I want to give Dark Souls one last shot. Help me.

But I relaxed too much, thought 'Blighttown' sounded like it should be a safe place but instead was greeted by a douchebag on a bridge who knocked me off the edge. I cried a little. Especially because those souls would have enabled me to level Str and Dex enough to use the Black Knight Sword I've been carrying around for hours.

ProTip: Always spend your accumulated souls before exploring a new area.

SEATH the Scaleless? More like DEATH the Scaleless; 'cause he's DEAD. That is Pyromancer levels of burn right there, guys. No amount of Estus is going to flush away that posthumous humiliation.

He was quite easy once you figured out how to tackle him. My LightningMore was an absolute godsend for this part of the game. Where should I head next? I actually don't recall seeing any other areas sealed off by that blinding orange light, come to think of it.

Also, this is becoming a bit of a habit of mine; before I end a session, I warp to Firelink Shrine solely to bask in the aesthetic glory of my Hero as he glistens in the soft blue lighting of the sky and the autumn shades of the bonfire. I fucking adore the visual design behind this game (sans Frampt; I'm not too sure what they were going for there... Such an odd bastard). I've never seen such well-designed and well-realized pieces of armor in a game. I love how your hero bends his knee appropriately depending on the slope of the terrain. I love all the intricate detailing and texture work on my Silver Knight torso piece. Basically, what I'm trying to say is that knights look fucking AWESOME in this game.

One of the main reasons why I hate RPGs is the horrible artistic clashing that occurs due to gamers going funking bonkers with customization. Sure, if you're that way inclined, DS still grants you the tools to design something that more or less spits in the face of the designers, but there are so many options for characters that look as if they've been designed from the ground up. It's as if you can't see the seams of your character's customization, which is a great thing and something that I really appreciate.

After a tough area and big boss fight I was expecting to be given some room to breath, not nothing but more and harder enemies.. felt like a hassle to backtrack to a bonfire and have to face all the respawned enemies again but obviously that's what I should have done.
My first real "fuck this game" moment. It's unrelentless this game..

Thats why I keep 'homeward bone' with me all the time.

This game doesn't "coddle" you. It also didn't force you to press onward. *You* are responsible for your own danger level by virtue of what area you enter. Never feel like you're "too good" to retreat and regroup.

These were lessons I learned many years ago playing pencil and paper Dungeons & Dragons. :D
felt like a hassle to backtrack to a bonfire and have to face all the respawned enemies again but obviously that's what I should have done.
As noted, homeward bone is your friend for situations like this.

Several times, I began exploring an area, saw the opposition I was facing and said "nope" and used homeward bone. :D

Make sure you're spending your souls on levels and upgrades [before entering a new dangerous area]; you'll find the difficulty curve much easier to handle that way.

It won't help you from falling death, but loose Humanity can be used as emergency healing, so keep some on hand as insurance (can be farmed from the rodents in the Depths).

Haha. Get bent, Frampt. Not had your fill of dung pie, have you?

Okay. This is where I'm at; bolded is what has not been done:

Asylum Demon
Bell Gargoyle
Capra Demon
Ceaseless Discharge
Centipede Demon

Chaos Witch Quelaag
Crossbreed Priscilla
Dark Sun Gwyndolin
Demon Firesage
Four Kings

Gaping Dragon
Great Grey Wolf Sif
Gwyn Lord of Cinder

Iron Golem
Moonlight Butterfly
Nito
Ornstein and Smough
Pinwheel
Seath The Scaleless
Stray Demon
Taurus Demon
The Bed of Chaos

Damn. That seems like quite a bit. This game.

Go to hell. That is, go find Ceaseless Discharge and enter the nightmare that is the blooming lava of Lost Izalith.

Great Grey Wolf Sif, then Four Kings.

Have you figured out how to return to the Northern Undead Asylum?

I have. Though, Stray Demon tore me a new one, so I really don't want to go back there.

Isn't Stray Demon almost the same as Asylum Demon? I think the only changes you have to make to your strategy is to watch out for two new fire explosion spells he has. His downward stab signals a close-range explosion and the horizontal swing signals an explosion farther away. If you're melee I think you generally still stay behind him and just rolling away when he's about to stab his club downward.

Yeah, it was that goddamn explosion. Granted, this was a while ago and I only gave him two attempts, but it was very annoying.

On another note, I'm after some Titanite Chunks and I hear that the Darkwraiths in New Londo are where it's at. Worth it? What do I need to tackle these dudes?

They're humanoid so you can backstab them, and a few of them can be killed through walls or by sneaking up on them. Make sure to stock up on Homeward Bones for faster farming.

Nothing, just go ahead across the wooden bridge to the New Londo Ruins...

The Royal Giant Guards in Anor Londo drop Titanite Chunks.

I want to get back to it at some point. Maybe when the DLC comes out. Is there a timeframe on that?
"This Winter"? I want to believe that means November, but wouldn't complain if we had it by Christmas. Hope you get back into it - sounds like you had a really nice grasp of it but just got a bit burnt out.

SEATH the Scaleless? More like DEATH the Scaleless; 'cause he's DEAD.
Almost choked on my chocolate milk.

I cried a little.
The developers always give you an out...in addition to the bones mentioned...you can always get back to your bloodstain (guaranteed) if you wear a ring of sacrifice...even if you die a hundred times your bloodstain will still be there and you can get it as long as you wear the ring. You can even put it on after you die and even if you die again the stain will still be there. That siad humanity and souls are easily farmed and the amount you need ot get your sword going is small to be honest..particularly of you enjoy mulitplayer....just help others do their boss and reap the rewards.

Oh but you do! YOu get a titanite SLAB for killing him...only one of two guaranteed per playthrough and the second is incredibly easy to screw up...can't max regular armour or regular and lightning weapons without it.

Like many bosses its all or nothing with stray demon....takeoff all heavy armour so that you can roll at <25%, two hand your weapon, and just stay behind him in order not to get hit....only go in immediately after he does that AOE shot and spank him on the ass (which is magic not fire so if you actually do want to block or protect against it its MAGIC protect you need...but this is not recommended.) So go in give him two shots then retreat behind him again...rinse, repeat, get your slab and feel the maxed out glory which in your case ....who are we fooling?.......will be your lightmore +5.
On another note, I'm after some Titanite Chunks and I hear that the Darkwraiths in New Londo are where it's at. Worth it? What do I need to tackle these dudes?

Same as any enemy in souls...patience. I strongly recommend taking them on one at a time. Use a stable shield to circle strafe them and then backstab....they are incredibly quick to combo and basically kill you in one flurry...so do not get cocky and take them on trading blows...you will lose that style of battle a majority of the time. several of them can be dropped on from above, adn several can be snuck up on form behind...that's about as much creativity I will recommend...they are just really dangerous things to fight and to farm them means sticking to what works.....circle strafe backstab x2, on to the next. As an aside, they are known to rarely drop a SLAB...has never happened to me in over 1000 hours of souls...:( I do however get lotsof dark hands to give out to noobs in firelink when they summon me for help...they thinkits sooooo cool...lots of bang for the buck forthe "white knights" amoung us.

right...and use the bonfire in the space between valley of drakes and the basin...its way shorter, and easier to sneak up from behind for several wraiths....just run by the drakes.

...are you fucking kidding me?

That explains so much.

Cheers, 2AdEPT. One thing I've realised is that I'm super shit at even turning my mind to the many options/items that make the game easier. Case in point: that ring that prevents loss upon death. I'm pretty sure I have 2 or 3 of those, but I just don't think to use them. A dangerous combination of stubbornness and impatience, I think.

I'll probably youtube some vids of Stray Demon. I remember going down there to retrieve my shit that was not 5 metres away from where I dropped in and he fucking killed me. So painful. That AOE attack seems nigh impossible to avoid.

EDIT: Okay. So, stay behind him and let the AOE attack's AOE wear off before you move in to slash his bumhole. Seems simple enough.

i make it sound easy...and it is...once you get there....getting there might take a few tries!!!! LOL!! As soon as you drop, don't waste time healing from the drop as you can heal once you get behind him easier.....run straight at him and either roll to one side of him or even right UNDER him depending on what he is doing...sometimes he will prevent this with his random choice of attacks and you will have to try again. You will be constantly moving to stay behind him ...so much so that you may not get any shots in for a minute or more! But just be patient...sticking to the strategy is important for this beggar....probably one of my most hated bosses of all all time....until I just ate it and did it the way that was outlined in the original OT and on youtube.

bolded above: yep...its more fun to spank his ass but you can get just as much effect from hitting his tail...and you don't have to go as far in to hit it.

can't you just put the stray demon into a loop of butt slams? after he hits the ground stay right up close to his stomach and wail away. when he flaps his wings up to fly roll back, rinse and repeat. if it looks like he's going to use the magic attack just bail out and then rush back in when it's done.

anyways the thread made me 1000/1000 the game last weekend, so i'm done. probably not going to get the dlc though.

Wandered into the Painted Veil by accident. I haven't played the game in so long, any tips for these toxic bastards?

Place sure is beautiful though.

if you kill them with a fire weapon, you won't get toxic. Or just use a longer range weapon so you can get out of the way before they can toxic you. Backstabbing helps too.

This is my failsafe tactic. 60% of the time, it works... everytime.

Congrats on all cheevos!

Thanks. I don't really have any fire weapons and ima running low on arrows.

Just kind of running past them now.

did no one suggest you do the painted world of ariamis? you can kill priscilla there...and the world is pretty rad too, lots of nooks and crannies full of items, gear, etc. I'd say do that for sure..then Sif and then new londo ruins...i always save demon ruins/lost izalith for the end

he spider shield blocks toxicity....mostly Ijust avoid them as they don't drop anything much. ask away when you get tot he spinning skelly part...that's a whole different ball of wax!

yeah I was going to recommend this and to join the darkmoon, but Mick said he was not too interested in magic for this character.....otherwise he should join and go to panted world....but first he has to do stray demon and pick up the doll anyway right????

MICK - When you go back to asylum make sure to pick up this little doll item if you didn't already....you will need it for Priscilla and her level called the painted world of ariamis....it is a good choice after doing stray demon.

I think I am going to do this. If it doesn't work, though... You guys... SO DEAD.

Everyone is entitled to their own and favourite methods...demon firesage is almost identical to stray demon and I beat him like that....mostly...but like even the poster himself admitted.....the demon won't keep doing the same thing again and again forever so have a plan B up your sleeve (like beat it behind him if he gives enough space for it.)

Yeah I take back my earlier anecdote, people are fucking cocks in this game.

Started a new character - a sorcerer - just to screw around with the game's magic system and see if I liked it and kept getting invaded by experienced pricks who seriously wanted to fight.

I'm level 7. Yeah brah, let's dool...

Man, I am going to neglect my girlfriend so hard tonight. Breaking Bad and Dark Souls. Hook it to my veins.

Haha. Yep. Happened to me last night. I'm seriously done with reversing hollowing for any reason other than kindling. It's just not worth it. Also, I really want to be able to say that I finished this game without any co-op help.

EDIT: Also, much love to all of you guys. This has been quite the special gaming journey for me and I can wholeheartedly say that, were it not for this thread, I probably would have stagnated and stopped some time ago. It's been quite a damn while since I've put so many hours into a game that doesn't revolve around shooting other Australians; not to mention, this game has changed my perception of not only RPG-heavy adventure games, but games in general. I'll be the first to admit that DS isn't for everyone, but there's no denying how great it is. It is something else entirely.

So, without further adieu, let's keep this thread going! I don't want to see it go hollow.

That's unfortunate. I recently made a new character, was invaded just before the Parish by a guy with blatantly glitched/hand-me-downed gear, and he switched to a rubbish weapon that didn't kill me even after 5 successful backstabs. He just seemed to want a "fair" fight with a noob, and sent a nice message afterwards.

Sometimes you get lucky, and it really stands out - don't give in to those dickboxers!

I remember when I killed my first (and only) invader in Demonds Souls.
Such an awesome expierence. After that though every invader killed me, though It was usually a nice even fight. I remember when one went and hid behind a priest and since i was throwing spells I accidentally hit him so I had to deal with him and a NPC.

Anyway back to Dark Souls.
I played a good bit (Up to I think Blight Town) and never got invaded once.
Did summon a few people though.

Did the patch fix the online? It never seemed like it was as active as Demons even though I played Day 1.

Subscribed.

Exact same position as OP - I sold my copy and the desire to give it a really good shot has never left.

Will hopefully start again tomorrow with a Pyro. Any noticeable differences between PS3 and 360 versions? I can get it a few £ cheaper on PS3 but I know someone else who has it on 360 too.

It's so hard for me to get back into it after not playing for months. I'm in the painted world and getting slaughtered. I'm up to the Ice Caves on one of my characters. Crazy thing is I've put about 200 hours into the game across several characters and I've yet to finish the game. I loved it so much I never wanted to (and I've heard the last third pales in comparison to the rest).

dude I've got three characters and for a long time I hadn't beaten the game once despite over 200 hours too...then I beat it as all 3 and started new game + for all of them...the confusion only worsens after taking time away and coming back which I recently did thanks to this thread...oh man, I have spent some time getting slain and forgetting what ive already done and whats open to me, etc etc....joys.

Had a day of very little progress. Got cursed a couple of times, lost maybe 10k souls and had to trek all the way to the belltower and find Oswald to buy a purging stone.
Those god damn frogs in the depths.

Accidentaly aggro'ed an NPC and ended up killing him. He was a sorcerer of some kind so I doubt he'd given me much I'm interested in. Looted his corpse and found a ring that removes all sound my character makes. Now I'm a backstabbing machine, though it's weird to run around without the usual clanking and rustling of armor.

Wanted to help people with some bosses but it must have been a slow day online, only got summoned a few times and died a few of them. Gonna try invading people soon.

Still had fun. And now I can use the Black Knight Sword. It does great damage but man that power attack is slow. Leaning towards staying with my trusty Claymore and just upgrading it (already +5).

Tomorrow I'll head to Blighttown.

Oh, man. Darkwraiths... They're so terrible. I thought I was in for a decent fight, but one back-stab and they're done. Oh, well! I'm never going to complain about this game being too easy; I'm soaking this shit up.

I had an immensely productive session today. Firekeeper Soul, Titanite Slab, 2 Titanite Chunks, some decent leveling... Loved it. The Four Kings are next. How are they?

Four Kings are my favorite melee boss. You'll see. I made characters just to fight them. I sent maidens with either the Oolacile or Maiden sets to aid weary travelers in their quest to smite them.

Blighttown just drained away all my love for this game. What a dreadful place.

I'm at the bonfire down in the poisonus swamp, I've collected the firekeeper soul but I'm lost as to where I should go next.

When you exit from the bonfire, look right. In the distance you should see a 'lighter' colored area. Go that direction.

Cheesing is the best part about the Souls games.

I don't think I would have made it as far in Dark without abusing that cliff in the woods...

The Four Kings are next. How are they?

If you're a decently levelled magic character they will get demolished pretty hard.

If you're melee, then it's a slightly rougher time. Let's just say if you see all 4 kings then your souls are pretty much forfeit. I think I've only actually overcome 3 of them at a time. Then again, I'm not that good at this game lol

Something unexpected just happened. I invaded a world of a guilty when I'm in the Sunlight Warrior Covenant. Is that even possible?

I've only ever beaten them as melee....its so important to take them as soon as they spawn! even 2 on screen is trouble!!

and gwydolin is frustrating for me still, usually takes me 2-3 times to get my timings down on it.
