3DS XL First Impressions/Previews

I don't use 3D anymore. Not that it doesn't work, but for me it's... pointless?

I dunno, I guess it's just a gimmick for me. I don't need it with 5" screen.

Same here. I turn it on once in a while to see what I'm missing, but other than that, I keep it off. For me, it's just so finicky anyway. Move my head slightly, 3d effect gone. Move the 3ds slightly when pushing a button, 3d effect gone. It's just not for me either.

Sounds about right. I always leave it off. Every once and a while I'll flick it on to see what things look like, but I immediately turn it off right after.

I usually have it on for games unless there's an issue with the 3D for that specific title, but if I'm buggering about with general interface stuff like the Home screen, eShop and so on then I just turn it off as I can't be bothered holding it in place.

I always play with 3D all the way on unless I'm playing a game wherein the 3D truly adds nothing and is just a battery-waster, like Tales of the Abyss or Theatrhythm.

For most other games, though, like Super Mario 3D Land and Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance, it's a must for me.

I preordered a red XL online from Gamestop. Does anyone know how they typically ships new systems? Will it arrive, or ship, on the 19th? Is it possible I might receive it early?

you'll be better off just picking one up in store tbh. I think they'll ship it on release day and you get in a day or two after.

The impression I get from different forums and such...it almost seems like people using 3D vs those not using it is about 50/50. That almost makes me wonder why it even exists, if it really isnt needed and not even used by millions of people? All it does is add to the cost of the handheld and make development slightly harder/longer.

If a non-3D 3DS existed for $50/$75 cheaper, would it not sell like hotcakes?

Because all Nintendo consoles need some form of a gimmick.

i had a moment of crisis I though the sweetspot was harder to find. I though the image flickering is worse on the new screen. I still have my normal 3ds and i compared. It turned out that the flickering starts happening at the same angle and with the same degree.

The "problem" is that with the bigger screen everything is clearer, including the flickering.

I guess many people think it is cooler to say they ignore the 3ds.

Personally, the 3D effect seems to drastically improve the image. You lose a fairly drastic part of the presentation by dropping to 2D.

Nintendo isn't going to release a 2D version of the system.

Is the yellow tint issue something that's visible on all of them, or just a problem with some that can warrant a replacement?
With european units I've seen it's only slightly on the top screen and only when 3D is off

Although I'm hearing people say it's on both screen and in worse degrees

Ordered Chrono Trigger for this event. Never played it so should be fun.

I envy you. I remember my first time playing it.

Yellow tint is a product of the tech Nintendo chose. Same as the DSI XL. The amount of yellow tint appears to vary, with some people just getting some and others getting an ungodly yellow hue, which for me would necessitate a return.

There are those of us, who fell in love with the 3D feature and use it for many of the games. I don't want it removed, and the cost of the feature is irrelevant. 3D was a huge selling point of the hardware (for me personally). Rather than considered gimmicky, I consider 3D as a inherent successor trait/unique differentiator. I don't want a DS2....it wouldn't be a 3DS without the named differentiator built into its genetic hardware.

It's a differentiator from the PSVita (which I also own). Or any other system, for that matter. How many other systems have games DESIGNED and built for 3D immersion from scratch? Games like Mario 3D Land, Kid Icarus Uprising, Mutant Mudds and Resident Evil Revelations are unique and excel because the hardware is built around the feature. Therefore many games are built around the feature.. It wasn't an afterthought, but a new vision for these new experiences, for old and new series'.

A suped up DS (plain DS2) would not appeal to me. I have a Vita for that. A suped up - eh, it just would be better textures and stuff. 3D on the 3DS constantly captivates in a way Back to the Future's 2000 appealed to me as a kid, in the eighties. It's just so forward and futuristic.

Hence my fevered frothing for the XL on Sunday.

Couldn't the yellow tint be 2 things?

1) glue (he iPad, ipodtouch and iPhone) have all suffered a yellow tint which dissipates over time. They suffere a yellower tint as the screen glue hasn't dried fully.

2) new antiglare coating

That I haven't played it yet or there's no unified VC system? :P

I may just go and get the DS version. I vastly prefer RPGs on portables instead of consoles

haha, no the fact that vc content isn't cross platform. Such an obvious progression, but I'm sure they have their reasons...

I enjoy watching you repeat the same 3 things every page.

He asked a question, I responded again with the facts. If you want to deny the facts, then go ahead and present your own. Or sit around and scream at everyone who asks a question that's been answered numerous times to go back and read 100 pages until they find it. In other words shhhhhhhhh.

Or it could be what Nintendo says it is right on their own support page. Warmer screens. If your bottom screen appears to be warmer than the top, they say that's due to the coating on the touchscreen. I haven't seen anything on their site or officially from Nintendo yet about how the new anti-glare coating affects the temp of the screen.

Is battery better with 3d off? I don't plan on using it much unless I just want to briefly see what the 3D effects are.

Much better with it off.

I don't give a shit about the 3D. So I'm all about the bigger screen, better buttons and better stylus placement. <3

Most of my games arent even in 3D (DS games), so I'm with you on that. Better dpad location, better buttons, bigger screens, stylus etc etc.

1. They don't even have an account system yet, which is way more important than a cross platform VC.

2. It will take 10+ years before they have all the Wii games on the 3DS/next gen DS as well. If we ever get most of them.

Chill man, was being light-hearted. Everyone's excited for the release, I understand all the questions. I can see how I could be taken seriously though.

What was annoying about it?
I'm only 2 hours into the game myself, but the main character (Luke) is kinda annoying. Hopefully that changes as the story progresses.

edit: I just googled "Tales of the Abyss annoying" and 3 of the first 4 results were this:

I guess I'm not alone![/QUOTE]I was actually planning on getting this last week, now I'm not so sure... How annoying is it? Like Squall annoying, or really whiny annoying? Is it a good RPG otherwise (not really into tales games but I enjoyed Symphonia)

Oh, Luke is extremely annoying, but the rest of the cast is worse [MieuMieuMieuMieuMieuMieuMieuMieuMieuMieuMieuMieuMieu]. Dude with glasses (forgot his name) may be the only passable character in that game.

The source for each of those quotes is Gamefaqs...

oh please... gaf is about the level of gamefaqs if you average stuff out :/

I always felt connected with Luke for some reason. When he's all like 'Miu is annoying' or 'the lore of this world is retarded' i nod. But it depends on when in the game.

The only game I play with the 3D on about 50% of the time or greater is Resident Evil and Kid Icaris. Unfortunately, KI has to be the most uncomfortable game in the world to play on any console. Its like a balancing act of holding the system with one hand (unbalanced), be able to use the L button, and navigate and tap with the stylus.

The fact that a stand exists for the game reminds me too much of playing virtual boy.

I will say that KI was very nice in 3D. The depth added when doing the flying portions seemed like a joy, which is very similar to playing Star Fox in 3D.

Generally, after spending 15 minutes in 3D, I tend to turn if off completely. Playing games like Heroes of Ruin online, with 3D just kills the battery. The experience isn't really enhanced with 3D capability so I really don't see the point.

It's nice to have a feature like that. I bought an LG Thrill for the 3D. Being able to take 5MP shots/movies is pretty nice, but a feature like that is wasted if you don't have a 3D TV (not yet)

Anxiously awaiting a call from the store I pre-ordered my XL at. They routinely break street date on pretty much everything, so I hope to get it sometime before Sunday!
