Is GAF too strict?

For a forum of this size, definitely not too strict. It's what keeps NeoGAF the forum it is today.

This is coming from someone that was just banned for a month. I opened my mouth and said something political in a very sensitive topic. That's the kind of stuff that gets out of hand really quickly. Also the part where I skipped passed the rules of that thread to get a quick post in. In retrospect I had that one coming.

I have no idea why the people in that thread were banned.

I guess this is the place to say that I hate when mods ban a bunch of people in a thread and lock the thread without saying anything. If you're gonna machinegun users out of existence, and close a thread, is a single post saying why stuff is unacceptable out of the question?

Without a doubt, secrecy about bannings and thread closures is the worst thing about moderation on GAF.

I agree. I don't see why it is not explained why members, especially particularly popular/infamous members, get banned. Worst case scenario: the rest of us learn something.

Banning people for objectifying women maybe? That's what it looks like.

Really?

It's good to see tough moderation, it keeps GAF to a high standard.

It's just so inconsistent even within a thread

For example This is bannable, while this is not.

He was clearly just trying to get miles on his poke walker under that blanket. It's funny, as much as I hate ign (and it seems the world agrees due to their forum being dead now), this is one thing I recall them doing right. They had an appeal system as well as putting a tag under the offending post saying User was banned for this reason.

I can't believe I said something good about ign

I think consistency is really a false virtue (or, you know, a hobgoblin). The goal isn't to ban people for certain prescribed behaviors, it's to ban people for making the board worse. Doing that requires context -- which inevitably means that some people will be banned for stuff others won't be, because of the context of the thread and/or their posting history.

I don't think post history should be a factor here unless it really matters, and in terms of context, it was the same thread. I'd like to note I do not wish for that other user to be banned in order for the sake of consistency, I don't really agree with the other ban, but then I'm not really sure why it happened and I don't personally post like that.

For clarification on that thread:

Posters were banned for a variety of reasons (masturbation/sex comments, show us pics, etc.); none of these things are appropriate in any other thread and there was no reason to believe they were okay in that thread.

No one was permed. The bans issued were fairly short in duration. Even the juniors got slaps on the wrist; this was a relatively leniently moderated topic.

Oh man I was speaking to bill0527 on Skype and he is pissed with you cashman, he trashed his living room whilst shouting profanities and stormed out of the front door...

So masturbation jokes are off limits now...or always was?

It might be time for a new FAq of what is off limits. The tits/pics or GTFO stuff I get (sort of) but the other stuff seems to be picky. BUT if it was a known fact rather than the mine-field it is now, it would be better.

Thanks for clarifying why they got banned tho. I now know at least.

Yeah, some sort of explaination for that bloodbath would have been nice.

Edit: never mind.

Ah ok. That's not too bad at all then I suppose.

This is why context into bannings can be a good thing. Thanks.

The Skype chat is still active, the lounge is still empty but it's a complete state, I can hear shouting outside and a car alarm.

Edit - Police Siren...

I've seen literally thousands of masturbation jokes and sex comments on this forum, in threads about every topic imaginable, that haven't resulted in a ban.

Soon we won't be able to talk about people who are attractive. As much as some people claim gaf is anti religion, it's feeling pretty christian up in here :p

see? I was right all along.

Don't say such stupid crap and you won't get banned.

There was a lot of arguing and I heard a loud smash, but things seem to be winding down. I still don't know what's going on though.

Edit - Holy shit!

Now one of the mods will tell you it isn't a new rule, its always been there and nothing has changed.

that's not the issue
the issue is that I (and I think many others) have never seen people get banned for saying these kind of stupid things and god knows we had a lot of friend over or roommate having sex etc threads over the years

there was no update that this is now enforced or anything, just a thread popped up where pretty much everyone got banned
but, well I guess people know now

The context was... implying the OP would be thinking of an attractive female while touching his penis. Which as far as I'm aware is perfectly acceptable to talk about on this forum.

Ya I am pretty sure we have had a lot of threads where people ask for pics. I seem to even remember threads where if someone was bragging and didn't post pics they could end up banned.

Just like making hot girl threads, nobody ever learns.
