Rumor: Apple to announce new iPhone and iPad mini on September 12th

Saved my MBP MANY times from being grabbed to the floor when the cable gets pulled etc.

I lost a Vaio TZ because the cord got wrapped around my foot and sent the laptop flying when I stood up. I refuse to buy a laptop that doesn't have a magsafe adapter now. Shame the build quality on them sucks, though. I have to replace mine every 9 or so months.

Bigger screen. Taller AND wider or no go for me.

My iphone 4 battery is getting really bad these days. Can't make it through half a day even with decent use.

Of course no one is 100% sure what the thing will look like. Odd that there's been SO many leaks of parts, etc. though.

Magsafe is fine by me. So is the bigger phone. 4"+ or bust. :P

The white looks so damn good with the aluminum. Much different from the 4/4S white with all white glass back.

More people are eligible for an upgrade this year than ever before obviously, so it has the potential to be massive (look at how great the 4S did despite relatively muted critical reaction). I can only imagine upgrading from 3GS>2012 iPhone. Major upgrade.

I am concerned about the battery life, unless they have redesigned the processors to be more power efficient I can see the battery life being just as bad as a 4S when in use.

I love how the phone looks, being a little longer is fine to me as the 4 is already rather smallish compared to some smartphones out there.

It's a longer phone, will it be larger in overall volume to allow for a bigger battery?

I held off upgrading a couple of times this year hoping the rumours were true.

The only thing I'll miss from my 3gs is its sturdiness; it's damn-near indestructible.

Guess I'll go white to match my iPad3 (and that means I'll buy a white iPad-mini too xD).

Any word on how they will handle the launch? Will it be like the new iPad, meaning a couple of selected markets having it earlier (glad I'm in one of those)?

It's significantly thinner, which could offset the added volume from length. It's possible it's actually smaller in overall volume.

Looking at that link posted above:

Thinness is a major feature of this design. Take a look at your iPhone 4/4S from the side. Now imagine that the new design is only as thick as the metal band. That’s a big deal. From my estimates, that would make this design anywhere from 2-3mm thinner than the iPhone 4S. That sounds small, but it’s a huge difference. That’s as much as 32 percent thinner. As a point of comparison, the Retina MacBook Pro is only 25 percent thinner than the old MacBook Pro.

My concern is, however, is that AT&T is going to force everyone to get a new plan, or at least a new data plan with the new iPhone because of LTE. Is that a legitimate concern, or should I not be worried?

I would be surprised if AT&T didn't use this as an excuse to get all the people who are grandfathered in to an unlimited plan to switch over to something with a cap.

They ought to give people the option of keeping unlimited 3G OR getting a capped 4G account.....but they are such assholes you'll probably be forced to go to capped 4G no matter what.

I liked the white iPhone 4s, but I like the new black one. It seems a much more 'serious' design with the harder metal, and thus seems more appropriate in black.

And I love MagSafe and all, but seriously, how light would the magnets have to be on a phone to detach and not pull a thin phone off? I don't think a MagSafe is practical for a phone. Also, the cable is often just plugged into a mac or something as well, and not dangling off a table as much yes, I'm aware they come with a wall charger, but still.

Yeah they are on the ropey side as far as build quality goes. The charging cables for iPhone aren't great, either.

Weird as Apple hardware is super high quality, but I guess they are super cheap and they make a billion of them.

My MagSafe has bite marks in it from one of my cats lol.

Really warming up to the dark/black version of that design.

Its like the iPhone1 2. The sequel.

No Mac? MagSafe is fantastic. You don't even have to connect anything. It just snaps on when it gets close via magnets.

I have an iMac, iPhone and iPad - no macbook, never used one ever either, actually. I really don't know anything about magsafe, fair to say I am ignorant in that technology and what it offers....

is iPad mini even a realistic chance? there have been basically no leaks, while there are iphone 5 leaks left and right

It's a certainty. It's just not in mass production yet, probably. So that's why we aren't seeing leaks yet aside from cases. Kuo, the only analyst who actually has a spot on track record, said a few weeks ago that iPad mini would go in production shortly after iPhone 5. We'll see it soon.

Same. The design is growing on me, and that guy's column explaining the industrial design really points out how much of a refinement it is.

There have been leaks, it is just a bit hard to steal parts out of a factory for the iPad Mini than it is for an iPhone.

Look at when the iPad came out, there was nothing till game-day.

Also remember, iPhone's are built in China. Aka where all the leaks come from.

Starting this year iPad production has shifted to Brazil.

Here's a great article breaking down the new design.

It's the same horizontal resolution and width, though I would've liked an all-around increase as well. At this point we know exactly what it will look like with 99.9% certainty.

Great read. Man if this is what the new iPhone will look like, that would be sweet. I am tempted to sell my 4s and get the new iPhone, but the 4s has been nothing but amazing...

My main interest is the metal back. Love that about Apple products and the glass back feels great, but the current iPhone does feel fairly fragile.

Well The WSJ/NYT/etc fell into line proclaiming the iPad mini is happening this fall. It is expected regardless of the leaks.

Exactly. It's extremely likely despite the lack of leaks, which is pretty exciting. It's been quite a while since the community has been genuinely surprised with a major product announcement.

Here's some more screenshots of iOS 6 running at 1136x640:

Looks like they're putting the extra screen space to good use.

I actually don't care for apple products, but the iphone 4 is one of the most beautiful pieces of hardware to come out in the past decade. It will be interesting to see where the design goes from here.

New 8-pin connector looks cool and I like the idea of easier insertion.
Complete pain in the ass on the iPad. Hope the next one has that too.

Will charging speeds be similar? I know nothing of these things.

So, question about the new iPhone. This is my first time getting one at launch. Between myself and my family, we're going to need four of the new iPhone (cheapest model... 16GB or whatever). How likely is it that we will be able to go into a store the evening of release or the next day and get all four?

I want to pre-order it, but my dad refuses to let me. He has ridiculous rules on lots of things and they must be done his way basically. He wants us all to upgrade in-store. I'm afraid it may be a while before we can find it in stock if we don't go early in the morning when it releases. My current iPhone doesn't make phone calls, I have to use my mom's cellphone to make calls (I don't make many calls, I text a lot... however it's still a hassle). So I'm trying to get it as soon as it releases, but my dad is in no rush. So what are my chances looking like?

It may be a while for you.

if your dad doesn't want to preorder he's not going to want to wait in line the first day. Odds aren't good for you.

Yeah, that breakdown is a great read. It's really stunning that there has been so many leaks and photos now. For a product that Apple can't/won't officially admit exists, we have better info and amazing photos that basically aren't even seen on basically any other phone, even months after release.

The theory - although as of yet completely unconfirmed through part leaks - was that all existing iOS products would be upgraded immediately to the 8-pin, meaning you'd see the current rev of the iPad 3 with an 8-pin version, iPod touch with an 8-pin, etc.

Charging speed would be the same. The 30pin connector is not lacking for power requirements, and what usually kills your charging speed is a density increase (ie: more battery capacity in the same package = higher density). One leak report put the iPhone5 battery as virtually the same capacity as the 4S, just more spread out to fill the new frame. Any power savings is probably coming from the LTE dieshrink and whatever new processors they use.

Day one upgrades are a nightmare, anyway. At least here up north, what usually happens is the telco sites they need to access to apply your plan upgrades (if you buy subsidy phones) get hit harder than NeoGaf during E3 and they basically keep crashing until either:

a) you get a lucky low-load moment

or

b) apple gives you a line voucher and tells you to come back another day

or

c) you give in and buy a non-subsidy unlocked phone (~$600-800)

Given the amount of iPhones produced this time, things might not be as bleak. It might not be a Day 1 kind-of deal but at worst I think you'll have to wait a week.

would make using the phone with a dock far easier, and i imagine the initial price of replacement cables and Apple's profit margin off them also justified the switch.

the design is nice, the increase in screen size is appreciated, but it just doesn't feel...holistic anymore. the harmonious balance of the 3.5" screen to my thumb is gone, and with it a different level of chi and spirit now defines this phone. however i will likely continue to be overwhelmed with emotion when using this device, a reality Google and Samsung will never inspire with their photocopiers.

and, finally, i can upgrade without a case and make sure everyone realizes that i own the latest phone. i felt embarrassed correcting those who thought i was merely using a 4 and not a 4S for the past year. how foolish some people can be...

I just hope an ipad mini doesn't delay the inevitable ipad 4 from coming out in the usual timeslot of March/April. I didn't buy a 3rd gen ipad because I wanted a bigger leap but I don't know how much longer I can live without retina.
