Guild Wars 2 Launch Date announced: August 28th, 2012

Damn, did Green Man Gaming run out of codes or something? They better get more soon!

They ran out of regular edition so I got Deluxe for $59.97 with the 25% off code, should have waited but don't know how long it will take them to get more codes and if the deals will be the same when they get more codes....

I definitely wouldnt do that with someone I didnt 'know' Seems like a good way to get ripped off

That's the entire reason they didn't include a secure trade system along with going a long way in killing black market trading. There's a reason why they included a global market for trading.

Here's ANet's reasoning for not using a secure direct player trade system:

Hey guys,
The no face-to-face trade is a real decision and it’s primarily a question of trust (as many of you have noted). But it’s also a decision to protect players from scamming and protect the economy from black-markets. Let’s run through some quick examples.

1) Give something to my friend. – As several of you noted, target your friend, right click the item and select ‘mail-to…’. Done, this works in contact list, guild list, or in world anywhere without having to ‘meet’ them or ‘catch’ them.

2) Get a fair price for an item (anti-scam). – Because ALL trading goes through the trading post we can guarantee that highest bidder meets lowest seller and we can give every player the benefit of current market information.

3) Barter item-for-item. This is the grey area and also the most risky kind of trade because even with UI many items look alike in icon and many social engineering scams take place in this kind of system. It’s a risky trade environment which is why when you support it you have to have these multi-stage UI’s where everyone double-checks everything, and then eventually get’s lazy and stops double-checking and gets scammed anyways.

In the end we decided with super easy access to mail for trusted trades and trading post for untrusted trades that such a system wasn’t worth the risk, complication, and fragmenting the player market off of the trading post..

In testing we’ve found that mail is easier 90% of the time we’d want trade and the other 10% trading post is far safer and avoids drama and thing like random trade windows being thrown at you and lots of other unsavory hawking in game. Hope that all makes sense.

I thought there was a tab of the marketplace interface hat was specifically dedicated to trading gems for coins?

There is, you cannot under any circumstances trade gems for coins or coins for gems in any other part of the game except that very specifc UI. So there's no way to say hey Wallach let me buy some gems from you for a discounted price because Gems are only a part of the UI and aren't an item.

The way it works is kinda like the UI bit being a trusted middleman, I give the middleman my gems and you give the middleman your coin, but no one has any say in who said items go to, it all essentially goes into a pool of gems and coin and is given out to others when they ask for it. Works just like the GW1 material traders and such if you've used that.

So how are people going to pay out these gem bets that pop up every now and then? Can you mail gems?

hmmm, where do I stick this CD key GMG gave me?

I preordered a long time ago on gamestop.ca and they gave me a CD key that got me into the BWEs, but where do I put this new one? haha

How much do you hope that youll be able to play each time you fire it up? Like they accidently opened the servers or something >.<

I never actually try to login...I mainly open it to check to see if anything new was added to the options.

They did make a subtle change to the Norn theme on the title screen though....yes I have launched the game so many times I could tell a subtle change in the music. :-D

Wow that's a damn big update. I wonder how stable it is now compared to the stress test. Guess I'll have to boot it up with the old login and see if there are any spiffy new options.

Edit: Well darn. There doesn't seem to be any noticeable difference in the options and there isn't a secret event I could sneak into. I still enjoy hearing the music on the old login though so it wasn't a complete loss.

It's not that big actually, it was only 400mb. Most of the files simply overwrote the old versions and there was a small amount of new files. The amount of files you download is decieveing because while you think wow this is gonna be a huge update, in reality every file could be 10kb and the overall filesize is then quite small.

There's a whole host of other modifiers you can add to a shortcut with GW2. Here's a list of them.

I missed out on this until a few days ago and I can't wait to see what -perf looks like. I've been wanting a visible fps counter without yanking up the options menu. Hopefully it looks alright so I don't mind leaving it up while playing.

I have to stop watching Woodenpotatoes' jumping puzzle videos. I'm totally spoiling them for myself, but I need my GW2 fix....

Totally this :) On the other hand, I probably have already forgotten most of it when the game comes out, and I'm really worried I won't even find half of those things.

Also the videos are just too much fun to watch :<

found some rather interesting PvP guides for the Ranger (ignore that one) and Thief (from the Super Squad guy - with some useful infos for all players)

the Thief guide lists a number of different builds in the traits section, all of which revolve around absuing venoms and venom traits. Yet another reason to avoid this profession

Not to come off as cocky but the Thief was probably the least threatening profession I encountered in spvp as a Guardian. Maybe the profession is a little underpowered, i'm not sure.

I think one of the devs mentioned it was one of the three classes they were going to be working on the most in the time just before release (the other two being Mesmer and Necromancer) as they felt they weren't yet up to par.

Right but if one can abuse the venom traits...it's going to be tough.

It's not so much actual abuse (that is, it doesn't appear like unintentional interaction of anything) as it is a heavy focus on venoms because it was considered to be the only competitive build he could find for tournament sPVP. There were some other gimmicky builds floating around for Thieves in BWE3 from what I understand but for the most part it was considered a bit weak. Especially in regards to defense against conditions; that condition builds were becoming very popular in the last BWE probably did not help the overall perception of the class.

Is there a class that is more OP than the rest? Same goes for a class that could use some improvements to be on the same level as the rest of the cast. I like playing both extremes early on in games like this.

Well it's almost like the spirit weapons for the Guardian, they take no skill to use and are extremely powerful(especially traited). I find it interesting on the use of Thieves Guild since I've only ever seen one person use it. Everyone else just uses Dagger storm.

Probably the Warrior. They do insane damage, have high health, damage reduction and their unique profession skill is the easiest to use in the game with the highest returns.

In the 1v1 section of the Thief guide, he mentions a couple of powerful builds for other professions. Of course, much of this will change after release, but at least you can get a good idea of what is currently considered a strong build.

We won't know really until release build is out in the wild. If I had to wager about what was going to be at the top and the bottom based on the last BWE, I'd put money on the Elementalist being very strong in all aspects of the game, and the Mesmer being the one that struggles the most. In sPVP (small team instanced PvP) in particular I think it might be a while before Mesmer finds much of an established role that people might pass them over for another class.

This. My wife (when she was my fiancee) HATED the fact that I gamed. I told her I would give up my favorite hobbies if she gave up hers. For some reason, that worked, and it clicked for her.

When I was reading that, I parsed that as the deal actually coming through. You should have seen my horror face.

Fascinating. I already knew about the "no Trading Post bypassing" (which itself implies "no WTS/WTB spam" and "money sinks working as intended"), but the "fair pricing" and "anti-same-icon-scamming" are quite important as well and never thought of them.

It's quite sad to see how well they've thought it out, yet seeing people instantly assuming trade not being implemented due to oversight, laziness or any other inane reason.

Jira is a real life cron job lol

+10 geek points!

how to evade/dodge the hundred blades combo and eviscerate (binding dodge on mouse scroll is actually a pretty neat idea)

At 46s: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_G8J25cffw&feature=player_detailpage#t=46s

The Asura flurry animation is a midair combo? That's awesome. :D

My favorite part of that second video was when the Guardian was standing on a tree stump and the Warrior had no way to get to him or do anything.

I think what some people forget is that picking up two melee weapons to swap between for a high spike damage combo, means that you don't have a range weapon. I can't imagine not having a ranged weapon as my swap-to...especially in WvWvW.

Uh oh. You may feel the wrath of Klyka very shortly! Speaking of Klyka....did you (Klyka) record any footage of your thief play?

Huh? It's early, and I didn't get much sleep. Not sure what you mean.

Weird, it told me it was already registered to my account....

Maybe I just clicked something twice too fast, or maybe its having issues with my GameStop code....or maybe GMG magically already added it to my account with MAGIC.

MAGIC

I did the same thing, got it at gamestop originally and then canceled there and got on amazon. You can't put the GMG preorder code in unfortunately, you're stuck with gamestops. You'll get an actual serial key from GMG though at launch that you'll put in to play live.

Sadly I did not, I only thought of it when the stress test was already over :(
Also, there is no wrath. I am enjoying my Thief and getting my wins, so no hard feelings there :)

Ahh, that makes sense, all they sent so far was just the beta/head start key.

He meant that on first read, he thought your fiancee accepted your "deal" and decided to give up her favorite hobbies just to get you to quit gaming. Mutually assured destruction is a terrible thing.

Darn. Would love to have some insight as to how you play the class. As for wrath, I mean with dual daggers, kinda stab wrath. :)

Ahhhh. Thanks. Completely agree. I'm very happy things worked out haha. My wife rocks. We support each other in everything. Granted, she prefers seeing me on the mats in jiu jitsu over gaming, but still, she supports me either way. :)
