I want to give Dark Souls one last shot. Help me.

Oh! Oh! I was invaded! In the Darkroot Forest. He spent a good 2 minutes circle strafing me. I didn't even move. I was petrified. And then it began. A fight for the ages. Not really, though. He was horrid. I back-stabbed him twice with relative ease and cartwheeled triumphantly as his body slumped to the ground. A joyous occasion indeed. Well, until someone else invaded and obliterated me not 10 seconds later. 1 for 1 is pretty good, I say.

Ewww such a bad way to ruin the great PvP battles this game has to offer. Nothing worse than getting invaded by somebody who wont even swing their weapon unless they have manged to flip ring roll behind you - Normally those type of people get horribly combusted though.

Oh god. My hardrive got corrupted and I lost my NG+ save.

Well, time to start again! I just blitzed through Taurus in about an hour. It's amazing how much easier the game is second time around.

Ha. Are you slagging him or me off? I was flipping around, mind you, but I was swinging wholeheartedly; none of this galavanting around nonsense! I'm an ELITE KNIGHT!

I went out to dinner and all I could think of on the way home was: "I really want to farm some large titanite shards". 2 hours later and the game and I are best buds again. It speaks volumes that a game can punish you with such gusto and still manage to keep you coming back for a few more lashings. Pure and realized core mechanics at their best.
So true; nothing else like it in this regard.

Also lol @ B-Town. Makes it sound like some sort of hip place where all the scene kids hang out. What happened to you, B-Town? You used to be cool...

Haha. Hacking up scene kids. I am alright with this. Go for the fringe?

I dunno. I just went through there in, maybe 1/2 hours. But I suppose my armour having decent poison res helped me quite a bit.

Blight Town on the other hand was a pain in the arse. A brittle framerate, constantly falling and getting poison sniped from a distance by those little fuckers... Man, that place was a pain.

I meant in terms of atmosphere.

After finally figuring out the right way to start the game, I'm beginning to like it.

Until I get, "invaded."

What the fuck is this? Who thought this was a good idea? Is there a way to turn this shit off? I don't want other fucking people coming into my game trying to kill me. Aside from the fact that had I actually wanted to play a motherfucking multiplayer game I'd have popped one in the disc drive, isn't the goddamn single player hard enough without having to worry about hardcore veteran players who are bored coming into my game and kill me as well?

Of course I'm only assuming that's what's going on here, seeing as how FS didn't think this tiny little gimmick was worth explaining to the player.

I like Dark Souls. I want to play it. I don't want to fight Sir Gregory von Douchenburger while I'm still learning the many ropes to this game.

You should be able to play in offline mode. Not exactly sure where to find it, though. Try rummaging through the in-game options menu.

Worse comes to worst, I'm sure there's an option in the console's menu to disable internet connectivity.

There is a very simple solution: play offline.

Besides that, I thought there was some sort of level matching going on to prevent grossly overpowered players from coming to kill you?

I know that feel bro. I deliberately played offline (easier to do on Xbox), despite everyone in the OT telling me I was missing out. The game is hard enough without getting ganked.

That said, you can avoid being invaded by staying Hollow (don't use Humanity to Restore Humanity at Bonfires). You can only interact with the online features when you're Human.

You only get invaded while in human form. Just don't use humanity at bonfires to 'reverse hollowing' unless you're about to take on a boss. If you've finished the boss and you're still human but don't want to roll the dice, consider getting yourself killed in a convenient location next to a bonfire so you can grab your souls and continue on your way.

As for the reasons behind it, the Souls games are all about interaction between people who are anonymous to each other. As with MMOs, I think allowing people to be royal jerks just adds more depth to the range of possibe social interaction even if it isn't always fun for every player. If you want to do something about it, there's a covenant you can join that allows you to invade and take revenge on players who ruin others' days.

Make sure you also buy some indictments from the bishop on top of the Undead Parish so you can use them against anyone who invades you.

I believe so, but levels aren't the best matchmaking metric in Dark Souls. Knowledge, gear, and experience are just as important.

Just stay hollow (you can be summoned as a hollow, just can't summon others yourself) to avoid pvp. And if you get invaded and they're cartwheeling through the fucking Undead Burg with a giant sword and a mask, just dashboard out or something.

Back on release I would've been like deal with it but at this point every douche is just a box glitching ganker anyways.

There is. Doesn't mean much when a more experienced player (skill wise) comes to run train on a newbie.

That said this is a perfect time to learn co-op a well. Use humanity and get your body back to normal and roll with a friend. It gives you one more person to defend you when you are invaded and it makes the boss fights easier. Win win!

Make sure you also buy some indictments from the bishop on top of the Undead Parish so you can use them against anyone who invades you.
Just to be clear, you only need to buy one Indictment since the first big update happened. It can be used multiple times (but still stacks IIRC, so a bit confusing).

To those guys who can't be doing with invasions, there's not much else to say. I recommend at least playing online while in Hollow form, so you get the other advantages like seeing messages and helping other people out. As long as you're happy being by yourself within your own game, this should be a good compromise.

Hope that aspect clicks with you eventually, though... it takes the game to a whole new level of excitement and strategy once you get a feel for it.

Invasion are one of the most funniest thing in this game. Play offline you'll miss so much fun.

Ohhhhh. Yep. Totally knew that. Totally been facing bosses on my own because I have balls of titanite, not because I'm unaware of a basic mechanic of the game.

Got it.

Yep.

On me first playthrough I summoned 2 helpers in the depths just for kicks, then they both started running so I followed them... right into the Gaping Dragon fight. I hadn't even seen the boss yet, but they demolished him in a minute flat while I barely got a hit in.

I felt bad about that, so all other bosses were solitary affairs.

I'm more than fine with tackling everything on my own. As suffocatingly oppressive as this game can be, it's a big part of the charm. Having someone beside you - AI or HI - mitigates that a lot. I mean, I still have my reservations about the soul-farming exploit in Darkroot. Exploits and super powerful buddies just don't fit the tone of the game.

Any tips on armour and weapons in NG+ guys? my main stat is int (45)...undead burg is whooping my ass...ornsteins armour isnt doig much

just blast everything from range, NG+ means everything is going to hit you hard

with that Int the Moonlight Greatsword is your best bet

I'm not seeing the fun factor here as a newbie. It'd be like if they allowed other players to pop into your Zelda or Elder Scrolls game and fuck with you while you're getting your solo on. What's going to happen? Well naturally griefers and assholes are gonna have a field day trolling the general population.

I've been invaded a few times but the invaders apparently never managed to actually find me - I never saw them - until earlier today when some glowing black mad guy turned up.. i bolted back to the nearest bonfire and he backstabbed me just as i reached it, it was awesome :D

I agree. Having beaten Dark Souls, and being about half way through Demon's Souls, I don't see the appeal at all. Ever since I read the Demon's Souls manual years ago I've always played these games with the ethernet cable removed. Messages are kinda neat, but invasions just don't sound like a good thing to me.

Is there some aspect of it that I don't get, or is it just fun for the extra challenge?

Being invaded is such a thrilling experience!

I remember the time I was looking for my invader when suddenly a pot shot a soul arrow at me as it morphed into a person. So good :D

It´s the experience and the extra challange.
Knowing that you got invaded changes your game so much that it´s just a unique experience.
Also summoning other players and try to communicate with them through the emotes is nice aswell.

Played for an hour or two. Dropped off into the first zone after the starter dungeon. Ran into the skeletons and got my ass handed to me. Never went back to the game. I think the best I did was killing the three initial skellies by using parries and then running further into the graveyard to find three more skellies which killed me.

You went the wrong way actually.

Heading to the catacombs first is a bad idea for a veteran never mind somebody first starting out. Obviously you wouldn't know you were heading to the catacombs but yeah...Go the other way!!

Ha. Are you slagging him or me off? I was flipping around, mind you, but I was swinging wholeheartedly; none of this galavanting around nonsense! I'm an ELITE KNIGHT!

Not really slagging anyone off I just don't see the appeal in rolling around with Shiva's bodyguard ring on trying to back stab fish. Obviously you swung like an Elite Knight though so all is good in the world. For me the most skillful part of PvP is the art of parrying although that can be a problem if you fight somebody who is a bit laggy - Invaded a guy once in the Kiln who had an upgraded Dagger and he proceeded to parry at least three of us and sent us packing. Crazy.

There are other ways to go. :c

I've heard that so many times... in forums, on podcasts etc.

It always amazes me (in a sad way) that there are gamers out there who run into this situation and just give up instead of looking for other directions to go. The hand-holdy design philosophy of most modern games has really taken its toll.

Ummm, I did look for other ways to go but I just couldn't seem to find them for some reason.

Don't feel bad. This is happening enough to where I feel like it can't be just that many gamers are who are spoiled by super easy "hand hold-y" games.

Ninja Gaiden is one of the hardest games of the past few generations (and a hub world game, no less) and there's hardly a question as to where you're supposed to go in it.

In Dark Souls there's three paths that branch from the Firelink Shrine. Only one is really available to you as a beginner. Don't go to your right up through the ruins, don't go down the stairs to your left and into that elevator thing. Turn around from your starting location and head up a steep set of stairs cut into a cliff. That's the start of the game.

And watch your back in the Undead Burg, or else you'll experience the fun of getting ganked by another player while you're still getting your feet wet. But only if you're human. You'll have to wiki the whole humanity mechanic to get the full gist of what being human or hollow entails because apparently explaining any of that would have been too hand hold-y.

I like the game but it's initial presentation goes way past the point of a fun challenge and into, "fuck you, find a wiki" territory.

Ummm, I did look for other ways to go but I just couldn't seem to find them for some reason.
How long did you look?

I mean, yeah, there's no sign to direct you at the beginning but I don't think the other paths are that hard to find.

When I started the game, I ran into the skeletons, too. But after a few failed tries I explored the area around the bonfire.

After reading someones advise in this thread I went back into Demon's Souls. I have managed to kill a couple more bosses, here is my progress so far is:

1.1, 1.2
2.1, 2.2, 2.3
3.1
4.1
5.1

I am not too sure which area to go to next, I tried 5.2 but got killed by a black phantom. I have however figured out that I should be farming souls. I can get about 10,000 souls on a run in 4.1, so I am able to now stock up on useful shit or levelling up. I really enjoy the game but I can only die a couple of times before getting frustrated and stopping.

Does anybody know how far I am from finishing because Dark Souls looks more appealing due to the more lively online

3.2 and boss in 3.3
4.2 and boss in 4.3
5.2 and boss in 5.3
Then 1.3 and boss 1.4.
You can farm rather easily in 4.2(or whichever is the cliffside one) with about 5.5k(with ring) souls within 30sec,
just roll down, enter the huge room and bowkill the reaper from the upper level
.

EDIT: I guess there might be about 5-6h left on normal progressing speed, since the .3 parts really are just the final act bosses directly after the .2 boss area.

For me, Dark Souls had a reverse difficulty curve. The game seemed extremely hard at first (I think I spent like a week on the first Undead Burg bonfire; it helped that I went in completely blind and repeatedly tried different stuff like killing Havel and the Hydra. :D), but as I played, it became easier and easier (insane spikes like Smough and Ornstein notwithstanding), until by the end I was killing most bosses in 1-2 tries.

Of course, me being who I am, my fondest memories are of Undead Burg. Don't misunderstand me, the whole game is amazing, but I guess the feeling of having to learn a hostile stage by heart, miss-and-you-die oldschool gameplay, coupled with the amazingly immersion, not to mention the feeling when I finally beat the first (non-tutorial) boss... one of the most amazing experiences this generation.

Many of the later areas are even more amazing (praying for a good enough PC port to salivate all over the HD goodness), and the game definitely gets harder, but since I was much more experienced by then (not to mention better equipped), in some of them I only spent a few hours in.

Still, this is for sure one of the top five games this generation. To add a cherry on top, this game (and Demon Souls, which I started playing) came to my attention because of GAF. :)

I mostly agree, once the game clicks it's amazing. I just think FS could have included an extra couple pages in their manual to explain some of the mechanics better and the game wouldn't have been one bit worse off.

Just finished 4.2 and 4.3 in Demons Souls :), I was pretty surprised at how easy both of the fights were, the 4.2 boss just seemed to pace around and ignore me, so I could just spam magic attacks at him.
