COMICS! August l OT l So what's new with comics?

My idea of having a great digital comic book library will all my stuff is completely being destroyed by the reality of file sizes vs storage space. An 8GB nexus 7 with 5.9GB usable space is a fantasy. Even 10GB of actual storage space won't be enough. Just my Irredeemable run of 37 comics and a Skullkicker vol 2 trade from comixology takes 700MB of space.

You can always re-download titles you've bought. Not as good as having them all there, certainly, but still.

Or get a tablet with removable storage.

Orchid #7!

:O :O :O

I love this book so much!

:O

Seriously folks, if you enjoyed Kamandi or if you enjoy a good post apocalyptic yarn with mutant animals, caste systems, bands of rebels, and crazy shaman there's no better book than Orchid.

i didn't know you could download comixology stuff to an sd card...hmmmmm that's an option i guess ( getting a tablet with an sd card slot that is)

I've been aware of this comic for a long time but it's the first time I hear anyone actually talking about it. Donald Duck books seem to have more buzz than this.

I'm curious if I would like it. Love Tom Morrello's RATM work but his solo music project left me completely indifferent.

I'm up to issue 32 or so of Irredeemable, i switched over to Incorruptible since it's starting to crossover for the last arc. Didn't know that ahead of time, i thought Incorruptible was the sequel but it's almost like a Jack of Fables tangent book. Read the first two issues, it was okay, but doesn't match up to Irredeemable, much like Fables got all of my attention due to the larger story elements.

I've read issue #1 of Orchid and couldn't make up my mind if i liked it enough to buy the trade, so i never did. It was alright and had an interesting world, could have went either way. I think the teenage prostitute thing was a bit too gloomy for me on a first impression basis.

I was hyping it up back around release too. It's just tough to keep up the momentum, especially in the face of new #1's from Marvel and DC every six months and the hype Comics GAF gets / generates from the Big Two.

I'm not a fan of the bands, but the comic is entertaining thus far and each issue comes with a download code for an MP3 that is musical accompaniment for the issue. So you get a cool comic and you can find out if Morello's music is going in a direction you enjoy.

Which had me wondering if the TPB will include a CD or download voucher for an album?

Anywho. . . gotta go work on a birthday present.

Choking down an episode of Avengers cartoon. God damn that shitty whiner rock intro is so awful. What were they thinking?! Round up every pussy that queefs out shitty music like this and throw them into the Sun. Earth does not need you!

Oh and hats off to Fritchman for running in on Nolan Batman on Word Balloon. If only I gave a shit about the books that guy wrote. :\

Can anyone recommend their favorite horror comics for me? I've been reading Creepy and Eerie and I like them a lot but I'm looking for something that's not a collection of short stories. Looking for something that really tries to be creepy and not just action with a horror motif. Graphic novels or on going series are both fine.

Id love to comment on the Gambit hate, but I havent read enough of the main universe Gambit to really know what Im talking about. Of course, I did read the Ultimate X-men paperbacks while growing up that featured Gambit and I didn't think they did that bad with him.

Also, does the new plotline in Scott Snyders Batman run start this month or next month?

New story arc starts in Batman #13 which comes out in October. DC is taking September off to do #0 issues.

thought #13s were coming out next month. i guess an extra month of internal hype for layman's detective comics.

Just finished Nextwave. Great little comic, though I'm still not sure if it really was beginner friendly. Those full-page battles near the end were amazing, and I was dying at the part where the Celestials kicked out Machine Man. God he's so ******. Oh, and the mindless ones have now ascended to one of my top Mooks.

I dunno, the Nexus 7 is probably a poor example since going forward most devices should have 32 GB minimum, but my Comixology collection's only taken up about 4.1 GB, and it includes:

- All 26 issues of Batman & Robin (2009-2011)
- 11 issues of Batman and Robin (2011+)
- 33 issues of Batman (1940-2011)
- 11 issues of Batman (2011+)
- 9 issues of Batman Beyond (2012+)
- All 3 issues of Battle for the Cowl
- All 4 issues of The Dark Knight Returns
- 14 issues of Detective Comics (1937-2011)
- 11 issues of Detective Comics (2011+)
- All 7 issues of Final Crisis
- 7 issues of Legends of the Dark Knight
- 11 issues of Nightwing (2011+)
- All 26 issues of Red Robin
- 22 issues of Robin
- 16 volumes and 4 issues of The Walking Dead
- 13 issues from various other series

So total, that's about 292 issues I've gotten around to downloading to my Nexus 7.

Worst case scenario, I just have to deal with a fridge situation like with the Wii. Which is bad, but not a killer, especially since I can just read any of my library at any time on my computer.

All digital future for me.

I wasn't sure after the first issue either. Overall I liked it, but I really struggled to get past that first introduction - "when the seas rose, genetic codes were smashed" just made me cringe because in what world does that make sense :(
That said, I do love a good apocalyptic story, so I'll give the first trade a go. I hadn't actually realised it was out already.

Looking at Amazon, the back cover says it has codes ("This collection includes an afterword and access codes for free music from Tom Morello")

I need help fellow gaffers: I've stopped reading comics in 2008 with Dark Reign and now I'm kinda nostalgic and ready to jump in once again.

So I ask: what quality stuff have I missed in these four years?
Any notable series\minis?

When I left I was reading and quite enjoying:
  • Doctor Sleepless
  • Joe the barbarian
  • Walking dead
  • Supergod
  • GL: Brightest day (Geoff Johns be praised)
  • Punisher MAX (Ennis stuff, fuck Fraction)

Is Rising Stars any good? Comixology is having a sale.

Buy It!
One of the finest works of Stracz, alongside with Midnight Nation.
The main concept is very similar to Silver Surfer: Requiem so if you've read it you already know the story.

Art quality sucks tough: they changed artist every, like, five issues.
And don't bother with the extra because they're not written by JMS and they're pretty bad.

I was in the same seat as you and got into comics again during late 2011. I'd start with picking up some DC comics (since most of them got rebooted and are around issue 10-11) and gave them a try. My favourite comic series at the moment is the new Batman and all I can say is that the first arc has been absolutely amazing. From the Marvel universe my favourite one has been Uncanny X-Force, you seem to enjoy dark comics so you might like this one. I don't really read too many comics outside of the DC/Marvel universe, so I am sorry that I don't have any suggestions outside of that.

Locke and Key is the real standout gem for creepy comics.

Also a short 4 issue series Ragemoor by Richard Corben might be worth looking into, i've only read the first issue and thought it was pretty good.

Have you read From Hell yet? Can't go wrong with the classics.

Instock trades is having a 48% off dark horse sale. O______O

Also, i really disliked Green Lantern Corps #11, maybe its the constant events but this book has no soul. It could also be Guy Gardner...and the Alpha Lanterns are boring in general even though they MIGHT have souls. Robosouls.

Nextwave is fantastic and yeah it may not be beginner friendly, heck I didn't like it when I was starting off reading comics, but now it's among my fav. series from Marvel. I would STRONGLY advise reading Warren Ellis' Thunderbolts run, one would find it hard to believe that the same author wrote those 2 books.

After a year I'm down to about 10 New 52 books, soon to be fewer.

Action Comics - this has been good, but aside from the LOSH issue and the fight with Brainiac - okay, and maybe the first issue too - it hasn't quite lived up to my high hopes. I'll stick with it through #16, curious who they bring on board after that.

Animal Man - this book has spun its wheel for a bit, feels like the family has been driving around the whole series now. But it's picked up steam lately, and when it's good, it's good.

Aquaman - love the epic tone they're nailing here. One of only 3 books I'm reading the month they come out (waiting for the $1 price drop on everything else). Also, this has done a great job of building Black Manta into a seriously intimidating villain.

Batman - Yes, it's bombastic, takes itself very, very seriously and Snyder seems to like the "long lost evil family member from out of nowhere" plot just a bit too much. But Capullo's art has been a revelation, and Snyder's kept the atmosphere going. The second day & date book on the list.

Batman Inc - psychedelic crazy as always.

Earth 2 - The 3rd day & date book for me. I thought this started out really strong, but the last issue just kinda felt like any old super team book. I guess we'll see where the last two issues go.

Justice League - okay, so it's popcorn. The creative team still keeps it cool enough to keep reading, and I like the way Johns is keeping the interpersonal interactions interesting.

Justice League Dark - this book has been fun as hell since Lemire took over. Love the way he writes Constantine. Solid use of the magical DC toybox and good character chemistry, plus I love the art. One of my top 2 at DC right now, with Swamp Thing.

Resurrection Man - this has been a really consistently good book. It's a shame it's going away so soon, there's more to tell here. But at least they tried.

Superman - this book kinda sucks. It could be any generic Superman series from the last 20 years if it weren't for the costume. Not sure I'll keep going with it past #12.

Swamp Thing - I thought this series started kind of slow, but Snyder's turning in a legendary run here. And I love the way they're keeping the dreamy art style consistent between artists, with the trippy floral panel arrangements.

Too bad for -

OMAC. That book was the shit.

Frankenstein. Started off fun, but got boring after a while & I moved on.

All Star Western. Almost great, especially to start. But going with a more cartoonish tone didn't work for me.

Legion of Superheroes. Maybe I'll get back into it, but the decision to make it a youth-oriented book (which is fair, that's how it started) made it not for me.

What do you think of Detective Comics? I really like the art, and the plot is a bit incomprehensible at times but still decent.

Alan Moore's Swamp Thing, if you haven't read it yet.
Not always creepy, but it has some nice horror stories.

I think I lost a lot of respect for Tom Morello after hearing his solo music. It was so cringingly bad and obvious, it made me think less of his intelligence. So reading the first issue of Orchid the idea that the writer was heavy handed kept jumping out at me and I couldn't enjoy it at all.

So for me it's not that it was buried by the big two, its just that I didn't like it :\

Did anyone read that Black Kiss 2 book this week? iFanboy gave it POTW so I gave it a try and yup, that's western tentacle rape. Neat, I guess! It was artfulloy executed at least. And I'm always saying the industry should treat sex with more respect...

Severed is probably the only comic I've read that gave me the creeped out goosebumps in the same way a good movie would. My favourite horror comic. There was also this neat indie book I read years ago by Abnett/Lanning with art by Peter Snejberg called The Lords of Misrule that I found really creepy.

I don't think it's that bad, and the art is really quite good. Just as good as Batman IMO.

Tony Daniel is an OK artist but a terrible, embarrassing writer. I like his new style quite a lot, it borrows a lot from Miller and Lee (while not approaching the heights of either) but his comics are just not good. Put him with an actual writer and I'd be interested.

I don't know about that. He's the main reason I could never 100% buy into Batman RIP, and it doesn't get more actual writing than Moz.

This is true, although I'd take a thousand Tony Daniel comics over one Ryan Benjamin... I think the style he's developed since that run is a lot stronger too, although he does rely far too much on the same facial poses and types. To me, he seems to be stuck in between Jim Lee and Guillem March but has the magic of neither.

What if he was drawing an X book brah? His writing reads like he learned it from an erotica creative writing class or the screenwriters thread where they all learn from a manual.

Think Tank was alright, I'll read more of it though. Thought it was pretty pretentious at times and didn't give the reader enough credit. I have no clue why it is a four dollar book though. AA was pretty good, even though they say it isn't the final arc, it will be. I don't know man just want to make comics now.

Thanks for the heads up, I just placed an irresponsibly large order. You've had good experiences with them I hope?

Other people have and keep them in high regard, i order regularly from DCBservice.com which is great and that's their trades site. I'm tempted to get a couple BPRD Omnibi, presuming i finally start reading volume 1.

Is anyone actually excited for any of DCs next wave of books? I was ready to crap on Beowulf back-up in Sword of Sorcery since i like 2.99 books, but "The poem is definitely my starting point. I mean, Beowulf was the original English-language superhero," Bedard explained. "But my Beowulf departs from the classic one most obviously in that it's set in a future where the great cities of the 21st Century are gone, replaced by feudal kingdoms that sprang up in a permanent nuclear winter. Old military installations have been converted into castles and fortresses."

Okay that DOES sound interesting.

Puzzled as to how the first sentence gets to the second. If he was drawing an X-Book I still don't get how I'd be exposed to his writing...

Sorry brah I forgot in grammar school that you start a new paragraph with a new idea and preface it with a thesis. Please forgive me because I bug you because I respect you.

Alright brahs, I need fifteen dollars to get to free shipping on instock trades. Got Books of magic 1,2 Northlanders 1 and DMZ 1. Marvel recommendations welcome, Willingham and Kirkman need not apply.

No, it wasn't a big deal, man. No bug. I was just confused. But yeah, TDX (what I'm assuming they'd call the book, because why not) is a nightmare scenario.

BPRD Plague of Frogs vol 1 omnibus, $18, 48% off?

Well I read this BRPD when I was bedridden, Hollow Earth I think it was, and didn't really enjoy it. Might have been because I was really sick though and (unrelated note) could not tell Psylocke from Fantomex in X Force.

Things that appeal to me at the moment: Jeff parker's Hulk, Darwyn Cooke novel adaptations, Underwater Wielder aand some others.

Thanks for the info, I've ordered from DCBS before so that eases my mind. Incidentally, I ordered just about every single Hellboy and BPRD trade (29 volumes in all), so you're in good company there.

Yeah I sub to it. From Image I check out anything that sounds remotely interesting, so I'm all good with them and DC.

Okay round two:

All of Warren Ellis' Thunderbolts in one Ultimate TPB. I saw it mentioned here before in regards to Nextwave. Definitely worth reading, and probably the only good things Warren Ellis has done at Marvel, though i still haven't gotten around to reading his Wolverine Not Dead Yet story.

Right up there with Kirkman's books ( couldn't resist).
