Guild Wars 2 Launch Date announced: August 28th, 2012

I did HUGE amounts of trolling with my Thief yesterday.
Dual Daggers + Shortbow.
Kept pulling people off of walls with my Scorpion Wire, used Poison Blast + Cluster Shot for Area Weakness on large groups. Tons of teleporting and stealthing around. Jumped into big groups, picking off one or two people, then stealthing/teleporting out.
I went an entire 30 minutes without dying or being downed and I got tons of kills.
Also put up a few arrow carts and held two bridges against a huge zerg with a much smaller group.

Awesome times,seriously.

This makes Thief sound so awesome.

But it was the last class I tried out during BWE3. I felt their damage was horrible compared to everyone else's and were way too squishy - in PvE. At around level 6 I quit trying, refusing to endure the pain of playing the class with the hope that it gets better.

Do they just shine more in PvP?

Everywhere I go I read that Thieves are "weak, squishy and do no damage".

I..I just don't understand :(

I'm guessing a lot of people are trying to just shadow step to a target and trying to take him down with burst damage. Or trying to sneak around in the short amount of stealth. Thief is more about jumping in and out and trickery. Play it with the mindset of trying to confuse and stay out of reach of the target and it can be a lot of fun and very dangerous.

How you said here, I'm guessing a LOT of people didn't play this way.

With PVE I think you just have to play it with a lot more moving around than the other classes would. Plus the utility skills and traits make a huge difference in theif, so it could just be an inbalance at early stages without these.

No, Klyka just sounds like a very good thief.

I really don't want to say that or think like that.
I'm pretty sure that I had HUGE amounts of luck yesterday which made up for my lack in skill. I do feel I have a good grasp of the class, but calling myself a "very good Thief" is way out of my league.

Thief has been fun and feels fine to me, for PvE, sPvP, and WvWvW. Maybe I just haven't noticed because I haven't played any other class past level 3. I always play a rogue type class though, and the thief is a ton of fun, so I'm sticking with it. If Anet decides the thief needs a buff, I'll feel a bit stronger. If not, oh well I feel fine already.

The fact that thieves teleport all over the place and are just so crazy level of tricky makes them the best implementation of a "rogue" type character in any MMO IMO. The fact that they also seem to get their own unique dodge animation that also looks like a teleport (or at least my human female does) is pretty awesome as well. Makes you feel badass if you're playing well.

Oh, I'm using the phrase in a relational sense. Honestly the most important thing about GW2, as far as I can tell, is really clicking with a specific profession and knowing what mentality works best when using it. People who try to force an identity or play style onto a profession are going to have a hard time when faced with its inherent weaknesses.

A tactic I tried out yesterday which worked really well in WvWvW:

See a group of multiple enemies (like 5-10 or so) standing close-ish together.
Use your fifth shortbow skill (forgot the name) to teleport right into the middle of them, blinding them all. Immediately switch to Dual Daggers and do a Cloak & Dagger, stealthing yourself. Pick a target in their confusion ( A fucking Thief just jumped on them and disappeared immediately) and backstab him. Now, I by then had enough initiative (thanks traits!) to do a Death Blossom which made a few guys bleed and then I just used my heal to stealth away.

I managed to have 3 tightly clumped groups (using combos for AoE boons) spread out and get overrun by us because I disrupted them like that.

I would agree, easily the best thing about the class.

The Charr has this also, but the Asura does not. =/ The Asura does a cool acrobatic flip, but no momentary stealth/teleport effect on it like some other races have.

"You know how to fight six men, we can teach you how to engage six hundred.
You know how to disappear, we can teach you to become truly invisible.
"

Loving the thief talk, my fourth character is likely to be a Sylvari Thief. Really looking forward to giving her a try now.

I know choosing a World is supposed to be a serious decision and you shouldn't switch servers whenever yours is losing in WvWvW, but wouldn't it be a good idea to let everyone change World free of charge during 24 hours every, say, 3 or 6 months? It'd be good if you took the wrong decision when playing for the first time, or if your friends picked a different server.

I'm pretty sure the video covered a wide variety of zones. The big city at the end looks to be Divinity’s Reach.

IDK, it definitely seemed circular like DR. But it seemed like there was a central area with a huge stone slab in the center or something. I don't think it's divinity's reach. I couldn't tell you what it could be though. Seems odd to throw in another large city though.

So I'm reading info on reserving a name here:
http://www.arena.net/blog/reserving-your-character-name-for-guild-wars-2

And it says if you play GW1 you can use your name from there and they will be building the reserved name list a few weeks before launch. Does anyone if that window is closed or not? I just wonder if I can download GW1 now and make a name and have it reserved.

The deadline was July 31.

My thoughts on the Thief class

The mobility isn't the issue with me - I went from saying "dodge is useless" in BWE1 to making PvE look like a dance act in BWE3.

But there was an asuran dynamic event with a Glob of goo boss. Got there just as it started, and struggled to dish damage and felt that it was sometimes half of what other classes I had played were pumping out. Then, that's when it happened, I got silver for the event. That was the first time I ever got that on a non-pvp event I had been at since the start of. Just felt like a slap in the face and I decided no mas.

Maybe it was an early design for Divinity's Reach that they rejected but still felt like including in the game. Throw in a bunch of baddies, a few bosses - call it a home.

Yeah, that circular style and the stone at the center didn't seem familiar, i didn't see something like that in my tours in Divinity Reach. Maybe is Ebonhawke? As they showed the gates before that shot and the article mentions it.

We're still deciding on the servers. We will let you know soon, which will most likely be Monday or early next week. Sorry for the delay guys.

Take your time.
You guys should wait until the week of the 20th for best choice.

I don't think they even released all the server names yet.

On Thief:

First off, thanks for those that spell the darn thing correctly. I'm a spelling nazi, so seeing people spell rogue as rouge really guts me.

Third, I know I have fallen victim to playing the thief as if I have played rogue classes in any other MMO, which has made me dislike the class.

After reading some here, and on other forums, I see and know now that I have played it entirely incorrect.

Given that I know this now.....I'm not sure I want to play a Thief at all, as I love how rogues are in most games.

Would really like to see some good thief play in WvW and higher level PvE. I don't want to see sPvP, as the environment is controlled in spacing.

My thoughts on the Thief class
Glad to find another Thief player :) Your play style is similar to mine also.

I love infiltrator's arrow and shadow step combo and scorpion wire is also a must for me (also dual daggers).
I haven't been using Blinding powder much yet (third utility is my swap-utility).
How is your build otherwise? I tend to go for bleed damage for my two favorite weapon skills: Cluster bomb and death blossom.

I just had a thought about that big city in that new video...

Seems the consensus is that it's related to the Ebonhawk.

Can anyone explain the thief to me? I played one on the first BWE but it seems like I was too stupid to play properly. This would be the class I'm most interested in but it just didn't click with me. I never really had enough initiativ to really be doing awesome stuff with the thief's abilities.

I really want to give it another try come release, so a few pointers or good videos that explain the mechanics would be greatly appreciated...

WOW! I honestly thought it would take someone quite a bit longer to catch it lol. Yes, it was done on purpose. :)

It's a pet peeve of mine when people do that. Anytime I see 'First,' I go into List Mode and get annoyed if the list is missing steps.

I'm not saying you shouldn't t try with the Thief some more to see if you click with it, but don't be disappointed if you don't. It's really hard to know what profession is going to speak to you and which won't. For example: I hate pets in MMOs. Yet I'm planning to make one of every pet class in this game. Just worked out that way.

Everywhere I go I read that Thieves are "weak, squishy and do no damage".

I..I just don't understand :(

in my experience (mostly sPvP), their melee damage output just doesn't compensate for their squishiness - you don't stand a chance against Guardians and Necromancer, Elementalists & Warriors can one-shot you, melee Rangers are extremely tough. Condition damage simply wreaks this profession. And they don't really shine with group utility either.

I got this werid feeling on stress test that necro was very underpowered.

hm, how so? Their number of viable builds was limited in BWE3 (pretty much down to just condition damage), but I was rather successful as a Necro in the couple of tournaments I participated in. I can only imagine that they are quite strong in PvE as well, with plenty of minions to distract mobs. However, WvWvW might not be the best place for them.

A tactic I tried out yesterday which worked really well in WvWvW:

nah, the absolute best way to start a team fight is to shadowstep in, use Dagger Storm, pray that they don't interrupt you with a stun or knockback, then use stealth and run away. That's the one thing I will miss about the Thief, the Mesmer elite skills just aren't the same.

A video about the downed state. I know there are some people that still don't like it, but the more I see it with sPvP, the more I like it. Be sure to read the text in the description, or checked the linked blog article. Then watch some of Super Squad's or Team Paradigm's matches from over BWE3 if you want to see more.

As for the Thief, when a friend told me that he wanted to try Mesmer because he liked illusion magic; the feeling of misdirecting and confusing opponents while you prepare the killing blow, I told him to play Thief. The comparison to Batman is really apt. Makes me want to play some more Arkham Asylum.

My Thief has 23k HP and like 2250 armor.
Believe me when I say, I am not getting one shot by fucking warriors trying their hundred blades crap or some Ele ging pew pew on me.
