It was originally a physical mask that they determined made his face too thick, since you're layering things on top of flesh. They wanted the face to be thinner like an actual skull. So in the end painstakingly his entire head was rotomated. We're talking matching the live action pixel perfectly. The actual video, and UV layout frame by frame were unwrapped together and comped, so that the artists could make sure verts stayed with the part of the flesh they would represent so that there would be not even a single pixel of drift or slippage. The head was then rendered, with the entire lower half under the eyes being comped on top of the live action. That includes the nose, the cheeks, chins, lips, jawline. All of it ended up being a CG model, since they weren't happy with the thickness of the mask they put on top of him.
