Rumor: Apple to announce new iPhone and iPad mini on September 12th

The current A5X will not be used in the next iPhone or in the iPad mini. You can bet on that.

I agree with this, isn't the main difference between the A5 and the A5X the GPU? I don't see the point if the resolution is only going up by like 20% on the new iPhone.

Next years models. This year will be A5 I am assuming.

You said "this fall iPhone on A5X":) But it will not happen next year either.
The A5X is a pretty complex SoC (four 32 bit memory channel, etc.) and overkill for small devices with very high power consumption. By next year itt will be outdated for high-end devices (Cortex-A15 and PowerVR Rogue (Series 6) is around the corner). Apple needs a new SoC for the high-end devices soon.

Yeah, the GPU and the memory controller. They basically doubled both.
I wouldn't be surprised if the next iPhone will use an overlocked 32nm A5.

To the folks suggesting the iPad mini would replace the iPod touch...

I *seriously* doubt it, for two main reasons.

1. Once you make the iPhone, you've pretty much made the iPod touch. Remove the phone features, slightly different casing, done.

2. The size and price point of theiPod touch are attractive to purchase for kids. Slightly more than a DS, but the games are FAR cheaper and they can't lose them.

Only 1 matters because they can use the binned iPhone parts to increase yield (not to say that an iPad is mostly the same parts as well). The second is irrelevant as Kindle Fire and Nexus 7 are both the same price as the iPod Touch. I'm betting the iPad Mini costs $300, others think less. In either case the price discrepancy is about the same as the size discrepancy, not a whole lot but iPad has more mind-share.

So I've never been even remotely interesting in a mini iPad. I had a desktop iMac and the retina iPad more then fits my need.

Now I own a macbook air and do not need the iPad for half the reasons I used to use it. I would love a smaller cheaper tablet now, just for media and browsing so I can sell my current one and buy that.

Also can someone confirm, ATT unlocks devices in good standing (mine is perfect) and completed contracts or payed for termination. This I imagine would include early upgrade? If so I'm set. I would be able to sell my iPhone 4s White 32GB unlocked for about an equal amount that an early upgrade version of the 6th gen (The New iPhone I bet it's called) will cost.

So Apple's apps will work fine, and any scrolling app will be OK, but what about other things? like will games be stretched out or be letterboxed?

I still don't like the stretched look of the screen and new aspect ratio but may as well get used to it.
It'd be better with less bezel above and below the screen. Why does the home button need to be so big? Why does the camera need to be above the earpiece? There's no reason a 4-inch screen can't fit on the current 4S dimensions.

They're saving those changed for the 5s

home button is just the right size for a thumb, its perfect

There is reason to make it larger though. A larger battery for the larger screen and LTE.

thanks.

what exactly is buffed aluminum? is it like the back on an ipad 2?

also since the itouch 4 is a little shorter than the 4S, im hoping the itouch 5 is a little shorter than the iphone 5.

Yes, it will be like the back of the iPad. Much more scratch resistant that the stainless steel scratch magnet of the 4th gen iPod touch.

And scrolling app will only work fine in portrait but will still be 'broken' in landscape.

Yeah, I'm really curious how much work will have to go into updating the apps for the new aspect ration and res.

Apple products have amazing resale value. If your phone is still in perfect condition 300 is definitely way too low to sell your 4S. 400 MINIMUM, closer to 450-500. 450 would be an easy sell.
Yeah, I was able to sell my iPad 2 on Amazon for 299.99 in less than fifty minutes.

I'm tempted to return my new Samsung Galaxy III eat the 36 restocking fee (or complain how they were full of shit on he battery life claims) and wait for this. Then again I am happy with the Galaxy besides battery and bloatware and I have the new iPad so perhaps it's better to keep two different os systems around.

I bought a case for my 4th gen Ipod Touch. One day I took it off because I was sick of the bulky size and there were 3-4 scratches in the back even with the case on. I've been using it with the case off for about 6 months and the back looks like a warzone. I hope they never use whatever material on the ipod touch on any of their products.

Eight-Pin Dock Connector + iOS 6 / Bluetooth 4 Link Details? (Updated)

iLounge said:
As Apple’s next-generation iOS devices and software come closer to release, new details continue to flow in from our sources, and a previously reliable one has chimed in with two really interesting things we hadn’t heard before. Since the first directly conflicts with rumors that have made the rounds for months, we waited to publish it until we had additional confirmation, which we received this morning.

1. New 8-Pin Dock Connector. According to two sources, Apple’s new Dock Connector features only 8 pins, seemingly contradicting claims of “16-pin” and “19-pin” connectors. Although the original Dock Connector contained 30 pins, reports of 16- or 19-pin connectors seemed hard to square with the port’s small size and Apple’s actual need for additional pins beyond what USB/Micro-USB offer. No images or parts for the connector have leaked out, either. Both of our sources concur that there are eight pins in a line within the new Dock Connector, which may well receive a different name going forward.

It’s worth noting that Apple recently received a patent on what appeared to be a 16- or 19-pin Dock Connector. It’s possible that this is for the seemingly inevitable “old Dock Connector to new Dock Connector” adapter, specifically the female side that connects to and adapts the prior 30 pins, and obviously the other side will look entirely different.

One source claims that the new connector will feature other design innovations, potentially including the ability to be connected to docks and cables in either orientation (like MagSafe),* but the other source could not confirm this or additional changes we’ve heard about; consequently, we consider other changes “quite possible” but uncertain. Given the possibility of grumbling from users regarding accessory incompatibility, it’s safe to say that Apple will attempt to pitch the new connector as superior to its predecessor in a variety of ways, and the smaller size will only be one of them.

Update: A source chimes in to confirm and explain the second detail: the male connector has 8 pins on each side, while the female connector has only 8 pins on one side. This enables the iPhone/iPod/iPad (with female port) to connect to either side of a male cable or docking plug.

2. iOS 6 + Bluetooth 4 Link.
Our source also claimed that Apple is working on an as-yet-undisclosed iOS 6 feature that will act as a bridge between its Bluetooth 4-capable devices. The feature would enable, say, a future iPod nano to display iMessages received by an iPhone, record voice memos that could be shared via the iPhone, and even initiate phone calls through its own headphones. It could also conceivably let you make iPhone calls from your iPad (or possibly even recent Macs), assuming the iPhone was paired with the computer over Bluetooth. The core concept here might sound familiar to fans of HP’s ill-fated TouchPad, but our source claims that it’ll be more broadly and deeply executed by Apple.

The current iPod Nano doesn't support bluetooth and the latest rumors say it'll be even bigger and have a home button...

If Apple puts out a 32GB iPad mini, I'm all over it. Here's hoping they go with a variety of storage capacities rather than only a 8GB or 16GB.

I hope one of the smaller providers in Canada (Wind, Mobilicity, etc.) get this, but that's probably not going to happen :/

If so at least before December when my contract is up.

That really depends on Apple finally going pentaband with the iPhone 5.

The nano as a smart display makes the most sense. I'd be all over that. So much for that pebble smart watch.

My other prediction is that the new "nano" we've been seeing is like that teardrop iPhone design that was "leaked" last year...

For the first time it seems to me that Apple is confirming to industry standards rather than stubbornly forging their own path.

I don't like it one bit. Mucked around yesterdaywith a tablet similar to the proposed iPad mini and I just don't get the point. Ah well. We'll see how it goes.

I'm personally interested to see the iPad mini. I sold my iPad 3 because it felt too cumbersome for me. It sucked trying to lay down and read. Hopefully the price is reasonable.

And in regards to iPhone 5, the amount of info we seem to possess already seems crazy. Are there any exciting, rumored features to be psyched about?

Apple doesn't want to be a niche company anymore like they were for computer/desktops. They have far larger market share in the mobile computer field of smart phones/tablets and don't want to lose it. Thus the company will operate differently than it did with its Mac business.

Their iOS business is far larger and has far loftier of goals than OSX/Macs ever did, so they operate in a more mainstream manner in this.

4s was the end of an era

this is the new era of mediocrity and fugly designs

So the rumor says iPhone 5 releases on the 21st. Are there any rumors about when the iPad mini releases?

iLounge:
5. iPad mini + Cases. The iPad mini will apparently not be ready to ship at the same time as the new iPhone, and might* have its own debut event. Our source says that it could ship by November, which we noted would be really close to year’s end, during a month that typically doesn’t see new hardware releases from Apple; our source stood firm on the target date.

Very cool. I normally only plug in my iPhone after turning off the lights at night, so a symmetrical connector would save me some frustration.

I'm not sure how much utility I could get out of BT4 linking. It seems like this sets up Apple to bring Mac deeper into iOS (by making it a big remote control for the iPhone), while also giving them an easy in-road to a Google Glass competitor.

http://www.imore.com/apple-roll-new-dock-connector-out-across-ios-product-lineup

iMore has learned that Apple intends to update their entire lineup of iOS device products to support the new, miniaturized Dock connector, and to do it as early the rumored September 12 special event this fall. This would include the new iPhone 5, the the new iPod nano and iPod touch, the rumored 7-inch iPad mini, and an updated version of the current 9.7-inch iPad.

The information comes from the same sources that told iMore about the new, smaller Dock connector back in February, and about a mini Dock adapter to fit legacy accessories last month.

If they do roll out the new dock connector in the 3rd gen iPad, I'd imagine they would quietly tweak the internals to lower the heat and improve battery life. Good time to do a "silent update" and use the dock connector roll out as an opportunity.

Still think I'll stick with a iPad mini, though.

Biggest and best news is the smaller dock connector. It's old.

I wish Apple would forge ahead with a new headphone jack.

Haven't really been following iPhone 5 news, but looking forward to its unveiling. Is there anything crazy being rumoured as the 'one more thing' or is this just going to be the bigger screen/faster phone song and dance?

What does this all mean for the iPod Classic? Would it really be feasible for Apple to update the Classic with a new dock connector? Or should they discontinue it, in favor of a 128GB iPod Touch?

I love my iPad 3 and am in line to buy iPhone 5 but can anyone explain to me the reasoning behind iPad mini? Like is there a market if my humble myself does not want it?
