19 people shot in overnight shootings across Chicago

Americans (I am one) always seem to think:

"Holy shit, lots of people were shot with guns overnight.

...

I better get a gun!"

It doesn't make any sense to me.

Everyone has to make a decision on what's best for their household/loved ones. I don't see why its such a stretch why hearing about more and more of these shootings shouldn't cause someone to look into responsible gun ownership for self defense purposes.

Did it occur to you that those people aren't interested in reducing the number of casualties, but rather, want to protect themselves?

Well, if I knew I or someone I care about was going down I'd like to be able to have a chance at taking the killers down with me.

Agree but as German.

Besides the so called "tight" laws are just laughable.
Not like people with the intention of killing somebody would care about getting them out of their home.

Not giving these idiots a gun would be the better solution.

the fuck is going on.

That's just a typical summer evening in Chicago's south and west sides. It's an epidemic there although surprisingly the murder rate is down a good bit from the 90s when it was about double what it is now (around 400-500 people get killed per year).

Going to Chicago in less than a month.

If you're visiting Chicago, the chances are good you'll not be going to a part of town where the violence happens. If you're white, that raises to about a 99% chance you won't be going to those areas.

I live about an hour outside of Chicago, and I literally just want to avoid going down there these days. I just don't want to be around this shit which happens on a daily basis.

It's almost amazing how quietly this stuff happens too. The national news barely discusses it, and it's only discussed on a local level here and there. I think that's because the problems that lead to this violence are so complex, and uncomfortable for people and politicians to discuss, that it's best to just leave it alone to some degree, and give the safe respones, ie, more police, and more gun laws.

and it just keeps happening......

It's all on the south and west side. I haven't looked at stats, but I'd wager that most of it is gang related.

Gangs don't have much of a footprint in the rest of the city.

these were'nt home invasions

again, thinking on protecting yourself you gotta ask, how would a conceiled weapon help u in all these situations posted in OP??

Most people that are willing to shoot people on a street corner, are not first deterred by any gun law.
On the other hand, it might be harder for them to get their hands on a gun if they didn't live in a nation with more guns than any other, and with a higher percentage of gun ownership than any other.

The day gun advocates come to terms with the fact that legal sales of guns and a legal gun industry pumping legal weaponry into a nation leads to illegal gun sales and a proliferation of illegal weaponry is the day America starts to turn this shit around.

Are you really so dense as to think this is isolated to things happening on the streets? The woman across the street from me had her basement door smashed in by a gang a few months ago. When I first moved in here, there were warnings to keep your windows closed because people like to climb into windows and push the screens open.

So are they connected or just a coincidence?

Sadly, porbably just a spate of random violence. Seems to happen anytime it warms up.

Another fine post.
Well said.

@Mammoth Jones
As I said the "tight" laws don't apply on people with the intention on killing somebody.
Like thoose people would care about having their gun at home.

Besides as Shake said.
Legal guns are getting into the hands of the wrong people one way or another.

Where do you live friend? These are street/gang related, not crime motivated.

So is this actually an accepted thing? That Chicago is dangerous you have a very legitimate chance of getting shot? Why would anyone want to live their, it sounds like my worst nightmare...

Well, it porbably doesn't happen in the neighborhood you would choose to live in.

Chicago is porbably the most segregated city in the US.

Its like Paris.

Yeah, might be time for me to look into getting a concealed license. Shits going bad.

What on earth makes you think adding more guns will solve the problem?

I live in South Chicago. The places these shootings took place are ~20 blocks from me. These shootings are gang related (presumably), but that's not all that goes down in Chicago.

The problem isn't that everyone does not have a gun to protect themselves with. That is a noble pursuit and any reasonable person wants to protect their family.

The problem is all the fucking guns! So lets buy up a bunch of guns so that we can protect each other from all our guns!

I don't understand, are these kind of crimes in the US really increasing or is it just the reporting of them that spiked up since the colorado shooting?

I wouldn't be surprised if it's gangs. A decent amount of people have relocated from projects in Chicago to projects here, and the gang violence comes with them sometimes. It was a really big issue when I was in high school but now our police don't fuck around and the town is mostly quiet again. Still, the other year there was a shooting of some Chicago gang members in our biggest public park right in the middle of the day when families and kids were there.

im not against gun ownership, relax.

I know people who own guns(home and business). But im objecting to conceiled.

Im flatout against random people walking around with guns in public, i dont miss the old west thank you.

I think it would be important to point out poverty as well.

Well, I guess it's all interconnected. Youth, guns, poverty, gangs, low self-esteem, poor role models. Then concentrate all those elements together in a small area and you get this result.

So is this actually an accepted thing? That Chicago is dangerous you have a very legitimate chance of getting shot? Why would anyone want to live their, it sounds like my worst nightmare...

It is concentrated in certain neighborhoods and the residents who are outside seem indifferent to it.

No no, what neighborhood do you live in? I lived at 83rd and Commercial. I currently live at North and Western.

Man, living in the USA sound like a nightmare everytime a shooting story comes up. I think i'll stay in Canada for the rest of my life even if the perfect job opportunity shows up down there.

Listen to the WBEZ piece. Guns are coming into the Chicago out of state. Where there are lax firearms transfer laws.

The get bought in Indiana and Mississippi and brought into the city.

There is a shooting and homicide heat map for Chicago and it is SO concentrated in just a few areas it is crazy. Anyone who visits Chicago would never know because these areas are on the extreme west and far south sides. Chicago to me is pretty damn safe if only because I don't live in the hood (I live in Humboldt park which isn't the ritziest place either).

Good luck getting rid of their guns. Remember, it's illegal to carry outside of your home in Chicago, yet these kids are running around armed all over the place. What makes you think that could change?

Concealed is already illegal in Chicago. So your wish came true, and it still sucks. I never assumed you're against gun ownership.

More gun control or less gun control won't change anything in Chicago.

Ah. I live in Hyde Park, which is probably the safest place to be in South Chicago. Near 53rd and Cottage Grove. Still, things happen here frequently, and I am all-too-aware how violence spills over between regions.
