3DS XL First Impressions/Previews

What surprises me the most is the sound quality with headphones. It's so much better than before. It is the most striking thing about the XL for me.

Really? I'm pretty disappointed with the overall sound quality of the XL, including via headphones. But I haven't tried surround mode with headphones yet, maybe that's more impressive. Will try it out soon.

I wish this was available in the US day 1

I tested Yoshi's Island and the ghosting is bad on the upper screen :(
It's not a great systemfor fast paced side scrolling 2d platformers.
Link's awekening looks really great.

I played more games and it seems the 3d effect quality keeps changing between games. Some seem to really benefit from the larger screen and some don't. It's weird.

Got mine today.

Am I the only one finding that the 3d effect is a downgrade ?

Every thing else is an upgrade but the IQ in 3d is way less attractive than before. You can't play with arms streched in a comfortable position and even close to the screen I lose the sweespot every time I press some buttons, it's very frustrating. Mutant Muddz looked much cooler on the old 3ds.

I've tried a lot of demo units and the one my collegue bought (blue looks awesome in real life) but I agree the 3D is worse on the XL. The sweet spot has a slanted banding effect that moves left and right when you move the unit even slightly, a very distracting effect. On the regular 3DS the sweet spot, which is just as narrow, is at least without this banding effect.

It is a shame, because I was really interested in the XL, but it just has too many drawbacks, so I'm sticking with my regular aqua 3DS.

That is interesting, I already find the sound of the 3DS to be quite good. Does the XL have more volume on the headphone output and is it free of the distortion that the speakers have?

Unless people are lying (or don't have a good eye for color) here, not all of them are.
You can definitely see it with mine. Once 3D goes off the top screen goes "warmer"

If this was supposed to be the choice for Nintendo once again they should've done both screen and actually also when 3D is on otherwise it's just a mess like with mine. Wish I had a good camera to show it off, maybe I can get my friend to loan his

You nailed the banding effect. It is the most disapointing thing since no review mention it and a lot of people keep saying the 3d is better ...
Even so I don't regret the upgrade. The increased built quality, ergonomy and size of the screen are really great. The most amazing thing is that I can finaly close my 3ds without a piece of clothe between the screens.

For the sound, I'm not an audiophile (my earphone are fisher eterna V1 ) but I noticed more bass and better clarity.
Maybe someone more qualified could back up my impression.

It could be a physical difference in the way your eyes perceive 3D. It's similar to the DLP effect where some people simply couldn't tolerate watching that type of TV because they could see a rainbow band across the sets that was invisible to the average person.

again, i thought it was established that the dots had to do with something along the lines of shipping/production? has anyone said they didn't see them upon first glance, but got them later?

Yo Irish mine definitely 100% has scratches on the screen which weren't present when the unit was brand new. No mistaking it whatsoever.
I'd take pics but have no macro lens :(

Makes sense....

But I'm really considering a cancellation of my order. The whole selling point of XL to me (aside from build improvements), is it should be the SAME 3D effect as before, just BIGGER.

How could Nintendo really enlarge the 3DS and not quality check that the 3D is equal/better? It should not be WORSE on a handheld iteration where 3D is a named part/selling point of the machine. I'd argue 3D being the biggest factor for my continued interest...23 retail games later.

The 3D has never been a problem for my eyes, and the sweet spot hasn't given me trouble in months. I really would like to hear from multiple owners: is the 3D effect better/worse than before.

I don't care about aliasing or jaggies. I want to know about the effect and it's innate hardware qualities : banding/sweet spot/depth/ghosting+double images...

Could be that my eyes aren't compatible with the XL, if other people don't notice any moving banding effect on the XL display with 3D enabled. Maybe the XL doubles as a diagnosis device for eye problems LOL.

EDIT: Just now I notice a similar but much wider banding effect when I look really closely or from really far away at the display of my 3DS. Maybe other people can notice the type of banding I mean when doing this. On the XL I get this banding at normal viewing distance and it is much closer together.

Envy. Really hope you enjoy it. :)

Any impressions on both screens' temp? Warm/Cool? Any visible yellow hue?

definitely warmer compared to 3ds. I could swear that it was colder before putting them side by side. the 3d is amazing in 3d classics though

best 160euro ever spent. Wish I had the craddle

We actually joked about this during the 3DS launch last year. Several people discovered minor vision problems that they didn't know that they had because of issues seeing the 3DS's type of 3D display.

What you and Me_Marcadet described reminded me a lot of the DLP issues. I owned two over the years and I never saw the rainbows but some of my friends who visited me did. I do see what you're talking about on the 3DS now by looking at it really close and really far away but it's still strange that you're seeing it so easily on the XL when we haven't read any complaints about it in technical reviews.

After some time with the machine and some rest for my eyes I returned to the demo of mutant muddz and things were better. The thing is the console is much bigger and the screen larger so if you move ever slightly you'll see double images and ghosting. You really need to play with steady arms for the 3d to be good.
There's still bad ghosting and double images on high contrast images.

The other thing who disappoints me is the ghosting on gba games. It's really bad. I'd rather play them on emulator on the psp go because the xl screen is a blurry mess. It's sad because the look of the games when nothing move is really great.
Nintendo really shouldn't have bothered with the 3d because it's says a lot when psp go screens from 3 years ago look so much better.

I always turn off the 3D so it's no issue for me. I'm really loving the XL. Which is strange because ever since Nintendo announced the 3DS I was sure I'd never buy one.

The "ghosting" on GBA games is intentional. They have to make it like that to emulate some effects properly. It has nothing to do with the screen.

Also, you should always play older games in 1:1 mode. Looks way better.

Like... completely? for ALL games?

Sorry to sound surprised at this, but i haven't actually played any 3DS games yet so i can't really imagine how it feels with or without 3D on but... aren't some games MADE for the 3D effect to visually amaze you in particular?

I never have the 3D on for any game. I don't enjoy enhanced jaggies and crosstalk, so I keep it off.

I wonder what kind of problems could cause effects like this.

Yes, it is strange, I wonder how many people see this as well, haven't heard about similar problems with the regular 3DS.

Nah, sure it's probably a nice gimmick for some games. But I don't really care for it. Plus I feel weird after a while of having it on. For me the Nintendo games, actual online system, big screen and the horsepower of the 3DS are the selling points. Not that the 3DS is a powerhouse, but Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart look fantastic for a handheld.

So there are more jaggies with 3D on confirmed then? Because of the added CPU/GPU power that is needed for the effect or what?

What do you mean by crosstalk?

Some games like Ocarina of Time 3D have 2x AA with the 3D turned off but most of the games I've played have no difference in terms of jaggies with the 3D on. Crosstalk is what happens when some object in the game is set in front of a dark background and you will see a double of that object. Something like this.

I always play in 1:1 and that's why the games look great when nothing move. Too bad about the emulator then, I knew something was up because super mario bros and super mario land doesn't blur so much. Could you elaborate about this please, I love those kind of technical facts.

One weird thing I noticed with the xl and RER is that I'd rather play with the 3d on whereas with the old one I found the anti aliasing of the 2d mode much more attractive.
The game really shines with a larger screen. I think the low resolution must be crushing a lot of details too.

It's a shame I lost my ds lite with my copy of pokemon black because I would love to try it on this device.

I would add that the d pad is really great. One of the best ever made with Vita's one. It's really a well built handheld.

Well, I find it more than a gimmick. I mean, it's real 3D. Real 3D games. An entire mainstream system, pushing 3D. It's just so cool to me. Enough that's have over 23 retail 3DS games, in just a year. I play with 3/4-full 3D. It was jarring at first, but I've gotten so used to it, that it's natural now. It's so natural, I can't wait to see 3D in future 3DS games. It's become such a neat attraction for the system. Captures my childlike imagination I used to have with gaming.its made games fresh, with a new perspective.

I respect your view..but try it sometime. Give it a week, gradually upping the slider and you won't look back when you've adjusted.

To be able to achieve transparencies, the GBA flickers the sprites on and off. The refresh rate on the 3DS screen is much higher than what Game Boy and GBA had, so to keep that effect they have to put some motion blur on the sprites.

It's the same thing with the Game Boy games on Virtual Console, but it's not as severe on them.

My XL froze yesterday playing OOT. Couldnt turn the machine off either, had to wait til the battery died many hours later to turn the machine back on.

...so worried about it now. :(

Did you try holding down the power button? That was the hardware reset function on the 3DS but I don't know if they kept it for the XL.

Pre-ordered my 3DS XL (blue, of course) last night at a local independent game store that routinely breaks street dates... so I'm hoping I get mine a couple days before the 19th. Fingers crossed!

damn, here's to hoping whatever pair of headphones i pick up at best buy are solid.

After going back and reading the last six or seven pages, I found one guy that clearly states he got scratches that weren't there when he bought it.

No pics, so it's hard to trust, and the majority of people don't mention scratches (unlike with the 3DS), so perhaps at the very least the problem is very minimal?

yeah, that's about what i've picked up, too! until...

dammit jo
well, sounds like ill be keeping the feet off my current 3DS cradle and taking precautions then, good to know ahead of time.

wait, it's not? damn, i was gonna grab a cradle too...then again if you go & get a battery pack or CPP these things don't work anymore, so there's that.

I have the red one on reserve, going to trade in my current 3DS on the day of release, doing a transfer right there in the store. The clerk already said they'd help on that.
