Junk thread. I'm not into music as much as some people I know but finding music is simple using Pandora. It's the easiest way to find artists in a genre you like then from there you can research new artists you haven't heard of before.

Youtube is doing this as well with the recommended videos. I don't like the whole info juggling they do for privacy reasons but I did find some of my favorite jazz tracks through that

Every generation has said this, along with the "kids these days" bullshit. Stop thinking you had some holy fucking grail all to yourself 10 years ago. You didn't. Someone thought that shit sucked and you probably said or thought something similar regarding their sentiments. Fucking cyclical "hur dur what I liked will always be the best forever" is annoying.

If you've gotten older, have a full time job, kids, life basically when do you have time to seek out music? Like many have said it used to just be as simple as turning on the radio. I remember being able to turn on the radio and hop in the car or shower. Why's it become some needle in a haystack search instead of something that just should be?

Look, I am 38 years old. I haven't bothered listening to the radio in 20 years. That's not where you find music. Internet has truly revolutionized it.

I've got amazing music coming out of my nose. Granted, music is a finicky thing and different people have vastly different tolerances for 'range'. Some people literally cannot listen to anything but one very specific kind of music. Other people can listen to anything.

I fall towards the 'anything' end, so in that sense I lucked out.

But even so, there's music everywhere these days.

I'd wager that popular music is the best it's been in a long time. Production is pretty keen (even if the tracks are lame) and stuff like M83 is regularly crossing over.

Makes me wish a band like The Dismemberment Plan could have had this type of environment. They would've been HUGE.

As a teen in the 80s I don't get the nostalgia radio thing. I hated the radio, MTV and Casey Casem's Top 40! I sought out albums I liked. I find it to be the same process today.

People like what I consider bad music. The radios play what people like. I don't like what's on the radio. Somebody's going to lose out in terms of radio airtime, at the moment its you. It used to be people who like shitty club music. Now is their time in the sun, where they are constantly exposed to new music that they enjoy. Now its your turn to put in a modicum of effort to find something you like. And its not like you have to spend an hour a day looking for it. There are probably about 17 people in the internet-accessing world who are literally too busy to find new, good music, and I very much doubt that you're one of them.

Most songs on the radio suck, most shows on television suck. It's because they no longer make the revenue they used to since the internet came around and made it possible to find better videos and music, more suited to yourself personally, than mainstream media ever possibly could.

We are living in a golden age of musical freedom, with outstanding music being produced in every genre imaginable! Some people (like the OP/old people) just don't seem to know how to find it, and thus moan about how modern music is crap, even though it's so much better than at any point in history.

Same reason television is full of reality shows and super-low-budget documentaries-about-aliens: because no one is listening/watching, everyone is online listening to/watching much better stuff.

i would argue that music is better now than ever. there is so much to choose from nowadays so everyone can find their music hence with more people finding music, one can argue that we have a better music situation now.

There's not even an argument, every genre of music is at it's peak right now thanks to people in each genre being able to easily access everyone else's work from around the globe, instantly, take inspiration, and learn. Combine that with no longer needing a manager/record company to get into the business and you've got a creative wet dream. It's really hard to listen to people complain about this when it's the best we've ever had it.

As said before already, there is lots and lots of great music being produced these days if you look for it.
That said as as you get older, I find you start to fall back and "nostalgia" over the bands you listened to when you were young.

This year through GAF and other forums I have discovered excellent artists like Grimes, Purity Ring & First Aid Kit. Before that it was Beach House, DeerHunter, etc..
Its all out there if you look for it.

Because radio is no longer the vanguard in music and no longer lucrative (plus there's no more "playola" practice that was prevalent in the 80s/90s).
All the grunge/indie backlash of the 90s - the "mainstream sux" epidemic - has come full circle and radio is mainstream crap in its purest form now.

You aren't in the cool crowd if you don't like this song!").

It's really a matter of taste. In the 90s (when I was in my 20s) I thought The Cranberries were fluffy, fruity and too Sinead O'Conner-ish for me so I have zero nostalgia for them.

Pandora is better than the radio. It plays and remembers what you personally search for and like. Signing up takes seconds, they hardly spam your email, offer an app for your phone making it easy to connect to your car and best of all, if it plays a song you don't like or heard too many times you can skip it with a touch of the screen or click of a mouse.
