Guild Wars 2 Launch Date announced: August 28th, 2012

Can't decide between rolling an elementalist or a warrior... I have a feeling warriors will end up being one of the most popular classes, so that's causing me to lean towards elementalist.

Okay I announce that Retro is allowed to announce it.

Oh, for the love of...

We're rolling on Stormbluff Isle.

We spent a lot of time considering various servers and in the end we voted the list down to a top three. Out of those three, one has had a consistently low population throughout the BWEs that we felt will result in either a low pop at launch or a large alliance thinking they can have an entire server to themselves and moving in. Since Titan Alliance is keeping their server choice underwraps (for fear of "Groupies") we felt it was best to avoid a server that appeared very welcoming to them.

The other was relatively similar to Stormbluff in terms of the number of guilds planning to roll there, but it also had some potentially large groups rolling there, along with being an alternative server for a very large web community.

In the end, the votes tipped heavily in favor for Stormbluff. We'll make relevant changes to the community thread and GAFGuild.com as soon as Ferny and/or Jira are back.

Hope I didn't spoil things by having to announce it for them because of Hawkian

More like it was tipped slightly in favor of Stormbluff. It was basically even imo.

Engineer will definitely be my first class. But I've been looking at some videos of the Mesmer and Thief, and those are really appealing right now. Confusion with clones, or teleporting/stealth sound like good fun.

A good rule of thumb for deciding which profession you're going to roll in GW2: Pick the class that looks coolest. Then be prepared to change your answer at least 17 times.

Things to look forward to when rolling on Stormbluff Isle:

+ Similar name to Thunder Bluff - This will likely be the spiritual home of the taurens.
+ Assumed lower population will mean reduced time spent split in overflow servers for PvE.
+ Likely non-existent or small WvW queues.

Things we'll have to watch out for when rolling on Stormbluff Isle:

- Canadian RP guilds: The most serious of all RPers.
- Population being too small a few months down the line once the initial rush dies down.

Good choice. I doubt any Alliances will roll there due to them probably not being able to get all of their peeps in. it seems like it has a decent amount of guilds on there, a pretty good pop, and didnt suck at WvW in the beta

Plus, it also has a decently cool name, but not so super cool/bad ass that everyone and their mother will want to roll on it

Kinda curious now, which server came out in second?

Hey, it could be worse; at one point the Unofficial RP server was suggested
by me
.

As for population, the server has a fairly healthy population if the number of guilds reporting are accurate. I don't see GW2 having quite the same level of falloff as sub-based MMOs just because people won't have to make the decision between two games.

Kinda curious now, which server came out in second?

Sorrow's Furnace. The Unofficial PVP/DAoC vets server and home to Reddit Overflow (eeeguh). Third place was good old Henge of Denravi. If for some reason Stormbluff becomes a non-issue, Sorrow's is the alternative.

Seems very small. Only 3 servers with fewer guilds reporting for it.

Depends on which list you check. GW2Guilds.org lists 9, the thread of guru lists 24. All told, allowing for doubles, we ended up with a total of 32 guilds. The other servers were 59 (Sorrows) and 12 (Henge). Those both seem too high and too low, respectively. Factor in the potential for a lot of PVPers and Reddit and Sorrows just seemed a little too likely to explode.

Where are you guys getting the server population info from? GW2Guilds.org?

GW2Guilds.org, the thread on Guru and a couple Google docs that are floating around. The information isn't THAT great, but it's better than picking one at random.

Stormbluff isle was apparently 4-2 in BWE3, so it seems like it has a decent population. And they did beat sorrow's furnace as well.

Seems like a very good spot if it can keep that ranking. Bad enough to avoid the huge alliances, but good enough to be decently organized and hopefully fight against similar above-average servers

BWE rankings were mentioned, but I don't think they were a huge factor beyond "Henge went 0-6 in both BWEs we have data for, that's going to scare people off." Sorrow's Furnace went 4-2 in the first BWE, which is the exact same score. They placed 7th overall. (Stormbluff was added in BWE2). BWE results obviously won't carry over into Live in all cases; Sea of Sorrows did well in BWE1, but Goonsquad was there. They've since moved to Maguuma.

Oh, that was more for people who were worried about the choice, and it possibly having a low server pop, which it didnt seem to have in BWE3.

I just worry about whether or not guilds are actually bothering to update their location on the Guru list at all. I don't think most will, especially not with the guy who made the thread putting gw2guilds.org at the top of the post now that the betas are over.

They're going to have to make it public somewhat to avoid collisions.

Yeah, I just mean that they're doing it on that website rather than Guru since it is now being advertised within the Guru list. We know the website's data is specifically for release server picks, but we don't know if the guilds on the Guru list are just from their BWE choice or updated for their release picks.

Some guilds/alliances have said they aren't telling anyone where they're going because they don't want "Groupies". That's Titan Alliance's actual words, if I remember correctly; "Groupies". They don't want a bunch of people rolling on their server, taking up their WvW spots.

Our thinking was that Stormbluff seemed to have enough guilds on it that a large alliance would find it unfavorable, but not so large that it was going to be an issue. Obviously most servers will fill up quickly (as they did in BWE3), but ArenaNet has tools to increase the cap as needed.

The key factors in making a choice were that the population wasn't too low, and that there weren't any alliances or large communities (reddit, 4chan, guru, etc.). We actually want other guilds on our server, that means it's healthy.

I would like to add that if the final server list comes out and Stormbluff is cut, or there's some issue that comes up with the server, we'll likely be rolling on Sorrow's Furnace. Just a heads up.

Yea, that really annoyed me when i heard Legacy and titan alliance talking about PUGs in WvW. I mean what the hell? Describing everyone that isnt in your alliance as a PUG just seems fucked up to me

I don't remember there being so many established guilds joining WoW at release like there are for this game. I can recall there were maybe a handful of well known guilds from other games (EQ) moving to WoW, but it's ridiculous how many guilds for GW2 already exist. Is this just because they're moving straight from GW to GW2?

It seems so weird that the game is going to release and everyone already knows what guild they're in. Is this a phenomenon unique to GW2?

something similar happened with TOR. some wow guilds established a presence in toR, but were still playing wow.

Not at all, lots of guild plan to roll with eachother when they transition to a new mmo. I saw it in Vanguard, Aion and Rift. One of my WoW guilds was an EQ guild that decided to re-form after several years of more or less playing apart.

It's a phenomenon unique to Guild Wars, and similar PvP centric MMOs, I think.

I will miss Henge of Denravi. It was a nice standby and I do enjoy being the underdog, like many others.

I think I've overestimated my free time...

Guild Wars 2: Headstart: Sat 25th Aug

Crap. But at least I have a month with these two before Borderlands 2 comes out.

We're rolling on Stormbluff Isle.

Good to finally have some resolution to that burning question. Someone might want to post an update on gafguild.com as well for good measure. I'm sure Ferny will update the community thread when he gets a chance.

Some guilds/alliances have said they aren't telling anyone where they're going because they don't want "Groupies". That's Titan Alliance's actual words, if I remember correctly; "Groupies". They don't want a bunch of people rolling on their server, taking up their WvW spots.

Team Legacy said a similar thing in the past, but at least they were pretty polite about it. They said (to paraphrase) "We know we have a lot of fans out there that want to play with us, but if we advertise our server in advance, the server is going to fill up, and people who are actually in the guild won't be able to join." I can respect that, especially since we encountered that ourselves in BWE3.

Except it's true....

Certainly there's a lot of truth to it. A large WvW alliance, especially one that proved quite successful during the last beta is going to draw a large crowd of people who want to be on the winning team. I can see that they want to avoid everyone rushing to be on their server and filling it up immediately. Still, they don't have to be dicks about it. Oh well, one more reason to be glad we aren't (hopefully) going to be on their server.

Except it's true....
Words cannot adequately facilitate the sheer amount of confusionism I am experiencing. I mean... this is a video game :|

Edit: at the word they chose to represent "people want easy". There's a difference between a groupie and the average joe wanting to be on a winning server.

poor darksouls, if it came out this week i would have gotten it. but i'd rather play gw2 since i beat DS for the 360 already. I can wait for a sale to replay it.

borderlands 2 will be a guild wars break for sure though. too good of a price to pass up.

i have mentioned this before but greatsword and dodging make this game feel like monster hunter the mmo
The primary reason I fell in love with GW2 is not because it was the sequel to one of my favorite MMOs, but because the change in mechanics they wrote articles about immediately made me think Monster Hunter. Most of the personal friends I'm playing with played Monster Hunter Tri with me for several hundred hours.

I forgot how much I disliked the Factions campaign. Having to run my Mesmer through it until I can buy the elite luxon armor. This would be so much easier if they had the armor for my Dervish. >|
