Romney campaign disagrees with Akin rape comments

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is distancing himself from a Missouri congressman who says a woman's body "has ways" to prevent pregnancy after rape.

Romney's campaign on Sunday said Romney and his running mate, Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, disagree with Todd Akin's comments. Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul says Romney's administration would not oppose abortion in cases of rape.

Romney/Ryan disagreement is thstill the most relevant, practical criticism whether there is hypocrisy or not.

Both sides of the aisle (and particularly the Republican aisle) have people who will agree with and defend whatever the party says. This becomes impossible, however, when someone within the party criticizes the statements; then these automatic yeasayers have to choose between two Republicans, and the choice becomes much less obvious for them.

I don't know what to think if Missouri voters elect this guy.

That question about why GAF leans to the left? This is a pretty good answer... the GOP is the anti-science party and the fact that there are people like this LEADING polls to be a part of the US Senate is emblematic of the problem. The fact that the GOP is up in arms about a Biden gaffe and not demanding an apology from Akin is absolutely hilarious.

It's impossible to even negotiate with people like this. That being said, this ought to encourage millions in this country that, despite a lack of education, you too can run for political office.

Pretty much. He won the primary earlier this month, although he has until this Tuesday to drop out of the race. Given the defiant tone in that press release, I predict he won't drop out.
 
Republicans would probably hate it, but there really should be a basic logic test before you qualify for office. Being a popular individual over a certain age is not enough any more.

Funny enough, these are the same people who try to enact ID checks at voting booths XD
 
I have a hard time taking the Rep. party seriously when the people representing them are saying things like this. Like, every new story about some dumbshit thing a politician says makes me wonder how this person is in any position of power or potential to be.

People need to not be so blindly voting just because someone's name has an -R beside it. Politicians are getting legitimately scary/nuts and they really need to be shut down. Set an example that this should not be what we are basing a political party on.

Like seriously? This guy should have no political future AT ALL after saying something as offensive and outright full of lies and insanity as that.
 
And to think I was just watching Meet the Press this morning where Giuliani was lamenting that Republicans are more scrutinized for their comments. Biden's gaffes don't seem so bad as the campaign season heats up.

Abomination in that passage is clearly referring to the shellfish and stuff, not to people who eat them. And that book doesn't have much of a concept of eternal damnation (In the Old Testament, God's punishments generally occur in the present world). The New Testament explicitly undoes Kosher law anyways, which is why Christians can eat pork.

The two passages clearly contradict. How can he say that not one bit of the law will be undone on one hand and then say that it does not matter the next?

What does homosexuality have to do with shellfish anyway and why are you telling me what I should have brought up?

Nothing, but at least the proclamations against that aren't really contradicted anywhere in the NT, from what I know, while the abolishment of Old Testament dietary restrictions is a pretty non-controversial view despite the existence of the verse you quoted.

I'm not a Christian nor a Bible scholar, so I don't want to derail the thread further with this kind of discussion.

How many people, Republican or Democrat, would pass such a test? Here are some quotes from Obama:

Me neither and I felt bad about the derail as well but I can't help myself sometimes because I find the bible facinating.

On topic, I just can't believe anyone could honestly think that if someone got pregnant after a rape then it really was not rape. I can't begin to imagine what basic lack of compassion and empathy in a persons mind would allow such a thought to even begin to grow in one's head, let alone to allow it to come out of their mouth in public.

In less nice terms he sounds like a real sub-human piece of shit. Actually my dog has more compassion so I'll go with sub-mammal instead.

I don't think a politician's ability to mouth standard Christian pieties suggests he cannot use logic.

But I doubt Dem politicians would do much better on a logic test than their GOP counterparts. Rigorous analytical thinking is not an important skill to become a Congressman or Senator.

I like to think it's just a rationalization that allows him to oppose all forms of contraception like the morning-after pill. The first thing he says is that rapes rarely lead to pregnancy, so he wants to believe that it's a case that almost never happens. So it's not something he thinks he needs to consider when making law.

It's wrong on all sorts of levels, though, especially when you start trying to parse a phrase like "legitimate rape", and see how damaging that rationalization can get when it tries to protect itself from cognitive dissonance.

Except that is precisely what he is: A representative of the right. He is nominated to become an elected official, a member of the Republican parry, and represent his constituents in Congress and he represents the party pretty much any time he opens his mouth to comment on anything. That's what a politician is.

According to women interviewed by David Reardon of the Elliot Institute for his book, Victims and Victors: Speaking Out About Their Pregnancies, Abortions, and Children Resulting from Sexual Assault, women who abort pregnancies caused by rape have a "more difficulty getting over the rape" than those women who carry the baby to term. The abortion is a second act of violence upon their bodies - one to which they, themselves, consent (unlike the rape).

It may take an ad featuring some of those women saying that about rape, but this could help expose another horrendous aspect of the abortion debate AND help Todd Akin win the Senate race in Missouri.

Very few, admittedly. Especially with the majority of constituents as theists. If that's what it took to take religion out of politics I'd still be up for it, though XD

Of course, even if the test was made specifically to be sensitive to religion this representative's quote would still fail him in a number of ways, but such a test would be pretty much worthless.

I swear, if this doesn't get young folks voting, I'm not sure what will. The right wing base was voting for him anyway but the vast majority of Missouri can't be this ignorant.
