Guild Wars 2 Launch Date announced: August 28th, 2012

Mmm, no. Nothing from GW1 matters any more. You could reserve names* via GW1 up to July 31st

*Two word 'first and last' names only

Right in GW2 there are no limits other than a max character limit- so your Guardian can be named just "GOB" or "GOB the Real Magician" if it fits

I just meant in GW2, didn't mean the GW1 reservations.

So because you can have multiple words in a name, you have a high chance of getting the name you want I guess.

Oh sorry, I misunderstood.

About your chances...

Because you can have multiple words in a name, you have way more options to choose from this time around. However, because you aren't required to have a first and last name like in GW1, the chances of you getting the exact name you want are sort of up in the air. If you want a single-world name like "Champion" or "Starkiller" or "Brainiac" or "Colossus" you're gonna have to try pretty hard right at headstart to lock it up. If you want to be "Silrgaz the Rocketface" your odds are quite good indeed.

Ermmm what about those Nvidia drivers that were supposed to hit today? Was hoping we could test the gains in performance in this stress test.

Well main focus for me is to get the first word of the name to be what I want. The last name I'm flexible on. But if multiple words gives me a higher chance to get that first name I want, then all the better.

Pre-Purchase with 3-Day Headstart: Everyone who pre-purchased Guild Wars 2 will enjoy three full days of Headstart Access. The three-day Headstart Access will officially begin at 0:00 AM Pacific time (GMT -7:00) on August 25th. However, please note that in order to ensure that we’re fully prepared for that fateful hour we may bring servers online up to 3 hours prior. If you’re a player committed to getting in first to grab that character name of your dreams you’ll want to be keeping an eye on things during that time period.

Didn't know about that. Three hours of constantly trying to login. Oh god.

I imagine people are going to buy gems so they can buy character slots immediately.

like Guild Wars 1 there can only be one person across all servers with the same name. there can only be one totalbiscuit.

I think people are going to quickly make characters so they have dips on short popular names with no last names like "Neo" "Legolas" "Sims" "John" "Avatar" "Chair" Those short iconic name. this is diminished in other mmos because people can be named the same thing.. on different servers.

But across all worlds in Guild Wars 2, there will only be one guy named John.

my little brother wants to name his characters after the ninja turtles, so as soon as the headstart begins, he will see if he can make rafael, leonardo, donatello and michaleniolo and probably splinter (the rat). he wont have time to go through the customization, he just wants to have dips on the names as he think this will make him more recognizeable as he will try to make his mark on the community.

I think a lot of that is going to go around. its the one word names that really mean something because people with first and last names can be difficult to spell or remember correctly and its more complicated to /whisper or /mail or shout or add them to friends or talk about them in e-sport terms. but people will remember the one guy called nothing but John, hehe.

Personally I am going to try and get the name "Toilet". I might have to buy an extra slot just to have that name for a joke character. I think I will just roleplay him as a sort of melandru-ish version of jehovas witnesses. I just hope males can wear dresses in gw2.

edit: i did a test of this; you can name a character something and delete him, and immediately make a new character with the same name. i didnt experience that classic "the character name is unavailable"

when using guild chat, is your character or account name displayed next to your comments? Could be rather annoying to memorize all the character names of every guild member.

Can I reserve a name for a friend not in the headstart?

Say I make a char named Lord Admiral Bowels The Third. Can I then delete the char so that my friend can take the name?

Yes. Once you get a name, you can delete it and you have it reserved for 24 hours. So, best thing to do is create character, select "skip to end", name character, and submit as fast as possible.

People are very hardcore about the name grabbing. I know of people that have written scripts and created macro strings so they only need to press one button to grab the names they want within a second.

i haven't been following gw2 at all really, but are they still going through with reserving gw1 names for gw2?

Think I might move my preorder from NewEgg to Amazon. Only got $10 with a coupon but nothing else seems to be offered from them. I have more credit with amazon and they are offering $5 credit if you get it from them with the item. A week might be enough time to download the client if I go for the digital version.

What? It takes me 30 minutes to download the client and you're telling me it takes you several days? Are you on Mars or something? Also you do know you will be patching that DVD version for hours and hours if your connection really is that slow, right? I mean just start downloading it now and you'll be all set ^^

I have a DSL connection (which is fine for online gaming and normal patching) and only do big downloads overnight. So it could take a while. Perhaps not a full week but maybe three nights or less if nothing goes wrong. I could have it running constantly even while at work but that that just destroys the connection speed for others.

What's holding you from downloading the client right now?

Have you guys been reading that thread about WoW getting its first content patch in 8 months? Looks like we're destined to be another flash in the pan because WoW still has the most subscribers. GG. :(

GW2 will never be as popular as WoW. Day 1 of WoW 5.0 will have multiples more people playing than first year of GW2 players combined.

Yet somehow I don't give a fuck.

I don't think it's too far-fetched to predict that GW2 will sell more than 3 million copies till 2013. The game will have a healthy player-base.
