Mitt Romney announces Paul Ryan as running mate

Smart move from Romney.

He needed to differentiate himself from Obama... I don't agree with how extreme Ryan's proposed budget was, but this pick certainly enforces the fact that this administration would cut the shit out of just about everything.

Personally I always found Clinton to be the better debater in 2008, even though most of neogaf disagreed with me. Obama is a great speaker (with script), but I don't find him necessarily a good debater. Purely talking in style and pacing here, not the content of the discussion.

And I find the comments about Ryan's looks a little off putting. You're not doing yourselves any services by saying stuff like "I could never vote for a guy that looks like ...".

Which is the problem. People and and think they want to cut government spending, but when you get down to specifics they always say no. Ryan has written down and publicized a list of all the very popular things he wants to get rid of.

You can differentiate yourself with Obama without putting privatization of Medicare and Social Security front and center.

He got a lot better over the course of the election. He clearly had the edge over McCain in their debates, and it's not like McCain was a lightweight...

Hey, not saying it's going to work.

But if they believe they can convince the American people (which they've done before), that tax breaks to the upper earners creates more jobs then more power to them.

It was a necessary move for Romney.

There are voters and there are voters. When we talk about republicans voting against their interests we mean small business owners and lower class white people. The elderly bloc is another story. They pay more attention (because they have more time) and many of them are the textbook definition of single issue voters. They will not appreciate Ryan.
 
Hm, interesting, on my Facebook feed this morning at least two people I know who are generally Republican/anti-Obama posting comments seriously eviscerating Paul Ryan. I wouldn't be surprised if he costs Romney some votes. Than again, I'm from his district so they know him much better then the rest of the country.

I can only hope this is true because if so Florida goes blue again and more seniors across the country will vote Obama. But I have been personally a little shocked by senior citizens who simply hate Obama for no reason but then again those voters were never gonna vote democratic to begin with.

Well... Romney. Which is why the right hates him and he has gone out of his way to trash all his previous opinions and policies as governor and reinvent himself for the base, but no-one's buying it. Romney is a political whore - "I can be anyone you want me to be, baby."

I don't know if he got better over the course of the election (might be), but it most certainly has to do with McCain being a worse debater than Clinton. It's not surprising that once Obama went from debating Clinton to McCain, he appeared to be better.
 
Good move for Romney, but it's weird Ryan would want to be on the ticket. He's pretty powerful now as House Budget Committe chairman, moreso than VP. I guess the White House is still a powerful draw.

It would be naturally more difficult to debate someone like Clinton, since policy wise they weren't THAT different from one another.

As unfortunate as it is in this day and age, race is still an issue to a lot of individuals of the senior citizen demographic...
 
As unpopular as the ACA is, I don't think tying it to killing medicare is gonna work to distract voters from the Ryan Budget's killing of medicare but its probably the move they could make. Will be interesting to see how this issue plays out.
 
I know I'm about 19 pages late to the party, but I just woke up to the news.

I wasn't voting for Romney anyway, so maybe I'm biased here, but this decision gets a big WHAT THE FUCK from me. How does Ryan help Romney in anyway?

-They're virtually identical (clean cut attractive middle aged wealthy northern white men) demographically so this doesn't expand the ticket's appeal in any way
-Ryan is a tea party darling, all of whom were voting for Romney anyway
-Ryan's only signature quality (his budget) is super toxic and probably the only thing that kept Republicans from sweeping 100% in 2010
-Romney's key weakness, that he's a mega rich out of touch billionaire only concerned with other rich people, is not helped by selecting another guy only concerned with helping the uber wealthy
-This basically swings the entire bloc of elderly voters to Obama, which is devastating
-In a head-to-head comparison of Obama v Romney, the only subject on which Romney is even tied with Obama is the economy--Obama is clearly more experienced/qualified/"marketable" in other aspects such as defense, diplomacy, immigration, education, social issues, environment, etc. Ryan brings absolutely nothing to any of these. What is Romney going to do in the debates, which won't focus 100% on the economy?

As I said in my previous posts, I'm specifically talking style, pacing and appearance, not the content of the debate. In which I found Clinton the best debater, followed by Obama, and then McCain.

The point being that by the time you get to picking a VP, you aren't supposed to be playing solely to your base. Ryan appeals to no one except a) tea partiers (going to vote Romney anyway) b) Republicans (going to vote Romney anyway) and c) rascists* (going to vote Romney anyway).

*Not that Ryan is racist, just that he's as generic non-threatening white bread as you can get.

Palin was an idiot, but was a blank slate on day one. Ryan has major built-in negatives that leads me to believe this pick was just Romney buckling to party pressure.

Medicare has already been killed by Baby Boomers getting fatter than any generation of people in history and having contraceptive sex. All that's left is managing its death. Even if Romney/Ryan lose in a landslide based on Medicare-centric attack ads, whatever exists 30 years from now will be different than Medicare.

How about the cuts to everything? From the analyses I've read by 2050 the US government would practically cease to exist the way we know it now. The budget would be squeezed to almost nothing outside of social security and the military.
