played is Guild Wars and all you were looking forward to was to this game to come out. ANET sold me on this game back in 2007 with their huge article on PCGamer about how they will change everything about GW1 when they make GW2.

I don't find myself comparing it to any other MMO because I never played them. Never had interest in a subscription MMO because of the subscription.

FUCK! It is only July 25th. FUCK!

Yeah, I know. I pre-purchased from the official site, have the client. I was just curious if servers would be live by Friday the 24th at midnight.

What is the consensus on the Thief?
From what I read, it seems a class with many issues that needs a lot of reworking :(

from a sPvP perspective, pistol/dagger + shortbow was quite good, pistol/pistol and sword/pistol builds were gimmiky/boring, the other weapon combinations weren't as effective (imo). Initiative still needs to be properly balanced and they need to fix stealth so that you can't be targeted by skills anymore. A lot of the utility skills were not very useful. Those are the main problems, as far as I'm concerned. Fortunately, the Thief profession, along with the Necro and Mesmer, will be the main focus for balancing.

Ugh. This is why I have a hard time trying to play MMOs with fans of the genre. I see beauty, architecture, wondrous landscapes, adventure and excitement. They only see function, what's the most effecient way to hit level cap so the real game begins?

Did it look choppy at all? It plays perfectly smooth when I open it in media player, just trying to figure out why it doesn't look the same on Youtube.

Excellent video! Very nicely done. Thumb'd, commented and subbed!

I think it's actually a common thing for gamers in general. Many are objectives and goals based.

Telling them, "Just wander around" is incredibly confusing, it seems.

I don't believe I have any points whatsoever. I only have Prophecies/Factions (as my friends gravitated towards other MMOs - I joined them) - so I will have absolutely no rewards going into GW2. I have sadfaces because of this - but have smileyfaces since I am ditching my friends and playing what I want to play this time.

You can get points fairly quickly in the other expansions if you wanted to before launch. I went from 15 to 20 points in about 15 minutes when I logged on the other night for the first time in a year. Depending on how old your account is, you probably have a few mini-pets stored up, which is some easy points right there.

Also just finishing the campaigns gives you points as well.

So how was performance in the last beta? Is maintaining 60fps with a decent system still impossible?

I have a decent system, and the answer was no. Seems some people with top top of the line systems can. Better than it was in BWE1 for sure, but far from what I'd expect my system to run it.

My girlfriend runs an i5-2500k, gtx 460, 8 gigs of ram and ran the game at ultra with 60 fps, managed to fraps most of the weekend too with no noticeable frame rate drop.

I run on a 4 year old rig and managed to run at medium-high at around 30-50 fps. How many people were near me seemed to be the ultimate deciding factor on how well my rig performed.

I had pretty awesome performance except in the windy section of the Metrica Province jumping puzzle for some reason.

Rendering wind is hard.

I'm really tempted to buy EotN and get these achievements in anticipation for GW2. Unfortunately my account was hacked in 2009 an when I reclaimed it I found all of my most played characters had been deleted. The only character left that I'd invested time into was an Assassin which I'd completed the factions campaign with. Really haven't touched it since, a bit intimated and frustrated. I have about 7k, a few ecto, some other things I can sell but I'm unsure of the market atm.

Man for some reason I'm intimidated by the release of this game

I will be sucked in even though right now I haven't been very active keeping up on anything.

Is there an updated list of which servers will have which clans? I remember seeing one a few months ago.

It's value is somewhat diminished given the massive contraction in worlds to roll on. I fully expect there to be more worlds come launch compared to BWE3, so it's hard to say definitively where anyone is going.

I have i2500k(not overclocked) and a GTX 570HD and 8 gigs of ram and have been running 60fps consistantly since the first beta. Apparently I was lucky though...

I almost have the exact same setup.

i5 at 4.2
570 at 850/2000
16gb DDR3
1920x1080

I could hit 40fps but that's about it on max settings. I read on the Beta forum that overclocking can negatively affect performance but I haven't tried stock clocks on anything during BWE3 since I would like to see more optimization before adjusting system settings for one single game.

All of my other games run just fine - there was someone with a 680 sitting worse than I am so I'm unsure as to what the bugs are - ANet says that there is an issue with current release drivers that is fixed with NVidia's beta drivers - but i'm not a fan of using beta drivers.

I'm hoping they will get some issues squared away by release. For most of the beta I tuned settings to medium-ish and ran 60 most of the time until highly populated areas. The largest culprits seem to be "All" reflections (terrain and sky seem fine) and shadowing - lowering these settings to medium gave a rather large performance boost.

EDIT: I'm actually thinking about going back to stock clocks for my 570 since I really haven't noticed a performance boost in any game with the slight jump I gave it.

I'll be levelling with my now out of hospital friend who has decided to go Charr Warrior! Rawr!

I still can't figure out what to play as. I found Engineer to be a very fun class with an incredibly diverse skillset and a lot of fun in PVP. Good flavour with the Charr Iron Legion as well.

The elementalist though would compliment a warrior better with the types of combo field it can lay down and the huge amount of warrior finishers there are. The thing is, PVP with an elementalist appeared pretty hard. sPVP was such a twitch reaction micromanagement bonanza switching between all the attunements. The engineer seemed like a much better class to play to his potential, but an engineer doesn't compliment a warrior with combos. At all. :(

Halp!

I have exact same thing as you except that my card is a GTX 560TI and I as well have been getting 60FPS the whole time.

I have the game installed on an SSD, but I don't know if that actually helps with FPS.

Jira,
Why do you say you were lucky?

I'm going to start with 2 classes and play them every other day. I can't decide on a dedicated main yet, either. So I'll be enjoying a Warrior and Ranger/Engineer (undecided) right off the bat. I want to play Charr Warrior and Charr Engi - but might swing Norn Ranger to change things up a bit as a secondary leveler.

Just watched it online and downloaded it to check for differences and report back, sir. They look pretty much the same to me, mostly smooth with the occasional slight framerate drop.

Amazing video BTW! Are you planning to make a longer one in retail? It would be great.

Also, all this talk of exploring, finding stuff and all is making withdrawal so much worse... :(

I wouldn't worry about what does what in what situation, just play with what mechanics you like simply because it could all be nerfed/buff/changed a week after launch.

An Engi would do pretty well with a warrior, the support kits would allow the warrior to stay up front and take the damage while the engi supported/dps in the back without having to worry about constantly dodging enemies.

Eles are pretty twitchy in sPvP but can bring some serious pain in WvW simply because of how much AoE they can lay down during keep sieges both on defending and attacking. Nothing better than putting down a meteor shower on an entire group of reds who are attacking the door to a keep.

I have the game installed on an SSD, but I don't know if that actually helps with FPS.

SSD will help with loading and streaming content - will eliminate stuttering during streaming but not FPS.

I'm am fully confused now. I can play games at 60 without a hitch - save for BF3 and Skyrim - which both sit 45ish on max. Not sure if that is about right for my rig or not. I do have other things like steam, my logitech profiler, avast!, etc running in the background but they don't chew up much i wouldn't think.

I had thought it was a dual-monitor issue until I disconnected my 2nd monitor and had no improvements, etc...

Makes me think there's something wrong with my rig O.o

I love this! All the people who think similar about MMOs as me will gather in this game, and all people that are annoying me as hell will quickly go to another, more traditional MMO with fancy graphics and stuff. Awesome :D

Wait, is there even another traditional MMO in sight right now?

I'm actually very much like that most of the time. I had to force myself to think differently about GW2. Where others might see beautiful visuals, I just see numbers and mechanics. That's just how I look at games.

Usually, unless there's a mechanical reason to do something, I won't bother. For instance, if a jumping puzzle leading to a cliff has just a beautiful view at the top, I won't bother. Now, if there's an object up there that gives me some gameplay benefit, I'll absolutely go up there.
