Fighting Games Weekly | August 6-12

The problem with Persona in the US is that the IP might as well not even exist. It's a well-made niche anime game that will get some traction, but it's never going to break out because it can't attract that casual players that SF/Marvel can to blow up the #s.

For a niche IP, Persona is pretty big. But yeah, I don't think anyone in their right mind really thinks it's gonna approach SF4/Mehvel levels, even if it has the potential to be the most successful ArcSys fighter in the states.

Mark my word it will fail. You can take that to the bank.

If your definition of "fail" is "doesn't have an active offline community a year from now," then I'm bookmarking your post now and setting a reminder on my calendar so I can call you out.

edit: I'll say "6 months after evo next year" instead to make it more fair.

Rare footage of Fuudo dropping his combo!

I'm going to the P4 24 hour launch party tomorrow at Gamecenter. My friend is getting the game as soon as he can, we're going to grind for a couple of hours then head over there. This is my first anime game (unless you count KoF), so I'm scared/excited.

Won't be able to pick up the game until Friday, but I'm really looking forward to P4A...especially since I recently finished P3P.

Mitsuru all day err'day.

Uryo was the sak player right?

Man, that full combo x2 with the stun in the middle was PERFECT. Dying on the last Sakura bop always crushes my soul, and it would have even moreso there.

i'm guessing 3rd update. and even then thats not guaranteed since a lot of companies are real privvy on that 40k per update from xbl

so LI Joe thinks Persona is going to stay at 2 months top. Fanatiq won't play P4A because he thinks nobody is going to play it and therefore no money.

They also both said other people in other community won't play and join the persona community.

Interesting to say the least

It already outsold all of your other fighting games in japan in I believe it was the last five years.
It is a fantastic game, and everything about it is well done.
Strange that it is only the american fgc that is so close minded and slavish to one game or two maybe,
If many american fgc players had their way it would be marvel anytime all of the time. (Because they can consistently win that one)

Fanatiq was just saying two days ago he would give a shot.

Dude's opinions don't matter. Hes only good at Mahvel and knows he'll make maximum profit by staying in that lane. Last person you should be talking to about the future of any fighting game, outside of Marvel I guess.

People aren't questioning whether it will be a sales success. They're questioning whether people are gonna rep it at offline events for a long time to come. If sales were directly proportional to offline community involvement, MK9 would be up there with SF4 and Marvel in terms of tournament popularity.

I think it has to do with the fact that its to anime, a majority of America considers anime a weird niche, especially when it pertains to fighters.

The reason Marvel is so popular in the US (besides people winning in it) is the fact that it does not look like a anime even though it plays like one, half of its cast are American comic characters that have years of history and people can relate to them in that way.

The same can be said for Capcom characters, people have known them for years and are comfortable with them.

Or because the games you're referring to are all "Anime-style", which immediately limits the audience for the game because of differences in cultural aesthetics.

As much flack as WoW got for its art style for being "cartoony", it gave the game mass cross-cultural appeal.

Not really. I would bet it that Persona makes Evo.

Isn't BBCS2 among the top 10 arcade fighting games in Japan ATM?
It's probably been up one of the top ten arcade fighters since the series came out back in the CT days. CS actually sold more than CT did on consoles if you go by the media create numbers so the arcade scene was surely at least stable if it didn't grow. It's probably lower on the totem pole since Extend.

Obviously it all relies on Marn not killing the scene!

P4A has very little chance of taking off in Europe due to TTT2 being a week afterwards, but hey, it's not a bad game. It's just that it being a good/bad game isn't important.

Given the sales in Japan, it absolutely deserves a slot, imo, as long as it just doesn't completely die off outside of Japan (and I think that's unlikely.)

Injustice is the "expected" game that might not actually make it to the lineup, I think. I could actually see SCV making a surprise appearance given it got 500 people this year.

People severely overestimate the effect that "pro player " opinions have on whether or not people pick up the games. I remember Justin and Yipes saying they would play Skullgirls, and i remember Flash Metroid and Mike Ross claiming SF X T was the best fightring game released in over 10 years.

yeah. Howd that work out?

Oh and dont forget Sanford Kelly claiming MVC3 was ass because women could win in that game, and Justin Wong hating MVC3 because Floe was using Sentinel and beating him consistantly.

It's more like if it's not a capcom game, I'm not playing. If a pro player actually stopped being a pussy and actually took one of these games seriously, they would show why some of these games are awesome.

Anime is a niche, but anything that isn't a capcom fighter is a niche period.

Whatever, if there's people out there that want to stick to one game, that's is fine, but to hate or write off a game is just stupid. I personally feel like they think it's "uncool" to play an anime style game because people will think they are anime loving otaku who fucks body pillows all day.

Oh and the epic vanilla Marvel sucks said by Justin lol

the Pro players usually don't play non-capcom games because the scene tends to be immensely smaller than a capcom scene, thus less competition and less money.

It's all about aesthetics and what people like. P4 could be the greatest fighter in history, but if people think the characters are ass / dumb, it'll fail.

The trick is to make characters people like / game that's appealing and then hook them with the quality gameplay.

I play competitive M:TG, which has events nationwide on a weekly basis. I don't invest time in the WoW TCG for exactly this reason- I don't have the time/resources to play a second game with less resources.

I really need to write a big thing up on how the FGC should be looking to partner with the TCG-based stores. They can really help each other, and the TCG market actually brings a good income stream to the table. (Xanadu hosts both games, as does Next Level.)

I also think some people like to be in the spotlight of winning. When Jwong/Ricky was playing T6 when it was out they were getting some wins here and there, but once they played anyone good they got put in the garbage, and they dropped the game once the average person was beating them.

Or the game needs to be flashy enough so people will pay attention to it, like "NORCAL VS SOCAL HYPE HYPE HYPE AH MY GAWD DAT HD COMBO NEOMAAAAAAAAAX," followed by, "Hey guys, this is an Honest Fighting Game™."

True, and to a point, unfortunate.

Personally, P4A has some of the best designed aesthetics and UI I've ever seen in a game, period.

Busted Mike Ross's balls about Skullgirls today. He said he was going to pass on it. I asked why. He said it was because of the art style, that it was too anime. I told him to stop being a bitch and at least try the demo. He wasn't even aware there was one. I told him there was, so it's no-risk for him to at least try it out, and that he'd really like the grappler the demo offers. He then replied with "well, I'll probably play it if a lot of people play it too."

I clapped my hand down on his shoulder and said "Dude, you're Mike Fucking Ross. People will play the game just because you do."

"That's... a good point."

"It is, and now your excuse is invalid. Play the damn demo already."

"Yeah, I'll give it a try!"

"Damn skippy you will. You're welcome in advance."
Poor Anime...

Didn't go anywhere even when Mike personally asked Mike(INCEPTION) either.

Same thing with Mortal Kombat. All those Capcom guys bailed out once they started getting blown up in pools.

If they were serious about money some of them would have gotten back into MK when it was announced as an MLG game. The weird one with this is Chris G, who is still pretty good at MK but doesn't enter the MLGs.
