The Giant Bomb Quick Look Thread 2

I'm not dismissing it at all. I played and finished P3 and P4 at launch and thought they were great games, but I'd also be lying if I didn't recognize a ton of common tropes used in anime along the way. Again, it's not a bad thing.

I'm not saying that the game doesn't use anime tropes, I'm just saying that the used it better in the game than in the anime adaptation.

The anime is still extremely well done. They fitted in way more of the game's story and characters than I thought they would.

The treatment of Kanji's sexuality is the low point. It's one thing for Yosuke to be a stereotypical teenage dick about it, but they shouldn't have had Yu be one, too.

I dunno what's happening in here but I don't like it at all

Yeah, giving one of Yosuke's homophobic lines from the game to Yu during the camping trip was easily the worst part of the show for me. They clearly didn't have enough time to flesh out Kanji or Naoto's stories, so they glossed over them (and made Kanji's comic relief) instead of actually trying.

Yosuke does act dickish but he tells Kanji in a dungeon that "Don't worry, we love you man!"

Yosuke is Yosuke of course, and then follows up with a "ERR, not in that way!"

In the game of course, many people might have never seen the optional dungeon convo's that happen when you go deep into dungeons you already beat once.

Isn't Iblis the last boss of Sonic 2006?!?!

Filmmaking-wise, though, that looks all right. Probably plays like shit, but someone edited that pretty nicely.

The audible disbelief after the 3 point "throw" where the karate man picked up the junkyard man and just dropped him like he was too heavy was great.

Best brad needs to team up with Giant Bomb to make the best FMV game ever.

Its clearly the only option at this point.

I meant the Japanese are not very good at the whole self aware thing, but to your point the Japanese are also often terrible writers. I have not played Nier, but Ico is hardly a great example of story telling because of it's writing and more the lack of it. Same goes for Shadow of the Colossus.

"...if you ignore a sizable list from Japanese media I have never seen and hope no one mentions."

Not really. Most JRPG follow a lot of the same tropes of awkward wording of animes, but the reason I get so behind games like Persona and Yakuza is because either the writing or the translating makes it flow better in English. The drunk Yukiko/club scene is the corniest part of P4 and feels like it belongs in an anime because it's unbelievable and feels like it's just there to be there. The rest of the game does a decent job of capturing what high school kids actually act like rather than what animes think they act like

No, that was the hot springs scene. It's always the hot springs scene...always a hot springs scene...

Stay Dead looks like a lot of fun, hahaha
I don't know that I would enjoy playing it, but it looks great.

Italian Martial Arts are the only martial arts I trust.

From the Achievement list it looked like they were 3 fighters left, not just the 2 on the title screen. I wonder who was the last guy... maybe a doppelganger.

the whole 'nah this is actually good' thing in that quick look felt really forced, like all of a sudden Jeff felt guilty for shitting on a shitty game and the other were compelled to play along.

it looks like a steaming pile of shit thats barely even a game. they shouldn't be nice to bad developers because they feel sorry for them, they should tell it like it is.

Giant Bomb coming around and enjoying a cheesy FMV game is pretty much exactly the thing I would expect them to do. And something being barely a game wouldn't stop them either, especially after all the deserved praise they gave to Asura's Wrath.

That looked all right, but it seems like how well it analyses music could impact how it plays a lot. If it requires really bass-heavy techno or dance tracks to actually work, then my interest drops significantly. Otherwise that looks better than Audiosurf.

I am pretty sure it was Vinny and Ryan who first started praising the game for not looking poorly thrown together. I don't think any of them said it was a good game, just that the FMV stuff was pretty well done.

Symphony looks okay.

I share Ryan's sentiment that it just doesn't really look like they did much with the music part of it. It seems so secondary to the game. Made me want to play AudioSurf some more, though.
