Rumor: Apple to announce new iPhone and iPad mini on September 12th

(US) Carriers aren't willing to be a dumb data pipe. They don't want to lose that text messaging profit for one.

If they don't want to be a dumb message pipe they better get rid of their shared messaging plans because that is exactly what they are encouraging since it only requires one phone to have a plan.

How is Passbook like Google Now?

How is Passbook like Google Now?

I was thinking of the flight example where Google Now will know your flight details and passbook can be configured with your flight tickets. Google Now has more features out the box with weather, traffic info etc but it'll be interesting to see what third party developers achieve with the passbook framework. There are already iOS apps that deliver push notifications for weather alerts and I'm looking forward to one of them making a passbook version, if possible (passbook includes geo based alerts so a weather passbook app could update and send a notification everytime you leave home, for example)

The iPad is not competing with phones. It'd be awkward as hell to use it like one. But if I'm 90% wifi on an iPod touch with Google Voice, iMessage, Facetime etc. and just need it occasionally and have the ability to go somewhere else as I please it puts carriers at a huge disadvantage.

I think Apple wants people who want a data package to buy the iPhone, and it's not just "the carriers" that are that reason. If it was then Apple wouldn't put less RAM in the iPod touch and wouldn't have a better camera in the iPhone. To me, the two devices are meant to serve two distinctly different customers and Apple isn't interested in putting 3G/LTE in the iPod touch to serve whatever small number of consumers that would want it. They (Apple, carriers notwithstanding) want to try and push those customers towards an iPhone.

Meh... This isn't Google Now.

You've never taken a device to a Apple store I take it. They are extremely good about replacing parts on Apple products, often times for free or if not very cheap, regardless if they are under warranty or if it was the users fault. They have damn good customer service.

My fiancee dropped her iPhone 4 that she never had apple care on over a year after owning it and it broke one of the volume buttons. She set up a apple store appointment and they right then and there gave her a new iPhone 4 for free.
I wish that were true. My iPhone 4 stopped making phone calls properly. People can call me and I can hear them, but they can't hear me. Skype, Voice Memos, and other things work fine... it's just phone calls where people can't hear me. Since this happened out of the blue and it's not my fault, I thought I could get a replacement... but no, I'm out of warranty so it will cost me $150. Apple Store employees wouldn't budge on that. So I'm stuck with a broken phone until the new iPhone releases as I'm not paying $150 to fix something that I didn't do.

Anyways, looking forward to the new iPhone. I have no use in the iPad Mini, just bought the new iPad recently anyways.

That seems like a pretty big issue to live with. It sounds like a software problem. Have you tried nuclear blasting the OS and starting from scratch?

When it gets to this point then YMMV. Apple isn't a charity, you should have purchased AppleCare.

I did a factory reset and everything, still have the issue. Guy at the Apple Store apparently ran a diagnostic and found it was not a software issue, though couldn't tell me what kind of hardware issue it was. And I've been using my mom's cellphone to make calls since she has her work cell she uses. I don't make many calls so it's not super important to get this fixed, but it's definitely a big inconvenience.

I understand that I'm not covered under warranty. It's just annoying to have to deal with a random issue like this when my phone is in great condition otherwise, I took good care of it. I would have thought it would last fine for two years before I upgraded. Now, if I dropped it or something, totally my fault. But this happened out of nowhere and I didn't do anything so that's why it's annoying. But I guess there is nothing I can do but wait for the new iPhone.

I hate to be a buzzkill because I think the iPad and iPhone are nice devices though where is the news on the next Mac mini and iMac. It would be nice to get a few tidbits on those every once so often amongst the sea of iNews.

Sadly for those of us with penises, they're not as kind about replacement devices out of warranty. I asked if they would fix my iPhone 4 5 months out of warranty for a failing home button and they told me there was nothing they could do.

I'm not expecting much at all from the iPhone 5. I haven't been 'impressed' with the platform for a long while now. Hopefully Apple proves me wrong.

I wouldn't bet on it for a few more years. Technology is simply moving too slowly for a sea change to occur.

Generally the time to get excited about desktop/laptop refreshes from Apple are when reports of the supply chain getting low surface. And unlike iDevice rumors that usually happens when updates are extremely close.

After starting with a white video iPod from back in the day to then having a black iPod touch and black iPad, I think I'm going back to my roots with the white iPod touch 5th gen.

It's all relative to sales and interest. The Mac is a niche as far as Apple products, and Mac desktops are a niche within a niche.

how soon are they getting the tactile feedback touch screens? I'll probably get the new one since my phone is overdue for an upgrade, but this is the one tech that was supposed to be here by now and we've yet to see it on any major device.

Man, I was hyped as hell for an iPad mini but if there's a chance in hell they'll release an updated iPod touch with the guts of a 4s or even an iPhone 5, I'll definitely take that instead.

I'd love an iPad mini, but my Touch is my lifeline. I use it as an entertainment center, game console, I'm listening to podcasts all the time, etc. there hasn't been a waking moment in two years where it isn't less than 20 feet away. For god's sake, I put it in a ziplock bag and take it in the shower to chill out and listen to podcasts and play games.

The iPod touch just fits into my on-the-go lifestyle where I'm in almost constant wifi perfectly. I sure do hope they introduce a powerful new model. Not being able to play walking dead is killing me.

I think I'll hold off on the Nexus 7 until I see this new iPad. If its at a comparable price point I may get it. Also very interested in seeing the new iPhone, kind of want to switch over from Android.

Looks like I'll be throwing my 4S on eBay on August 22nd for a 10 day listing then.

Can't wait to see what's new! Being iPhone-less for nearly a month is going to suck though.

AllthingsD confirms

Apple hasn’t yet officially announced the fall event at which it is expected to debut the next iteration of the iPhone, but it’s definitely planning one.

iMore was first to report that the company has scheduled a special event for Wednesday, September 12, and now we’ve confirmed it as well. Sources tell AllThingsD that Apple is currently planning an event for that week. And while we haven’t yet confirmed its focus, history suggests it will indeed be the new iPhone. One thing’s for certain, though: Apple is ramping up for a big fall product cycle. And to see that, you need only look at the the recent spike in the company’s prepayment for inventory components.

With the bigger (well, taller) screen, I wonder how screwed up all of the Apps we already have are going to be out of the gate. Moreover, I wonder how many of the devs will bother to update them or support both screen resolutions.

Still don't get the point of 7" tablets. They have no appeal to me, but I guess other people feel differently.

Date is pretty much confirmed. I'm still not sure if the iPad Mini will be announced, cause neither Verge or AllThingsD talk about it - I hope it'll be there.

man I really need to prepare my iphone for sale.

Did not expect it to come this early, really thought it was going to be late October again.
Awesome though because iOS6 is coming sooner than also?

It'd make no sense for iMore's source to give them the right day but be wrong about iPad mini. And AllThingsD tags iPad mini in their story.

iPhone assembled from parts, best look we have of the iPhone yet from the WSJ Thread:

My GF her dad has a job selling mobile phone accessories to big retailers. He just received some new information regarding accessories for the iPhone 5. Apparently the photo's used looked almost identical to the iPhone in these leaked photo's. Could be they just used some mockup but he seems to be fairly confident this is the final design.

Now it's really official.

So, you guys with more experience. If I don't manage to snag an iPad mini or g5 iPod touch right as they go for sale, how long am I screwed until I'll likely be able to find one?

Apple has basically mastered the supply chain. iPad 3's launch was far bigger in sales than iPad 2 or iPad 1 yet there was plenty on shelves to go around. You shouldn't have to worry too much I'd imagine.

3 weeks maybe? The shipping estimates sort of slowly inflate as stock dwindles and then they level back out as demand gets less overwhelming and they are able to catch back up.

I am on the 3gs, now imagine my misery

Did you get yours close to release? I had to prove to people who bad my 3 years old 3GS is. It takes roughly a full minute to load Facebook and another 30-45 seconds after that to load a page... then about 45 seconds after that to be able to STUTTER scroll. I feel like I'm on Android 1.0 with my phone with how janky and stuttery the shit is.

In short, the thought of getting the next Iphone (let's be honest, it's probably not going to be called iPhone 5) gets my manhood quite aroused. I can not WAIT for a new phone. Jesus christ.

So essentially buying a subbed iPhone...
Having second thoughts. I already have a dock, speakers and other stuff that would be screwed if this has the smaller pin
Well the time to decide is now. You'll get a lot less once Apple reveals the next one, especially if there is some new feature that everybody has to have and makes the old phone seem obsolete
how much would an unlocked version cost?
starts at $650 in the USA...
