Really? I thought Fog Bank blocked all combat damage. Only really play limited though so I guess it doesn't apply as much to me.

You assign lethal (2) to fog bank and the rest tramples over. It's irrelevant that the combat damage is prevented because fog bank only states "Prevent all combat damage that would be dealt to and dealt by Fog Bank." This has nothing to do with what amount of damage is lethal.

This is the exact reason why Deathtouch + Trample is realllllly broken. You assign 1 damage (which is lethal) to all blockers and the rest tramples regardless of the blockers' toughness.

Just disbanded my one-man 250 pack clan :( Can I get an invite to the neogaf one? I'm getting back into AVR limited so I can finally redeem, and I don't want the "packs earned" to go to waste by not being in a clan.

EDIT: Yay! Got a couch to crash on 3 miles from GP worcester!

250 packs? Mostly from drafts? I'd like to know how much money you put in total if you remember

I'm trying to go infinite in pauper.... So far I'm 12 tix out of dailies and 20 tix out of deck building. No packs so far =(

If you can choose to assign only one damage with deathtouch, why cant you choose to assign only one damage without deathtouch. If an opponent is at 4 life why can't you just say, one damage to the creature and the rest tramples over? Or does the damage to the blocker HAVE to be lethal?

Half from drafts, half from modern. This is a couple months worth.

I'm infinite. The only time I put tix into the account are when I get drunk and decide it'd be a good idea to draft, or when I'm too lazy to sell cards I drafted to bots.

It's basically the rules of trample and the term "lethal damage"

How much did you spend on the modern deck? How long did it take you to go infinite? Do you play 8-4?

That's the most important rule.

Even with regular combat without trample/deathtouch, after the order of blockers is assigned (this is ALWAYS done first), then damage is assigned. You cannot assign damage to any other creature unless the ones before it in order have been assigned lethal damage. Everything in front of you has to be assigned lethal damage in order for the extra damage is able to be dealt elsewhere.

To answer your question, yes, the damage has to be lethal, before accounting for prevention effects.

1: Modern deck was something like 225 tix, but it was a while ago, so I forget. Half was funded by old standard winnings, half by cash. (I'm not even slightly good at Standard right now. I make too many mistakes with delver, and am not qualified to play it.)

2: A while. You have to learn a format before you can even break even with it. I probably lost over 100 tix playing AVR before I began to even break even/profit slightly from it.

3: Yes. Only 8-4. Otherwise you are throwing money in the toilet.

I think you got most of it dead on except for this point. If I attack with a 3/3 and you block with 2 creatures, i can break up those 3 points of damage anyway I choose among those 2 creatures. If I could assign lethal to one, or the other, I can choose not to as long as I assign all three damage.

Okay, I feel better now lol.

Losing my first two dailies hurt so bad.

Comprehensive Rules said:
510.1c A blocked creature assigns its combat damage to the creatures blocking it. If no creatures are currently blocking it (if, for example, they were destroyed or removed from combat), it assigns no combat damage. If exactly one creature is blocking it, it assigns all its combat damage to that creature. If two or more creatures are blocking it, it assigns its combat damage to those creatures according to the damage assignment order announced for it. This may allow the blocked creature to divide its combat damage. However, it can't assign combat damage to a creature that's blocking it unless, when combat damage assignments are complete, each creature that precedes that blocking creature in its order is assigned lethal damage. When checking for assigned lethal damage, take into account damage already marked on the creature and damage from other creatures that's being assigned during the same combat damage step, but not any abilities or effects that might change the amount of damage that's actually dealt. An amount of damage that's greater than a creature's lethal damage may be assigned to it.

Sorry bro =(

Shouldn't feel bad at all. Magic is a game of numbers; your goal shouldn't be to win every game you play, but fix the odds in your favor a bit. Once you begin winning 55-70% of the time, you can safely say you're doing something right.

My scrub moment of the day:

p1p1: Sigarda, Host of Herons.
p1p2: Druid's Familiar. Other cards of note in the pack: Banishing Stroke
p1p3: Thraben Valiant. Other cards of note in the pack: Mad Prophet.

Tell me what I did wrong, then call me an idiot.

I'm going to keep the questions flowing sorry!

1. Do you force anything in M13?
2. Do you follow B.R.E.A.K.?
3. What is your favorite color to draft?
4. Do you prefer control or aggro?

Looking for anything to get me near that win percentage, jesus man that is beastly. And anything beats more shockland debate ;)

1: No. I'm bad at M13..... Like, probably hovering around 50% bad. I have forced G/R and attempted to force mono-red before to some success though.

2: Heh, these have changed a -lot- since I started drafting. I'm assuming this one stands for bombs, removal, efficient spells, aggro.... ??? Kurve?

No. The acronym draft formulas are a great way for newer drafters to learn what is/isn't good in draft, but there are many more variables in the format in which BREAK and similar formulas stop making sense at a high level of play. Curve, mana balance, and mistakes with splashing all come to mind.

3: In AVR? Green by far. I'm always happy in green, with blue trailing closely behind. Green has the best 2-drop in a format where speedy decks are crazy (wandering wolf!), a bomby uncommon better than 90% of the format's rares in Druid's Familiar, and an an unprecedented 4 power for 3 mana at common in Trusted Forcemage. Blue has Mist Raven, which is all I have to say about that.

I'd probably say my two favorite combinations to be in are G/U and G/R.

In M13 it's a tossup. I still probably prefer green though, as it's a fast format, and the color has a ton of efficient creatures; arbor elf into centaur courser is devastating. A 3/3 for 3 mana and a 4/4 vigilance reach (so, colorshifted serra angel without evasion) at common really help!

Again, I'm not exactly a professional at the format, but I do like taking risks; there's so many goddamn playables that you can take synergy over sheer power and rarely feel bad about.

4: This REALLY depends on the format, but a good rule of thumb going into a format unprepared is to never draft control or mill. Aggro is usually where you want to be in both AVR and M13.

What Modern deck are you playing?
Kiki-Pod. It's varied enough to be fun and good enough to win.

Just read his M13 one. That was great. *won't stop at least trying to play WU every draft*

That's a fantastic article, and provides some good insights on why I'm so bad at M13 limited.

EDIT: Just drafted UR in avacyn restored. This is probably the most fun color combination ever @_@ So much tempo! My 1-4 drops are a perfect block, 2 5-drops, 16 lands, two mist ravens, thunderous, two lightning maulers, two wingcrafters, and all of the insane red common creatures.

I have so many humans I'm maindecking my cavern of souls for fixing, despite no playable counterspells in the format (geist snatch isn't always maindeckable in my opinion.) It's done well so far, and even prevented a geist snatch!

Just started playing a couple days ago and I'm four games in - pretty fun game. A friend lent me a graft and discard deck, and, while I liked the discard deck, I had someone get really mad at more for playing it, haha.

Probably gonna buy one of the intro packs.

On average, how many times do you draft per week?

Deathtouch + trample is why I loved basilik's collar so much. I miss that card. :(

So my LGS is trying to qualify for PTQ events. Tonight he needs 75 people to show up in order to qualify, so he's offering 60 packs for first place. Also just relocated to another nearby building, so it's a much nicer place :)

Excited to have some fun tonight :D

Hoping I can place well, but people will probably be playing their best decks, and I don't know how my GW humans will hold up. Wish me luck!

Good luck man! I'm jelly.

And Spine of ish sah lock + trading post is just dirty. I feel like a horrible human being while doing it. Lock destroying their stuff while drawing a card each time? So bad.

Reynad has been playing a mud deck on mtgo with trading post + spine + mind slaver + contagion engine. Mind slaver lock is hilarious, but he almost always times himself out :lol

Is it a temp lock? How do you get a full lock with mindslaver? But with spine, it's good but drawing instead of gaining 1 life like with phyrexia's core is just broken. Locking him down AND drawing an extra card? So messed up.

Think you need two posts to do a full slaver lock. One to make a goat, one to sac the goat to retrieve the slaver. You just make sure you tap all their mana and they don't ever get to do anything.

I don't think so, Metamorph and Clone are unique in that their "choices" do not constitute a a ETB trigger.

If you read the card carefully, it states "enters the battlefield as a copy of..."

It's a replacement effect, not an ETB trigger (there isn't a "When X enters the battlefield" statement)

No, because he enters play as that thing. It would only have an ETB trigger if he copies something that has an ETB trigger.

I know that Torpor Orb does not stop Images/Clones from entering as another card, but I don't specifically know why.

edit: It's a static ability replacement effect, not an ETB trigger. Torpor Orb doesn't affect static abilities.

Sweet, it's what I thought but just wanted to check since I'm building the sideboard for my Tezz the Trader deck. Is there anything to graveyard hate for besides delver and zombie? Deciding if I want a nihil spellbomb or not...

Edit: Ya, that's why I thought it didn't, thanks Narcosis. I just wanted to be safe rather than sorry. Don't want to keep them in when sideboarding in torpor orbs only to be disappointed. :P

alright here's my day:

1: Pickpocketed for $60
2: Leave behind playmat. Stolen.
3: Bad math in a trade because I'm rushed and exhausted by this point. -$20 in value.
4: 1-1 in both events.
5: Have to listen to socially maladjusted neckbeards making inappropriate homophobic jokes all day.

Why are magic players at large events so scummy. =\ I really think a straight man saying "faggot" in such a public event, even in jest, should be grounds for immediate expulsion from a tournament. Nobody did shit.

There you go.

Sorry to hear that Lucario.

thanks =\ worst thing is, without the $60, I really don't have enough to go in tomorrow without borrowing money. And I preregistered, and there's 6 packs waiting for me at the prize booth.

Kickstarter that shit.

No seriously I bet we can get twelve people to send you five bucks.

Greatly appreciate the sentiment, but I'm not begging for money from gaf when for all I know it just fell out of my back pocket during a round and some little shit decided they'd be better off keeping it. I'll ask my parents for a twenty to pay for parking and sell some cards to a vendor to pay them back and get some sleeves for the main event. It's no big deal, I just needed to piss and moan on an internet forum for a little while.

If you have cards, you're good. I remember at GP Baltimore I wanted to make enough money to buy a PS Vita.

35 cards later, I walked out with about $350.

I try not to sell to vendors unless I know a card is going to tank immediately; I can do much better on eBay or forums like MTGS.

However, I don't play standard, so I'm lucky to have some things I can unload to starcitygames tomorrow.

fuckit, might as well list some of what I have on GAF to see if I have anything anyone's looking for. Feel free to haggle.

(assume NM unless otherwise listed, shipping = $1, free with $25 order because I'm amazon or something)

ask about other commons/uncommons/rare lands, i probably have them

oh, and I'm also willing to trade, but this is literally all i'm looking for:

taiga
volcanic island
3 wasteland
4 force of will
4 vendilion clique
2 kiki

Deck is ridiculous. Went undefeated for two rounds and only lost due to drawing seven lands in a row while my opponent got out both of his pacifisms and both of his oblivion rings.... both games.

Here's hoping I can manage to 5-1 now.....
