I have a question about Grant Morrison's run on Batman. I just ordered the following:

-Batman & Son
-The Resurrection of Ra's Al Ghul
-The Black Glove, R.I.P.
-Time and the Batman

I'll move onto Final Crisis/Battle For The Cowl/Batman & Robin after that, but is there anything else I need to read before Batman & Son, or is that a good jumping off point?

Batman & Son IS the starting point of Morrison on Bats. So, that's where you need to start.

No. Morrison's run began shortly after Infinite Crisis during the One year later thing. I think there was a filler arc before his, but nothing that had to be read.

Make sure you read the Batman and Robin/Batman incorporated stuff after you are finished though, as it is all one big story.

Is Aquaman worth reading if I don't really care about the character? Only Aquaman stuff I have read was Morrison and Waid's JLA runs, and the stuff in Blackest Night and Brightest Day.

i'm going to say yes, i'm up to issue 10 so far and it's enjoyable despite not caring about the character previously.

Get the first trade, this current arc is kinda boring.

Also, it kinda bothers me that Aquaman isn't actually in water very often during this arc....

Sweet, thanks. Yeah, I'll definitely be moving onto Batman and Robin/Batman Incorporated after. I'll probably wait for for the Absolute version of Batman and Robin, though.

Comixology would have a sale on my favorite Bat character when I'm trying to maintain a budget. Life's not fair. lol

I say yes. One of my favorite DC books since the relaunch. My only real problem with it is that the pacing has been pretty damn slow during this current arc.

Also, it kinda bothers me that Aquaman isn't actually in water very often during this arc....

I don't know. I kind of like Johns showing that Aquaman can work without being underwater the whole time. That said, it probably is time that the King of the Seas actually...goes back to the sea. lol

Thanks for the Aquaman suggestions. I'll check out the first few issues and go from there.

I finally got around to reading American Vampire after many GAF recommendations. I think I am all caught up other than the miniseries currently being released. I don't know if it would make my top 10 Vertigo list, but I definitely liked it enough to continue reading. I really like how each of the main arcs jumps 5-10 years forward in time. I just wish there were less side stories between those arcs. Not that all the side stuff has been bad, I just want more of the main narrative.

Thinking of starting either The Unwritten or Sweet Tooth next. Any opinions on either of those?

Sweet Tooth is worth a read at your local library. Pretty basic and by the book in the first two trades that I read. Unwritten is something that I want to get in on though.

yeah i can't tell if it's the lack of ocean on this arc that bothers me, or the presence of Manta

I've only read the first arcs of both, but I'd recommend The Unwritten. Both are worth checking out, but if you have to pick one, I'd go with the Unwritten. The mystery of The Unwritten is far more intriguing and the art is a bit better. If you want to read Lemire at his best, Essex County is my personal favorite.

I've been enjoying Manta, and the revelation of his connection to Aquaman. The Others...I'm undecided. I like them in concept, and they're visually cool characters with fun abilities. But beyond Ya'wara and PoW, I don't feel like I really know them. Hopefully, they'll stick around for a while after this arc concludes. Also, now that I really think about it, the lack of Mera in this arc is a real sore spot. Her solo issue was probably my favorite of this run, next to the number 1.

Bought some new comics on Wednesday. Happy birthday to me!

So I bought the New X-Men and Astonishing X-Men omnibuses since I'm trying to catch up on the X-Men, but I read about how Astonishing X-Men takes so long to release that other stuff happens in the meanwhile, like House of M and Civil War I think. Should I Just read those 2 back to back, and then catch up on the other stuff? What's worth reading? I'm trying to follow the stuff in this post http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=28692451&postcount=256 but is stuff like Civil War and the Phoenix Endsong/Warsong not worth reading since it isn't listed. I'm pretty much clueless when it comes to super hero comics. I've mostly just read a few self contained stories and have never followed a series over the years. But I really liked the X-Men since I was a kid because of the cartoon and really want to get caught up.

Hoo boy x-men comics are pretty messy. Astonishing is pretty much standalone and well received. Some people like X events like me, and some people hate them. House of M was pretty important for the while marvel universe but I hated the event. The x folks pretty much sat out the civil war and all of the Phoenix stuff from recently is weird and confusing. I really enjoyed x-men legacy, but x-force and uncanny x-men force is the best stuff of late.

Everything I understand about what has happened with the Phoenix since Jean kicked the bucket:

-The Shi'ar finally decided that Jean's having saved their asses with that whole M'Kraan thing no longer was worth it. Like, she stopped a neutron galaxy from destroying THE UNIVERSE. I'd think that would outweigh her blowing up one star. YEARS AGO. Anyway, after years of being massive wussies, the Shi'ar finally worked up the balls and never explained technology to attack The Phoenix itself. So they did. The Phoenix freaked and went looking for Jean. It caused some stuff at Xavier's, woke Jean up, and she had to force it to put her back down. Emma decided that it wasn't enough for her to steal Jean's husband and life, she had to have the Phoenix, too. So Veruca Frost or Emma Salt or whatever set out to have it because she is every writer's special snowflake ever. Anyway, Jean went back into the White Hot Room to start putting the Phoenix back together (End Endsong).

-The Shi'ar decided that that wasn't good enough, so they ignored EVERY SENSIBLE FACT about the Phoenix and how it has possessed people like Peter and Xavier and Logan and decided that it CLEARLY must be genetic. So they murdered Jean's entire family. Except, of course, the one person in it who has the Phoenix. Also like, the fifth Summers Brother went nuts and took over the Shi'ar empire while Rachel was in the middle of trying to raze it to the ground. Along the way she met up with Zack Fair, who had the Phoenix Materia in his Buster Sword. Then the materia stopped working and Rachel's Phoenix powers flubbed, which was supposed to be a sign that Jean had collected those pieces of the Phoenix again.

-Emma's agent still wanted her to be the Phoenix, so Warsong happened. Basically the Cuckoos got the Phoenix instead of Emma, and Kid Omega was alive AGAIN. Then I think another one of them died or something and their hearts turned to diamond so Jean could never ever have that piece back except when she will or the writers forget about it. Oh, and Emma had the Phoenix againish.

-A baby was born with red hair and the Phoenix eye. Cable took her to the future to raise him because that's how his parents did it for him. Anyway, Bishop tried to kill the girl, and Captain America wanted to take her to the Avengers tower where she could totes hang out with Franklin Richards and thereby end reality. This is because Nova made a stupid "Epic Fail" comment which everybody got pissy about as The Phoenix ravaged a world. Then the Phoenix read a copy of World War Hulk and thought that was cool and decided to give it a go, so it started wreckin' planets on its way to Earth. Scott Summers lost his brains and decided that the Phoenix would save them, even though it was cutting a path of destruction along its way to Earth. Oh, and he decided to NOT tell Hope that the Phoenix was probably coming for her. Then he said it was racism when Cap wanted to take Hope into Avenger's custody. It isn't like either of these teams has been competent lately, but whatevs.

-The Avengers and X-Men fight it out, the Phoenix arrived and for whatever reason picked the five worst possible people to wield its power conceivable. Namor, Cyclops, Colossus, Magik and at long last, Emma Frost. The Phoenix Five decided to betray everything Jean had ever tried to teach them about the Phoenix by skipping the whole "Light" phase and abusing its powers from the get go. They built cool palaces, imprisoned Earth's Mightiest Heroes, and acted like Gods.

So basically, to make a long story short, Scott Summers betrayed everything his wife ever tried to do the minute he got his hands on the power that destroyed her life. Another part of that power was given to a woman who played a key piece in creating the Dark Phoenix in the first place.

I can only hope the Shi'ar do us a favor and slaughter every last member of Namor's, Scott's, Piotr's and Emma's families as a punishment for it. This will never happen because.

Guys I just read Batman and the Monster Men and Mad Monk and I loved both.

Matt Wagner didn't write any more bat books after those?

Both stories felt like they were the middle of a big arc, like we're missing the first and last series. The first one should deal with the Red Hood and the last with Joker and Robin.

I want to read those stories!!!

My eyes! My brain! I LOOKED DIRECTLY AT CORVOSOL'S X-POST AND NOW I"M TRYING TO THINK ABOUT X-HISTORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHY WOULD ANYONE DO THIS?????????????????????????????

You bought two great x-books in new x-men and astonishing, you could check out House of M since it's scarlet witchy and somewhat fun, then just migrate to Uncanny X-Force, Schism, and Wolverine and the X-Men because those three are great. Fill in wiki spoilers with the rest or read Avengers vs X-Men for some current continuity to prepare the way for the Marvel Now relaunch starting in October, but Bendis will be the one in charge of the X-verse and that's a scary proposition for some.

I've disliked every Hope event i read, Messiah Complex and Second Coming to be specific, so my best advice on that would be wiki spoiler it, neither one have deep stories and just spin the wheels through 12 issues a piece.

The minute? Gross misrepresentation. He started off trying to save the remnants of the mutant race.

Also, read New X-Men and then let me know if Emma Frost hasn't evolved since she was in the Hellfire Club.

Blacksad is great stuff! Never heard of Last Days of American Crime but now I'm interested--looked up some of the art to make sure it isn't the color-vomit that his UXF run is. Also, glad that The Unwritten is being talked about. Such a good fucking book. The issue with Pauly Bruckner's introduction, 12, is one of my favorite issues of any comic.

Spider-Men OHC is the only half off trade at dcbs that i'm semi-interested in, despite being by Bendis. Is it worth $12.49 so far?

I don't know much about it aside from it's written by Remender and the art looks pretty good. Also UXF color vomit? I hope you're not dissing Dean da God White or someone is gonna have to hold me back

So I finally got around to reading amazing spider-man 691 again. Or at least skimmed it this time as I already read it. The back half of it is really pretty brilliant. The character progression makes sense, some of the comments spidey makes are cold as fuck but he has slowly been becoming that way.

Dan Slott is definitely having the best spiderman run in how long now? LONG. I just hope nothing TOO insane happens in issue 700.

The way he's hyping it up on twitter says it's nuts.

All his interviews say it's gonna be a seismic shift in the MU. He had to call up a bunch of writers and say, yeah you can't ignore what's happening in ASM #700 because it's so big. After #700, he's not gonna do any interviews for awhile because so many people will want his head, his answering machine will say, "Just keep reading".

I'm equal parts excited and terrified on what he plans to do, but he's definitely been setting up a LOT of dominoes for his big endgame.

Spider-jammers, Alpha (which cannot possibly have a good ending), goblins at war, and apparently Doc Ock figures out his identity. Just going by what's coming 700 is going to well who knows.

Alpha will be the main bad guy for Marvel now and will have been created with uncle ben's sperm and gwen.

Nah, I should clear that up--Dean White is fucking legit. But even his skills couldn't save those few issues. So, the coloring is good and all but it's on top of straight poop, which makes it all look like strange colored poop.

Flash #11: no Manapul art, not that much happened this issue. New 52 overall seems to lack excitement and has really slow progression. At the end of Swamp Thing #11 where
Animal Man meets Alec and tells him they need to hop through the goo portal to rotworld together
i thought " well, that was about a year. 22 issues for Animal Man and Swamp Thing combined, to get to this moment" As much as i hate double shipping, it's taking forever to tell a story and i feel like i'm in non-stop build and stall mode without any payoffs. I'm not excited to read ANY dc book on my pull list despite ordering 15 books. ( I haven't read Wonder Woman #12 or Batman #12, i have high hopes for those based on reviews/talk, maybe those books will get me out of the dc rut)

it scares me. The reason I say I don't want anything insane is because I don't want him to feel like he has to shoe-horn some BIG moment like OMG PETER PARKER IS DEADDD just because it's the 700th issue. I mean I doubt he will go that far, and if he does do that I doubt it will be permanent and maybe just have it be a story arc. But I'm not sure how I'd react to that.

Wasn't there a rumour or something that Alpha was going to become Spidey's sidekick, lol. I just don't know what to think from all the interviews/stuff I've read. Guess we just wait. I could see Parker's identity being revealed though to the world. And that causing him to do something. But I can't imagine what.

One of the big reasons they did OMD was so they can put the rabbit back in the hat with the secret identity. They're not gonna reveal that again; it closes off more stories then it opens, and that's the death of serial storytelling. Plus, I never liked the idea of EVERYBODY knowing Peter is Spidey. It makes Peter Parker a world (in)famous celebrity, which is completely against the "mostly regular guy who could be you" idea of the character.

Reading Azzarello's interviews for Wonder Woman is fun cause it's always just him saying, "Give me some time to work here, brahs. I got this."

I feel like someone is going to die in Spidey 700. Not Spidey, and probably not Alpha, but someone. Beyond that, no idea what Dan could be plotting. It worries me a little.

that makes sense. I'm just not picturing what can possibly happen that is such a big deal for the MU.

Like I said man, excitement mixed with fear. They got a good thing going on here, and I don't want them to fuck it up over shock value.

In Slott We Trust

Spider-Man "dies", Alpha takes over as spider-man or something. Then Parker comes back and is conflicted whether or not he should continue doing it or leave it to the new hero in town. Realizes he has to continue.

Event over.

Or something.

Flash #11: no Manapul art, not that much happened this issue...
Flash is a comic that I constantly think about dropping from my pull-list but end up keeping at the last minute. Manapul's art and paneling is great and I love all of the different ways he draws the title pages that say "DC proudly presents The Flash". Good shit there, but the concepts have been better than the writing, which I think is super clinical, and the handling of the Rogues is fucking awful. Also their redesigns are fucking lame--sleeveless buffmcstrong Captain Cold. I miss the Rogues from Rogues' Revenge is basically what I'm saying.

No way, they did that with the clone shit already.

Check out Batman Inc. I don't feel it's better than WW or Batman but it's up there among the best of DC right now. I agree with you though that the New 52 has been mediocre lately. I remember how excited I was to pick up Animal Man for the first several months but now it's like "meh".
