Those who missed Dust: AET's showing last night can watch it RIGHT HERE.

On the Achievement / Trophy thing... I always see lengthy multiplayer ones to be a devs bid to keep people playing the online mode, maybe even longer than they'd do if there was no "virtual prize" for it. Remember, it's SUPPOSE to be quite the achievement to get some of these. Don't the people who truly dedicate to a game deserve to have an emblem that shows how much time they put into it, if anything?

I have to admit, there's a part of me that loves seeing "Insane completionist superfan" style achievements. With all the other stuff that gets dumbed down and over-explained, in order to serve those who aren't crazy uber game fans, it's nice that there's SOMETHING out there that still remembers the traditional style of wanting to plumb every single secret, skill, and knowledge out of your game purchases.

I'm personally kinda tired of puzzle/platform this gen, but I'll be giving Deadlight a shot. Has consistently looked interesting.

But Dust... well, let me note some things about last nights stream (which I caught as a recording...)

- Love the quality of the VA work. Fidget isn't hyper-annoying, Dust himself sound noble,, but with a slight edge of snark, and the blade sounds calm and sharp. (Had to make the pun.)

- Also like the fact they're not forcibly at each others throats all the time. Makes the relationship between them seem pleasant.

- Fidgets fire ability is quite cool; I remember when that was shown in the other trailer, I wondered how easy it'd be to dodge that enemey attack, haha. Was great to watch a near 500 hit combo build up...

- it all moves at such a great clip, too! Always grea to see so much happening, and the system being perfectly ready to take it on.

Overall, hype continues to increase. Stream was worth it, wish it was coming out next WED, just so we didn't have to wait!

Finished Might and Magic Clash of Heroes HD last night, finally. Freaking 30 something hours but I did everything in the SP. Fun game. I encourage anyone to give it a shot as the gameplay is pretty solid and I don't play many strategy games at all. Good for newbies.

I think I'm definitely going to pull the trigger on Deadlight. Feeling the need for a new arcade game after skipping out on Spleunky. After that it's Dust. Not too much for me although I've only been buying a few games during SOA in the past two years (last year it was Bastion and Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet).

Kind of shocked that Deadlight isn't getting straight up praise. I still have to give Spelunky a shot, but if it and Deadlight disappoint, then I think I might just use all my 1200 MSP for Walking Dead episodes, as the preview for the first episode was great.

Hey anyone that has Deadlight for review and has beat it, can you pm me, I am stuck and can not for the life of me figure out how to get past this part!

Dust looks absolutely amazing.
The game is so bought when it comes out, and i hope it paves the road for more high production values titles of the same genre.

I watched a bit of the Dust: AET stream and that game is on a level of beautiful I can't even describe. Noogy, I applaud your work and you've earned every bit of my $15. I wish you all the luck in whatever you do next.

We met Akira Yamaoka yesterday (BTW: awesome concert performance in Úbeda, Spain). The man is completely in love with this game since March, telling everyone about Tequila Works. He even want to collab with them in the future, "not necessarily as GHM, maybe music, maybe another thing":

http://www.gamereactor.es/noticias/27281/Yamaoka+enamorado+de+Deadlight/

The devs at Tequila Works are an awesome group of people. I was fortunate to share boothspace with them at PAX, and they made the 24+ hours of standing in one place much more enjoyable. Very excited for Deadlight.

I saw the Twitch livestream of Dust, and I have one question.

There was an achievement that popped in a cave after unlocking a chest. Appropriately enough, because in said dungeon, sounds were echoing. Was it my imagination, or did the achievement chime even echo?

If so.. uggnffff. Attention to detail, I love it.

Hehe, actually there was a problem with the stream, causing insane amounts of echo. Made voices sounds really crazy as they echoed over and over. There is an echo effect in game, but it's not THAT prominent.

Echoing achievements would have been cool. I know of a way to do that, but too late now heh.

Oh, damn. :( Echoing achievements in future games, you heard it here first!

You still have a sale from me either way. It can't come soon enough.

Fyi - Deadlight embargo is up in about 9 hours. I'll have some thoughts on it by then in this thread.

So do i.
My review is there, waiting to be uploaded.

PS: i strongly suggest NOT to look at the video posted above... don't spoil yourself a kickass part of the game!

Also Giantbomb QL of Deadlight in 4.5 hours.

18:00 CET/09:00 AM PST.

Also @ Noogy

Do not be allarmed if in your week of release you will not get as many European reviews/previews/videos/pieces on your game because that is GamesCom week and EVERYONE is doing that, that week.
I know that sucks but just wanted to give you a heads up.

I can't even check out the game because of it, until the week after.

Thanks for the notice, Dutch Slayer. I'll do my best to get review codes as fast as possible to hopefully give everyone time before the embargo.

yeah, me too ;) (j/k)

i will buy the game anyway, the only reason i would want a review code is to play it earlier.

Will proudly (AND shamefully!) jump into this line of "Please Dust Please! Ooo! Ooo!" Begging, lol.

I'd give it just as passionate a break-down as I'm currently giving Gravity Rush in it's associated threads, lol. The fact I'll be able to play these 2 games within close proximity of each other is great.

I made a comparision btwn Grav Rush and Valis today... makes me think that making a comparision between Valis and Dust is actually much more obvious though, haha. I'd love to see Some old Wolfteam / Technos games get the kinda graphic love applied to them, that we're seeing with Dust.

... and now I'm going to stop thinking about how cool that'd be, because the mental images look too cool XD

im surprised there is no OT for Deadlight yet. anyone know who's doing it?

gaf is slippin.

Someone will probably be inspired when the reviews starts hitting in an hour. I really can't wait to hear what other people think of it, I've been getting some very different opinions from different people the last few days.

If you read one sentence about Deadlight before paying 1,200 points for it, let it be this one:

The game is good and it's well worth playing, but it's also VERY short and very easy - we're talking 2-3 hours for a first playthrough and maybe just over another hour after that to max your GS.

If you buy it knowing that, you'll enjoy it, but don't buy it if you want a lengthy game.

Short is no problem ( Journey was short and awesome ), but the combo 'short' and 'easy'....mmmm don't like to sound of that tbh :/

2 hours? Not even close, c'mon.

Thoughts on Deadlight

So I finished Deadlight in about five hours, game clock says one hour and 57 minutes, so I guess that must be actual ingame without counting restarts, dying and so on.

Important things to say:

- its complete linear, it's a sidescroller not a Metroidvania, so don't go in expecting anything else
- It's short
- Level design is terrible
- I don't think it's a good game

Overall, it's a below average experience. I would not recommend buying it, unless you really really want to.

The overall gameplay experience is decent for the first hour, but the puzzles never become clever, everything is a constant rehash of ideas and the actual controls of Randal are spotty at best.

Most of the puzzles revolve around the same elements of hanging, climbing or jumping off stuff. Every now and then the game challenges the player and asks for a wall jump, but those are few and far between.

Most of the time, you are trying to outrun the enemy, and avoid conflict, but the game will hand out guns and ammunition at a fairly regular interval, taking away that feeling of being scared of more then one enemy, something that the game gets right every now and then (as well as the chase sequences, which work better then I expected, but still suffer from the Uncharted syndrome of being boring the second time if you screw them up).

But overall, you never feel in danger, and the enemies become insignificant rather then obstacles, which annoys me because it takes away the fear of them. And the way you interact with them are either "taunt them to get them over here" or "death by axe/gun", which is fairly limiting and makes for a dull gameplay experience in the end.

Which is probably my biggest issue with the game - it becomes boring after an hour. It plays its hand way to early, and shows all its features and never iterates on them or takes it to another and more challenging level. Oh and the story and voice acting is terrible.

Other then that, there are some technical stuff that annoyed me. The game overall feels like a unpolished beta version. There's a weird color banding issue, making it look really weird in spots around the level, and I got this lovely bug saying my harddrive was gone and my profile could not be updated:

ogLOel.jpg

Animations are a mess, there's clipping, enemies suddenly not following you, friendly AI disappearing into thin air and collision detectin that is pretty subpar. Visuals are also pretty disappointing, with almost non existent lighting, bland environments and just overall unimpressive presentation, which is odd considering UE3 us capable of some neat stuff, even in the context of XBLA.

Overall, I really can't recommend the game. Try the demo, and get a feel for it. I personally didn't get that much out of it, and I had to force myself through the last two-thirds of the game. The game has some neat ideas, and there are moments where everything clicks and it shines. But those last tens of seconds and are then drowned in bland and repetitive game experiences.

Our review is up if anyone wants more opinions. I agree with most of our reviewer, although he didn't seem to get some of the glitches I had during my playthrough. I got the same profile error bug throughout my playthrough but I have ZERO leaderboard score. Also had the game load once with a black image and a HUD.

Deadlight Review - SelectButton

Overall I enjoyed it. Check out the demo if you are unsure.

Edit: Forgot to add there are A LOT of trial and error parts. Some are thrown back to back and kind of frustrating.

Thoughts on Deadlight

While I love your honesty, I can't agree with anything you're saying here. I haven't completed the game yet (although I am very far into the game) and yes, the game plays all of its cards in the beginning of the game, but still I felt claustrophobic and even hunted at some points of the game. I think it's pretty solid and it tells a neat story about a survivor in the zombie apocalypse. It's no Telltale's The Walking Dead, storywise, but it's great nonetheless. I love the soundtrack btw. There isn't that much music in the game, but the songs that are in the game are amazing.

Wow Vinter, that killed my Deadlight boner. The game showed great in trailers. So short and seemingly buggy?

Does that profile bug fix itself or are you just screwed?

I've seen that screen twice so far, but I could just continue playing and it saved just fine. It doesn't break the game or anything.

Yeah, I found the platforming pretty solid and even though I was basically doing the same thing for the whole game, the variations in locales kept it interesting.

It's just the stuff around the gameplay that doesn't work. Voice acting is terrible, you've got multiple parts voiced by the same people, at one point an entire cut-scene is just one actor doing two parts and talking to himself, and seeming to forget from line to line who he's meant to be. Aside from the graphics there's just a real budget feel to it, like the numerous little glitches and technical issues it has, which don't affect the gameplay much but do sour the experience.

EDIT: Yeah, that error screen doesn't seem to affect anything, although the game did fail to load my save once. I had to exit and go back in and it was fine. Still pretty poor though.

Pretty much. I adjusted my expectations last week but it seems it might not even be worth a download after reading that review.

Oh well, here's hoping Dust at least delivers.

I would urge you to try out the demo. It's apperantly a game you either like or not. I talked to Rlan yesterday and he's in the same camp as me, but others here don't agree.

So I would really recommend just giving the demo a go, and see what you end up feeling. I just hope the demo has some substance to it, so people can make a fair judgement.
