Ha ha ha yep you can run straight into New Londo's and get one iirc.
maneaters ai can "break" and they'll never land or get in range for you to attack. i've never beat this boss because this happens every time i fight them. there is a timer that you must take advantage of to deal a good amount of damage to the first monster. if that monster never lands then you're stuck fighting two of them who are at full health. those two may not decide to land. the area is also awkwardly designed where you can get slapped and glide against pillars and then shoot off the ledge.
it's unpleasant and doesn't so much test your ability to fight the boss as it does test your ability to either cheese them or get lucky.
no matter how you proceed through the tunnels, you can not fight nito without taking damage because of the drop into his pit. that's garbage, mate.
the new londo ghosts are pure trial and error. you pretty much have to memorize all of their locations and pulls to make it through that area. that's not fair in the sense of exploration. once you know how to deal with the area, yeah, you're only going to die from your own mistakes. that still doesn't change the fact that you're pretty much guaranteed to die the first time you go through that area because the whole place is cheap. tomb of giants has this same problem. what are your options here for your first time through? get lucky with a lantern drop before? get that headlamp bug? maybe a spell? dumb stuff.
tomb of giants problem isn't even that it's dark, it's that you've got these big skeletons hiding in corners, waiting to kick you off the ledge. you can't see the ledge and you can barely see the enemies. that doesn't stop the game from having you slide down a ramp right next to ~2 of them who will promptly attempt to boot you off.
you'll die by your own means in dark souls once you've memorized it. until you've got the layouts figured out, cheap shit will happen (dragon bridge)
I don't know what that means, he tricked a dude and got killed?
He dressed up as a NPC in the game and stood at the spot, the NPC would stand. Invading players ignored him because of that.
I couldn't find the original video, where the one that originally did it, did it way better.
EDIT: Ha, found it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Esk2nuLGKzY it's the ultimate troll
I alway start with sorcerer now....8 resistance....even if I switch to faith later the early game is is more fun with soul arrows....plus only wasting one extra point in int gives you teh ability to morph into the chameleon object of the level.....always worth a few laughs if you get invaded at atime you don't want to be.....better than wasting three points in resistance and nver using them fgor anything. Definitely try the magic character and use crystal homing soul mass and the tin crystalization catalyst....put on power within buff and see what happens to the enemy.....poof! Overkill would be to hold a sanctus, and whittle yourself down to the low health using dung pie and then stopte drain at red tearstone activation....tripple POOF!....ok overkill would be to have a phantom assist with the trident:What about magic builds? I assume it doesn't really matter which starting character you have?
I definitely do want to go back to the game after Platinuming it try out some magic like Great Soul Arrow, Great Heavy Soul Arrow, Soul Spear, and Homing Soulmass as they're badass![]()

it strikes gold at 6:00 and again at around 9:00. Gets really hilarious from 12:30 onwards.

Is Crystal Homing different from regular Homing Soulmass? The Tin Crystalization Catalyst, I have that in my Pyro build but I can't remember where I got it from. I did all the quests for Logan, maybe him?

That was hilarious. Classic Youtube joke comments as well "oh cool he can do that now?" hahaha. He dressed up as a NPC in the game and stood at the spot, the NPC would stand. Invading players ignored him because of that.

OP, this won't make much sense until you're familiar with the game, but trust us: there's a lot of EVERYTHING to this game that just isn't accessible/fathomable on the first play through. We're just messing around here, but make sure you play the game how you want to =)
As a beginner you shouldn't worry about them now, backstab is useful at some point when you're experienced with rolling and dodging enemy attacks, it takes courage and can get you killed if not done properly.
Ripostes are pure fancy, even for skilled players is something that does not work out every time.
All you need is the basic stuff: rolling, hit at the right time, memorize enemies' animations, etc.
Gravy. I'm more than happy to add things to the "don't need to worry about it for now" list.
Also, one thing that still lingers in my mind after all this time is the music during character creation. So good.
Ripostes are a pain in the ass, but backstabs are super easy and effective. So much so that noobs are sometimes discouraged from using them as they develop bad habits that will leave them boned against enemies that can't be backstabbed.Fixed.
Seriously, the amount of stuff in this game... It's as if you're all talking about 10 different titles. It's very daunting, to say the least.
Anyway, I'll be picking it up in about 3 hours on my work break and hopefully I can start tonight. I have feelings of both great anticipation/excitement and dread, which is more or less how I felt the last time I purchased the game. I'm in a different headspace now, though, as I don't have a handful of fresh and addictive MP games at my fingertips, etc.
Also, I think I've decided on a general approach to the game:
- Pyromancer > Knight build
- Drake Sword
- Come at me, Soulsbro
A wild question appears: ripostes and backstabs. How important are they and how difficult are they to pull off? I really like the idea of them, but they sound risky as fuck.
Bar none that piece is one of my favorite armor designs in any RPG. I'd wear that in real life 24/7 if I had access to it.I have a friend who normally hates medieval fantasy and hard games, but he's finding himself drawn toward Dark Souls just because of all the mundane-yet-wonderful gear.

If you find yourself still having trouble with the Drake Sword, I highly recommend picking up a Halberd. Its range is godlike, and the damage isn't too shabby either.
Just got it. 40AUD. Feels good, man. I can hear back-of-the-box quote/warning laughing at me. I am not prepared.
I'm still unsure of which character class to select. I'm just going to decide on the spot, methinks.
Thanks again to all contributers. I'm sure I'll be in the OT a lot.
About 1/3 of the way through the game, my humanity was always 1 or 0. It stressed me out that I could not regain human form and be able to summon others players to help with bosses.
(summoning is so helpful btw, especially for early bosses.)
I ended up doing speed runs thru the sewers to gain random humanity drops from the large rats. Got my humanity count to about 30. Helped take the stress off when I wanted to summon another.
The dark wood grain ring was hugely helpful for my build too. Fast rolling to dodge and counter saved my ass more than a few times.
Haha, so sorry. I will elaborate. The Dark Wood Grain Ring is perhaps one of the most broken pieces of equipment in the game. You can get it byWearing said ring turns all of your dodges and backsteps into ridiculously fast flips and cartwheels regardless of how much your armor weighs.joining the Forest Hunters covenant in Darkroot Garden and killing the ninja-looking merchant in the area that becomes accessible after you join.
Wearing said ring turns all of your dodges and backsteps into ridiculously fast flips and cartwheels regardless of how much your armor weighs.
On a side note, when it comes to armor design I don't think there is a single game around able to compete head to head with The Witcher 2 (and no, I'm not referring just to Geralt's usable armors).Bar none that piece is one of my favorite armor designs in any RPG. I'd wear that in real life 24/7 if I had access to it.
DWGR? Great. Thanks for mentioning yet another piece of equipment that I've not heard of before, guys.
THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I WANT TO HEAR.
SHIT.
wait, people come into your game and kill you? what is that shit. i kinda want to buy this since i got a 25$ gift card for a site that isnt selling any game i want. is there any kind of traditional grinding or is it pure skill based?
You collect souls which are then pumped into the various stats of your character, which dictates being able to use weapons / magic correctly, wear armor without penalties. Its actually a lot more than that, but this is the basics. Kill something, souls automatically go into your pool. Get to a bonfire to distribute points. Though if you die, you drop all souls you were carrying, get back to the point of death and recover what you loss. Die again and lose everything previously lost as its rewritten with a new death spot. These souls are also used as currency to purchase items / gear in the game.
This should give you a general idea of the stats you have to work with in game when you distribute the soul points into your character.

Info about the bonfires which is an important part of the game as its the checkpoints / camp menu to level up from among other things.

I take it your an OZ there mick? my trip down under was a blast...nice and warm in Canada's winter months....I even wore my roots/beaver t-shirt ...gotta root root root for the home team!!
Sure am, dude. Glad to hear that you enjoyed our country! We're in the dead of winter right now - and it is quite the wintry winter. Perfect weather for having your soul crushed by a video game, if you ask me.
And yeah, I'm tending to agree with the whole laissez-faire approach the more I think about it. I don't want to overwhelm myself with what shit I "should" get and whatnot. I think I just might keep the wikidot at hand and wing it. The game may never even click with me; who knows?
1. start game as pyromancer (with key)
2. use wiki guide
3. explore
4. ???????
5. souls
My friend honestly if you want to enjoy the game, play it the way you want to or how you would react in real life so to speak. You will have a much more enjoyable time that way than worrying about the million of different opinions that people have told you is the "best" way to play the game. As everyone is different in both skill level and play style. Find what works for you through experimentation. When things get tough we are all here ready with another million answers for you lol
I see the Demons / Dark Souls games as personality tests. Since its fascinating to watch everyone play differently, if left to their own devices.
Thanks, Parakeetman. Solid advice! This is my game, damn it! (/facetious knob; every bit of input has been appreciated!)
I know the type of character I want. I want him to have rad armour and rad swords and be rad at melee/countering/maneuvering. Rad. And correct me if I'm wrong, but going on the information in this thread, it seems that whichever character you choose in the beginning can ultimately be moulded into whatever you like, so I'm not too worried.
Basically yes. It just may take you longer since you will have to raise lower level skills higher to get it up to the requirements you may need.
For example in Demons Souls I played a rogue type of character, not too much strength, but since I enjoyed using a halberd and wearing medium armor on my legs / arms I pumped it up a bit and raised my stamina a lot so that not only could I attack a good number of times, Id be able to run a lot too.
There are endless possibilities really and thats whats so great about the game.
The only thing the game will "force" you into is one of the starting classes, from there its a piece of clay that you mold to your liking. Just be sure once again to read up the info on each of the stats you can raise so you know exactly what to throw points into ahead of time. Will save the trouble of trial and error. Then again you can pretty much keep going and just raise everything if you really wanted to / had time so not like you will ever hit a brick wall.
Though seriously one sound piece of advice is dont run around all over the place like a maniac. Trust me you will regret it in one form or another lol
Cheers. Sounds muy bueno. Yeah, I'm not gonna lie; when you guys started throwing around those 3 letter abbreviations for 'dexterity' and whatnot, I nearly spasmed into the fetal position. This game is like nothing I've ever played before, which is what makes it oh, so enticing, but oh, so daunting at the same time.
I will give it a good crack, though.
There is only one part of the game which I would say was unfair, and that was. Just seemed ridiculous to me and incredibly frustrating. At times it took longer to reload and get to the boss than actually survive during the fight.Bed of Chaos

More or less. There are some favored starting classes for certain character builds, but that's just to min/max and wring out a few extra stat points. Bear in mind that it is possible to sort of build yourself into a corner if you dump too many points into certain stats. It doesn't mean needing to restart the game since there are always ways to get through whatever encounter is giving you trouble, but starting a new character can actually be a fun solution because you'll breeze through previously visited areas and discover new things along the way.
To give you some idea of how extreme this can be, I learned to complete in an afternoon what took me well over a week of playing my first time through. Even with a fresh character, you keep all the knowledge, which makes a much bigger difference than stats.
Ya that's the only thing in the game that really frustrated me because of how unfair it was.
I look forward to replaying this game on Steam eventually.
Funny since Ive never built myself into a corner / had the need to redo my character. Its not like most people are going to reach the max lv of 792 anyways haha. Though if what you mean is will take you longer to get where you want to go the more you level up, then yes that can happen.
Haha, not to worry. Pretty soon you'll be spittin' 3 letter abbreviations like a pro. You'll have forgotten what class you picked to begin with, and you'll be laughing at a ghost of your old self, getting killed by careless mistakes.Cheers. Sounds muy bueno.
