Papa Johns CEO wants to raise Pizza prices in order to offset Obamacare costs

"If Obamacare is in fact not repealed, we will find tactics to shallow out any Obamacare costs and core strategies to pass that cost onto consumers in order to protect our shareholders best interests," Schnatter vowed.

This part is what bothers me the most. This is precisely why healthcare shouldn't be put into the hands of private industry. They'll do everything they can to "protect" shareholders, but not everything they can to get healthcare to the very people that make the shit they're selling. It's disgusting.

"Our best estimate is that the Obamacare will cost 11 to 14 cents per pizza, or 15 to 20 cents per order from a corporate basis," Schnatter said.

So if I assume the worst of the estimates . . . 20 cents more a pizza? And then I can have the Pizza guilt-free knowing the employees have healthcare.

WELL THEN FUCKING DO IT. Sheesh. I guess I'm a bleeding-heart . . . I can't believe he'd rather have the guilt of some employee dying of cancer w/o health insurance when all he'd have to do is charge 20 cents more for a pizza. I really don't think 20 cents is going to make or break your company compared to your competitors. Hell . . . advertise the fact that you pay for your employees healthcare with 20 cents more per pie and that your competitors are letting their employees die of cancer w/o insurance and I'm sure you'll get a boost of business.

I would gladly pay less than 1% extra on all my purchases for better and more affordable healthcare for myself and everyone else

Are there people out there who wouldn't?

Papa John’s CEO: ObamaCare Means Higher Pizza Prices

1. Papa Johns Pizza sucks
2. Good for Dominoes and Pizza Hut's business. Go for it, Papa John Schnatter.
3. You are an asshole if you want to shift costs on consumers for giving your employees healthcare.
4. Papa John Schnatter should shut the fuck up.

I don't really see how this is an outrageous notion. All employee pay and benefits come from the employer who gets money from selling goods and services. I don't know how you can distinguish between "shifting costs onto consumers" and just running a business in a typical profitable way.

Do people actually still think Romney isn't going to get creamed? If he just spent the fundraising for Romney money on it, he wouldn't have to raise prices.

This is what has always bothered me about publically traded companies in general. One of the most destructive pieces of law ever was the one stating that these companies are legally obligated to make money for their shareholders over all else.

I thought the HC reforms are meaningless to big corporations because they pretty much already provide everyone with health coverage.

I'm willing to spend an extra quarter if it means the thousands of Papa John's employees out there will have healthcare.
I'm not so vain that I'd be insulted by this, Mr. Schnatter.

Basically, if you're gonna shift the costs, then just do it and shut up about it. Don't try to rabble rouse.

I'm not understanding, obviously. Is he being truthful that the costs are going to impact his bottom line?

Probably. I, like most people, do not completely understand Obamacare. I doubt they would make it up if it was not hurting their bottom-line somehow.

it's cheap but only good when very fresh. although yeah, if i get pizza then at least 50% of the time it's from little caesar's.

Wait, people like Little Ceaser's for reasons other then the absurdly low cost? I used to love them but when they went to Hot and Ready their pizza quality took a nosedive. Its like 80% crust now

I'm not from the USA, so please excuse me if I'm speaking out of turn or misunderstanding something here, but I find it absolutely torrid that a company would so vocally drag their customers into their politics regardless of their opinion. He "promises" to pass costs on to customers? That just strikes me as being completely unaware of what a customer actually is to them.

They do it all the time. Just search for the latest tipping thread. Tipping in America is actually a terrible management decision. There is animosity between certain customers and service workers and management is okay with that. And we allow it. Name one other industry where that is acceptable? It's not.

Lol why are people so angry about this? I'll pay the goddam ten cents so that they can have healthcare and wages remain the same.

1) I've always hated Papa John's pizza and assumed most of GAF loved it. WTF. lol

2) Excuse my ignorance, but what the hell does pizza have to do with healthcare?

Well, tipping goes beyond just restaurants. Hotel workers, caddies, delivery men, cabbies, drivers, house cleaners, movers, etc. all rely on tips.

Yeah I'm willing to pay 10 to 15 cents more whenever I order a pizza from them, which isn't very often. What's the big deal?

I'm not sure what's worse.

The Papa Johns guy or people in this thread saying they actually like Little Caesars..

Of course, your shareholders are probably not the ones eating your good. IF they were the additional $5 would would be a drop in the bucket.

their pizza was never stellar. even in the 90s their main selling point was getting 2 pizzas for the price of one. the price is definitely why i get it often since 1 pizza is more than enough for myself, my wife, and my kid.

Before Papa John's blew up it was actually decent fast food pizza, if you believe in such a thing. However, over the years the quality of ingredients and service have seriously plummeted. I couldn't tell you the last time I ordered fast food pizza let alone papa johns. They deserve any lost business that this decision costs them.
