Breaking Bad - Season 5, Part 1 - Sundays on AMC

Am I the only one that felt like this was a bad episode? Who was the director? And scriptwriter for that matter.
It was, inside Breaking Bad's universe/standards, on par to the late seasons of Dexter. So much exposition, hand holding, unrealistic character motives/actions, poorly done reveals, lazily directed heist, among other things.
That scene with Skyler/Walt Jr. was just thrown in the middle of things, it was forced and out of place.
Lydia is a fucking disaster. Get her off my screen, she is not final season of Breaking Bad material. She's clearly placed in the story to fuck things up. Mike would not let her live after all she's done and shown.

I actually do think you're the only one with these opinions. For the record it was written by a long-term BB writer, and he also directed this episode and it was his first time in that role.
I recognized the guys from Mathnet before anyone else. The show was ahead of it's time.
The world is full of way more important things about which to be frustrated. Just let it go...

Honestly, I was expecting Walt Jr. to commit suicide in the latest episode.
Anyone that thinks this episode is the worst so far in the season, I really don't know what to say to that.
The first two episodes this season were the weakest. Episode 4 of this season was when things started to really pick up. Episode 4 and 5 were fantastic.

Doesn't Walt pretty much have him by the balls at this point? I can totally see Hank finally putting the pieces together and Walt giving him a big speech about "How's it going to look when you've been the lead investigator on this case all along while your chemist brother-in-law makes meth right under your nose? How will you explain turning a blind eye to all the expensive purchases; the watch, the cars, the car wash? You going to say it wasn't suspicious because it was from illegal gambling winnings? If I go down for this Hank, I'm taking you and that crazy shoplifting wife of yours with me!"
What do you guys think?

That's not real leverage in my opinion...you should have thrown in the "how will it look that you accepted money from me for your expensive rehab?"

Nah, that wouldn't stop Hank from busting Walt. He's a good police, even if the emotional impact of learning the truth will certainly knock Hank off-balance momentarily.
I could definitely see Walt killing Hank, though.

When he's alone and dying in his dirty puddle of blood, cash, and meth, he'll take a piece of that sweet sweet blue crystal, sniff it, cough, and die with a wane smile.

Well, there's that too...but I mean there's a million things. I don't see how Hank could arrest Walt without being called a dirty cop himself. Surely the attempts on his life, Hank's dealings with Jesse and everything else he's been involved in, on top of all the seemingly unique insight on minute details of the case, would spell major trouble for Hank.
I agree with Gondo, Walt may very well try to pull that off, but i don't see Hank backing down.
Honestly, Walt killing a shit ton of people and then overdosing on his meth to kill himself would be a valiant end for his character.
Walter dying from getting shot or poisoned wouldn't be a great way to retire the show/his character. Walter is going to die on his own terms, and I hope his death comes from his own meth or him dying naturally from his cancer(He would find out it's come back, and decides to just let it spread and he'll die under his own terms).

The whole show is about Walter not being able to die on his own terms, so I definitely expect that when the time comes, he's going to go kicking and screaming.
Great point, and I can add that one of the entire thematic themes of Breaking Bad is Walter struggling with this. The idea of dying under his own terms or not and the struggle of being on one end of that scale versus the other.
No, I agree. Just throwing that in there. Hank is pretty unshakable.

Skyler becomes the new Walt and takes over the business (original)
Pinkman finally gets the education in chemistry he missed out on in highschool, decides to use his money and become a chemistry teacher (addition)

What if Walt spins some story to Hank telling him he will tell the DEA that he was forced into this business by Gus Fring and that when Gus died, he wanted out and confessed to Hank then. Hank forced him to continue making the meth to pay for his treatment...

I actually think Breaking Bad has transcended good guys vs bad guys at this point. The Salamanca's will go down as the last true villains of the show.
As much as some like to paint Walt as the personification of evil & carelessness he still wears a very gray hat. The premiere spoiled the fact that he will continue to do so until the events of the flash forward, at least. Sociopaths aren't sentimental.
Yes, this is what we're doing. It's very interesting social experiment actually.
