Crysis 3 - CryEngine3 Tech Trailer

They didn't do it well. For some reason things like cement blocks had really complex tessellation maps inside of them, completely invisible but a huge drain on performance. I assume that, with 3 being built with tessellation in mind from the beginning, it'll be done better. Nvidia cards had no problem with it but AMD's struggled.

This is such a common misconception. When you turn on the ability to see geometry in the game (the vertecies and lines) it turns off the scaling in tesselation. So it ultra tesselates everything. There is a post on crydev about it somewhere.

Oh, my mistake. The only thing I had heard about it was the article on the previous page. Thanks for clearing that up.

It still makes no sense to tessellate a concrete barrier, flat panel of wood, or to have tessellated water being processed under the city streets at all.
The water isn't being processed under the streets when you're not in wireframe mode.

No, it doesn't make sense, but given how tessellation works, it isn't a problem for any decent card... Nvidia ones, anyways. Seems like AMD cards doesn't handle tessellation too well at the moment.

Wow real time shadows from clouds and fog, amazing. That top secret toad tech made me laugh, lovely tech demo. Simply beautiful.

Oh ok, so the water is being culled while playing?

Also I understand how tessellation works and that's a poor use of the tech. IMO it shouldn't be if you can do it but how efficiently you do it.

Was just about to ask for this one. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Tech demos like this are refined to the nth degree, so I'll remain cynical. Also probably running on a beast of a computer.

I'll be more interested if they showed an actual game on the Wii U with a decent art style powered by their engine, rather than uber-realistic PC shooters.

Refined? After your post about why PC gaming basically is not your cup of tea, I can't take anything you say seriously. No offense man. But I think you have some things to learn.

This is all in real time man. Again no offense I got nothin against you.

I'm not impressed by anything that just looks pretty.

So honestly as cool as all this is my overall reaction is just "okay".

I feel the same way.

Had they showed me some of their next gen physics, maybe some kind of real time terrain destruction then yea I would have been impressed.

Graphics just do not do it for me anymore.

I have to hand it to Crytek for putting this in a playable game that still scales down to current gen consoles, while Epic is releasing Fortnite that so far really push UE4 at all

Even though none of these features will make it on a console, it's still nice to see that the engine will

Actually damn amazing. Fuck those living in the past with Crysis 1. Let it go.

hmm?

If Crysis 3 is a good game, then I'm sure we'll all love it. If it's a crap game, nice graphics aren't going to save it from criticism.

That said, this trailer makes it appear that they are headed in the right direction.

How big a jump is this compares to crysis 2 with the dx11 patch? Because that did look amazing?

It's hard to tell, these are all specific features that Cryengine3 did not had before. But by the looks of it, they upgraded a lot of other things, like water reflections, geometry of the level looks way more complex, and textures also look much better.

I think it's kind of a shame that they make these gorgeous environments and then the game is basically SHOOT THE MEN. SHOOT ALL THE MEN AND MAKE THEM DEAD.

I was thinking the same thing.
I would love to have these visuals in something that is not an FPS.
Oh well, maybe in the future.

Goddamn. That comparison really put things into perspective. Although, was Morrowind really a looker when it came out?

We also had NOLF2:

Mafia:

And Soldier of Fortune 2:

Plus there was GTA3, BF 1942, Metroid Prime, etc.

Really cool to see those images from 10 years ago. My nostalgia goggles have greatly altered how I remember what they looked like.

Well I don't think it's really fair to use Morrowind as the example because it looked pretty shit even when it came out...

Anyway, this looks stunning but I really have trouble believing that that is representative of next gen. I mean really even this gen not many games look like Crysis on Ultra at 60fps, and that was from 2007.

It's going to be a long, long time until we are typically seeing games that look like this running at 60fps.

I really want to see Crytek do something else now. Methinks Crysis has run its course. Some of the mods on crydev are 100x more interesting (at least in concept).

And some members here will tell you that we apparently went the "wrong" direction. Fucking el Oh el.

Anyway, that footage figuratively blew my mind and left me literally open mouthed when I saw the tessellated foliage, its interactive nature in the game world and FROG. I mean too fucking good. Too good of level of detail.

Imagine how much better it would have looked if they focused only on the PC and were not gimped by having to make a console version.
