IIT: people generalizing.

People like different things. Deal with it and stop judging.

I like musical. I am not obsessed with them, I don't know artists names or the lyrics of the songs, but I do enjoy a good musical every once in a while.

And some people wonder why they are alone or have no friends. Open mind and patience are philosophies. Learn and apply them.

I just asked a question, didn't complain about anything and this shit comes up as always. But just so you know, people have the right to dislike things. People don't have to like everyone and spend their time with people who are the complete opposite of them.

Now you're about to think people like that are intolerant, but you'd be the one generalizing there. I don't like football and rock music yet I love having a drink with people who love those things. It's not about specific likes and dislikes, it's about a general mindset you share with other people.

I'm lunch's mortal enemy :(

Musicals are so over the top, I can't stand them.

How many of you are not interested in stuff like shopping (for clothes), musicals, karaoke and fashion? Just curious. If you're interested in any one of those things, you're out.

I think is not possible to not be interested in fashion in at least some level because everyone wears clothes one way or another. Fashion is omnipresent in our lives whether we like it or not, everything we wear went through a catwalk at some point, however, I'm not that knowledgeable about it, you know one or two famous designers here and there but I could not recognize any of their clothes.

You're in! I mentioned the lyrics thing because that's often the reason why people love singing and karaoke as well.

Also I've never met a gay guy who loves beer.

I freaking love beer, probably more than I should. My favorite alcoholic beverage is Scotch though. But beer all the way, even for lunch.

I'm trying to think of a musical that's not over the top and I can't, but really, why would you want a musical that's not over the top. It doesn't entirely count, but Across the Universe is pretty grounded, and has some great covers.

How can you not love those discolored eyebrows? So adorbs.

there are plenty of those.

i've met more of those across Europe and the US than those that prefer other sorts of alcohol.

Me for example. I can drink gallons of beer, not something that I'd do every weekend though. It goes without saying it must be real stuff, the watered down piss you have in the USA is mostly disgusting.

Musicals are so over the top, I can't stand them.

I have no interest in getting into the history of the American musical drama or comedy over a comment you didn't really mean anything by, but I will say that the art form is just as diverse and open to subtlety as the modern ballet, opera, or the spoken drama. Of course, I also find nothing wrong with the occasional mindless extravaganza. It's why Las Vegas was built.

Mainstream beer in the States is truly disgusting stuff that people only seem to drink for the purpose of getting drunk.

Oh I saw that one, it was ok but maybe is my Beatles weakness, it was a nice movie.

It's just really jarring when you are in the middle of an emotional or important moment and the characters break into singing, I know that is precisely why they do it, I get it, but for me it has the opposite effect, I lose the emotional impact. I guess I'm more a fan of subtlety.

Maybe because you add superfluous things like "you're out" to questions you're asking, as if you're trying to gauge out how shitty a person is based on what they like that you don't and trying to show us how much of a unique snowflake you are.

Yep. Speaking of Las Vegas and musicals, Evil Dead: The Musical opened here, and I'm so excited. I don't have the money for it, but I'll find a way to see it.

Good man. 8)

I can get that, but I'd chalk that up mostly to bad songwriting or directing. There are some musicals that handle dramatic moments (Spring Awakening's soundtrack is excellent) really well.

People don't have to like everyone and spend their time with people who are the complete opposite of them.

No, but you would probably appreciate these people more if you focused on similarities instead of differences. I question you referring to someone else as a "complete opposite", considering that we're all human and have more in common with each other than anything else. You don't have to voluntarily spend a meaningful amount of time or energy on people that you're not particularly interested in, but considering how the world is ordered we do have to spend a substantial amount of time with people we otherwise wouldn't choose to spend our time with. I'm sure you would enjoy these periods more if you followed said advice.

You have asked almost exactly the same question (or touched the same subject) several times (in this thread or previous gay threads).
People have the right to dislike things, agree. You don't have to like everyone, agree. You also can't expect to be liked by everyone.
Yet you are quick to jump to conclusions with people because they like certain things.
And I am not generalizing, I am going by your [previous and current] posts: "You like pop... OUT! You enjoy shopping for clothes... OUT (but books is totally OK)! You have some cliché traits... OUT!". Yeah, that doesn't say 'intolerance' at all (your word, not mine).

As an American, I can safely say: Imported European beer > pisswater that is "domestic" beer.

But hard liquor (with my poison of choice being Vodka) >>>>>>>>>>> beer.

You are so out, mister!

Are there are any other LGBT libertarians here? I have a homosexual crush on Ron Paul.

Since you legit like Ron Paul and think hes sexy...

This begs the question: do you guys think anyone is super good looking when conventional wisdom and everyone around you says you are crazy?

I adore Nate Diaz, mma fighter, but all my friends tell me he looks like a monkey.

So i guess I like dem monkeys.

You're in! I mentioned the lyrics thing because that's often the reason why people love singing and karaoke as well.

In what kind of alternate version of Belgium do you live?

I love beer. Not just pils, but all kinds of beer. I don't like wine however, so there's that... And as evidenced by the recent Gentse Feesten, the vast majority of gay people I know also like beer.

So I don't know where you're getting this idea that gays don't like beer.

As to complete the list:
- I don't like shopping.
- I loathe musicals.
- I need to be seriously shitfaced before you can convince me to karaoke. But I've done it twice in my life.
- I'm not following fashion, and I don't necessarily follow the latest trends, but I do have an opinion on clothes and a personal sense of style though. I have lots of clothes.
- I like pop music and I rarely notice lyrics at all, unless they're atrociously bad or exceptionally good. The music and melody of the lyrics are more important than the meaning of the words themselves.

I guess that last one is the obvious gay trait in me, therefore: IM OUT!

Musicals I've enjoyed:

Wizard of Oz
Chicago
Moulin Rouge
Muppets
Across the Universe
Sweeney Todd
Mary Poppins
Rent
...

I'm sure there are more, but I'm not a huge Broadway/musicals fan.

...
So I don't know where you're getting this idea that gays don't like beer.

Its no good. I think most of us have tried to point these things out to him on many occasions... I'm starting to think he likes feeling isolated :\

I'm trying to make new friends through Planetromeo and yes, I'm meeting people in real life but it's not really working out. Things start falling apart when I refuse to go to parties. I have no choice because I get extremely anxious at parties. All I really want to do is have a drink and talk. People must think I'm boring because that's all I want to do :/

I used to have a good friend who'd take me out and get me in contact with other people. I never made friends that way but it was fun just meeting new people and talk. I miss those times.

When you say "parties", what do you mean? Any occassion where there's a high concentration of people? Or certain events specifically?

So I came home to the smell of burning metal. Apparently my dad broke his computer. He says that it was probably my fault because I wasn't taking care of it (I only use it for school). I checked and he placed the fan against the side of a wall. Clearly it overheated.

Afterwards he had used my netbook and dropped it apparently. It fell appart in pieces and I put it back together but it's not really fitting entirely well. With this I got pissed and told him not to break my things. This sort of led to an argument of him telling me that I never do anything with my life and that I don't have any plans for the future. He went on about the fact I'm having a year off school just because I had problems in my first year in university is my fault, even though he threatened to kick me out if I didn't go to it. He also told me that going to learn art is as irresponsible as going to learning music professionally.

I currently am learning vocals and recently piano at my local music store. He literally shat on all of my dreams and kept on rambling about it. After 10 minutes of this shit I stormed to my room. He doesn't even know I'm gay and he'd probably kick me out the moment he finds out. This also happened the moment I came back from a shift where a bunch of my coworkers found it fun to make fun of my stutter (I have social anxiety and was forced on till by them).

I hate myself and everything going on in my life...

All of my friends are gone and I have no one to talk to, so I'm sorry if this is a bit off topic. I just need to vent a little.

This sucks. I can't offer much more than the token: "don't sweat it/gets better", but really it does. My coming out when I was 18 - wasn't too bad - my parents were divorced for 7 years or so by this time and my father was instantly accepting - my mother came around to full acceptance, shortly after. I've known people who've had it worse, almost to the point when it was discussed years later, it's really comical.

By the time you've lived an independent life, soaring into the mid the twenties, or later...where I'm at (31), you'll start to champion and spearhead your happiness. For no one else, but you. As best you can. I've had horrendous ups and downs, successes and failings - what doesn't kill you, truly makes you stronger.

Emerson said: "what lies before us and what lies behind us, are small matters compared to what lies within us."

Keep that chin up. I don't know you, but I'm rooting for you.

Topic wise:

I'd liked all different types thorough out the years....but my favorite is a smooth (with light amount of facial under chin stubble) linebacker type. Something about the fatter/chubby build is attractive ^_^

Is that because you don't like to (or can't) dance? Or is it because people talk less when they dance and you mainly like talking?

There's no reason, it's irrational, it just kicks in.

Do any Belgian gaffers want to have a drink or something? You'll find I'm very different from what you see here.

Ok, maybe I was wrong. You've mentioned two incredibly good movies (Across the Universe and Sweeny Todd.) Maybe I don't hate musicals, just most of them.

You must be a real riot at parti-

Oh.

I'm pretty sure there's more ways to meet people than going to dance clubs. I guess it depends if you're looking for a relationship or a friendship. If it's with friends, I'm almost never at dance clubs. If it's for a relationship, I have no idea because I don't know what things are like in your area.

I'm normally pretty liberal with a few notable conservative traits (love guns, love castle law, hate Kelo v. New London), but over the past decade I've slowly become a real pessimist about humanity's fate. Gay rights progress is nice and all, but the triple-threat of unsustainable energy/environment/finance practices will render those issues insignificant. My hope for the federal govt to act adequately is incredibly slim, so my focus has turned to personal and local efforts to mitigate the feds' failures.

Not interested in clubs (haven't been in over a decade), and I have the fashion sense that's like Aunt Jackie's on Roseanne (jeans, long-sleeve polos). Haven't listened to new music since about 2000. But I do like the occasional musical; when I moved back home, my mom celebrated big-time that she has someone to go with her to "the shows." We go to a few a year, and The Producers remains my favorite by far. I don't drink much (beer or hard liquor are fine), but my partner is a beer snob after his time stationed in Germany. :P

And football is back on TV! Waaaaaaaah!!! I might not go out clubbing, but I'm more than happy to watch a Saints game at a bar. We usually end-up dancing around the bar at some points during the game anyway. :D

Here is some musical musts:

Garbage (all time favorite band) - they just released their 5th album in May.
Imogen Heap/FrouFrou - great stuff, organic and ethereal.
Florence and the Machine - Big, theatrical and epically vivid.
The Gossip (Standing in the Way of Control --> current) - soulful, rump shaking and raw.
Ellie Goulding - electronic and catchy.

Other notable artists to check out:

Goldfrapp
Robyn
Alanis Morissette (Flavors of Entanglement is awesome)
Postal Service
Keane
Bloc Party
YeahYeahYeahs

I don't know...those are just some recommended listens, I loved music in the 90's, more than I have 2000 -> onward. I tend to like soothing, electronic rock/industrial trip hop stuff.....

I'd remove half of the artists you mentioned, but the others are great. Post Hopes and Fears Keane in particular is rather terrible.

Gaborn is a gay libertarian. Probably the most well known on Gaf.

Has he ever posted in a gay thread?

Evidently not, and after reading these responses, I don't blame him.

Oh wow. Ron Paul isn't a libertarian and I think you'll find most gay "libertarians" are simply republicans who support marriage equality or marijuana legalization if it applies to them.

You couldn't be further from the truth.
