Rumor: Apple to announce new iPhone and iPad mini on September 12th

I'm in the same boat and it's definately the best time for max value but I don't know that I can
handle being iPhoneless for two months. I will probably just take the monetary hit.

I still have my 3GS. It's actually sitting in a drawer (got it the day it was released), but since I only got the 4S in January I didn't bother to sell it. The back is scuffed up and has a crack by the port. My 4S is perfect though. But, the 3GS doesn't use micro-sim so not sure if mine would work with it.

Hmm :)

I'm seriously in for the iPad Mini if it gets announced, even though I have an iPhone 4 and iPad 2:

It'll be the wonderful size for me even though I got big hands.

Hopefully it'll be sharp enough so I can read magazines without zooming but this won't be the case.

^ someone said that photo is a normal iPad earlier.

This fall is going to be an insane quarter for them if half of these rumors are true. All Things D is reporting that Apple's prepayment for components is up $1.15 billion (12% of sales) leading into th quarter. That's the highest it's ever been and previous spikes have lead to record sales.

He's known for always being right I think.

Seriously though. Expect Bloomberg/WSJ/NYT this week.

WSJ already confirmed iMore's date via AllThingsD.

Seems like all these guys knew of the date and since as iMore let it out of the bag they all jumped.

Ah yes, I just realized that. iMore is amassing quite the reputation for inside information (assuming they're right again). Weird since they seemed to come out of nowhere in recent years. I remember watching their YouTube videos when they were just a low budget podcast/how-to.

man if the iPad Mini works well with one hand and has nice battery life (will it? I dont expect Kindles month of use, but like 10 hours?), I'd really consider replacing my Kindle with it.

I get probably 7-9 hours out of my Nexus7 with decent use. I could easily see an iPad mini getting to 10+. Charges pretty quickly, too.

I was thinking the same thing. They have really have had a inside track into what is going on at Apple lately despite coming out of nowhere as a fan site not to long ago. I guess they got lucky and got in contact with someone over at Apple.

9to5Mac came out of being a pure fansite into being pretty spot on with rumors too.

Hell Apple in general has been very leaky lately. They have been unable to keep anything secret since that iPhone 4 leak back in 2010. I can't think of anything after that they have been able to keep under wraps.

I assume leakers are paid huge money to provide photos. Or, enough to make it worth the risk for the Foxconn employees.

The rumored specs for the iPad mini indicate that it's going to be a lot bigger than the kindle. And everybody knows only devices with 3.5" screens can be operated with one hand

I used to be rather excited about the prospect of updating my iphone 4 with a new model.

Now I'm not so sure... I don't know why but I suppose I can't really think of that many benefits that I really need from a new phone.
My contract is running out later in the year though so I should be able to pick one up on a new contract fairly cheap.

I'll wait and see what the specs/features end up being before I decide. I know my wife is going to want one regardless though...

I've visited their forums a couple times and they have this particular person who has contacts within Apple. The guys posts every now and then. I follow him on Twitter, too.

How in the world was the iPad kept under wraps? (it wasn't leaked, right?)

The front panel has been leaked and it's been said by many to have the A5 and the updated screen size of the next iPhone. Anything other than that is still up in the air.

show me front panel please.

if the system si not as long as a iphone 5 i will be happy

You called?

Apple Inc. (AAPL) is preparing to introduce the next version of the iPhone on Sept. 12 in what will be a design overhaul of its top-selling product, according to two people with knowledge of the company’s plans.

DAY ZERO

My iPhone power button is only working half the time. I think liquid's gotten underneath or something. Hence, I need this badly.

Really want to get an iPad mini for my mom.
Almost bought her a Nexus 7 but iMessage and FaceTime are just easier for her to use.

iphone 5 for me, ipad mini for GF. I let her use my ipad for the last 4 weeks and she likes it but says it's too big. The mini will be perfect for her

Other than a supposedly leaked front-piece for the Touch, is there any reason to suspect it's existence?

All I hear I iPhone 5 this, IPad mini that, but other than this one little bit simply nothing about an iPod touch refresh.

Look, the current iPad looks awesome and I'm sure they are great, but I need something that will always be with me in my pocket. As cool as an 8 inch mini would be, that cuts into portability.

I'd love an iPhone, but don't want the contract and don't really need the "phone" part. The iPod touch is like the perfect device for me, and I'd truly hate to see it die here, even if it rises from the ashes as a sleek and sexy iPad mini.
Don't get me wrong, I'm extremely excited to pick up an iPad mini if the Touch isn't refreshed. I just don't want the added delicacy that the extra screen space provides.

I'm pretty sure one of the rumours was the ipod touch getting the same update. Not completely the same but bigger screen and all the cpu/gpu stuff.

Not really. There's a good chance Apple could kill it completely. I'm trying to stay positive about it.

Yep. If Apple can hit a similar price point as the current touch with the mini then they might not keep it around as it will be the new contractless iPhone.

Well, if the 4g is the last hurrah of my beloved Touch, all I can say is that I hope like hell that Otterbox's iPad mini cases are as great quality as their Touch cases.

I did my research and bought an Otterbox Defender case before I even had my iPod and it has served me in good stead ever since.

I treat my iPod as my most valued possession, but even with all that care I've dropped it a time or three.

The prospect of a device twice this big and, I'm assuming, twice as delicate is a bit frightening.

Really interested to see what Apple does with the CPU for this. It would be hard to believe that they would do the A5 again like they did with the iPad. Actually, completely believable. Just potentially unfortunate.

But it doesn't matter for me I guess, because I plan on upgrading ~every year from now on.

No doubt it will be A5X. It doesn't make sense to already replace it after introducing it in March. They'll follow pattern and introduce a new chipset with each iPad in the spring and then re-using it for the iPhone in the fall.

I am expecting you'll see a lineup like this this fall:
iPad on A5X
iPhone on A5X
iPad mini on A5
iPod touch on A5

and then next year:
iPad on A6
iPhone on A6
iPad mini on A5X
iPod touch on A5X.

References to iPod 5,1 were found in strings within iOS6 beta.

A 5th gen iPod touch is coming.

And I'm with you on the portability thing. After getting a MacBook Pro, it's replaced my iPad (mainly in productivity and so forth). I really need something more portable now, espeically since I refuse to pay a data plan for an iPhone. The 5th gen iPod touch, particularly with a slightly larger screen at 4 inches will be a great portable email, gaming, camera device.

Wow, a reference in iOS 6. Nice! Thanks for telling me this, I hadn't heard this.

Well, that's quite comforting :)

I'll say one thing, though. I'm sure not going for an 8gb device this time.

The current A5X will not be used in the next iPhone or in the iPad mini. You can bet on that.

To the folks suggesting the iPad mini would replace the iPod touch...

I *seriously* doubt it, for two main reasons.

1. Once you make the iPhone, you've pretty much made the iPod touch. Remove the phone features, slightly different casing, done.

2. The size and price point of theiPod touch are attractive to purchase for kids. Slightly more than a DS, but the games are FAR cheaper and they can't lose them.

Exactly. They're two different products, aimed at two different demographics. The iPod may not be as profitable as it use to be, but Apple owns probably more than 80% of the PMP market. And if Apple secedes the Touch, then I can see Samsung getting pretty aggressive with their Galaxy Player line, and I don't see Apple letting them do that.
