That makes it okay then. Let her die. She's got a health problem and she stole from me.

There was so much more than that. He knew if Jesse stayed with her they'd both probably wind up dead. He said as much and Jesse even acknowledged it later. While he was obviously looking out for number one (Walt always is), in a perverse way, he was protecting Jesse. And he obviously had moral qualms with it - there were tears welling in his eyes - but he chose what he believed to be the lesser of two evils, the fact that it happened to benefit him was surely also an important factor.

It's funny that it's taken til season five for certain people to start disliking Walt, the same character who was outraged that HIS HARD EARNED DRUG MONEY was being covered to look like donations through his (crippled) son's fundraiser.

I thought he didn't like that because it was getting his son involved in his world, and that it would raise too much suspicion should people ask any questions about it. Not that he wanted to flaunt the money he had at the time.

It was all about him not getting credit and having to accept his own money that he earned under the guise of it being "charity" -- the exact thing he refused from Gray Matter based on his pride.

That's the awesome thing about this show: everyone who watches it seems to sour on Walt at different points depending on their own moral compass. For me it was only very recently (I must be a horrible person), but I know others who have been unable to sympathize with him since S2.

Yes, clearly that was always the plan. However, it isn't very subtle or believable, and it feels cheap, hence what I said about the show coming up against the limitations of Gilligan.

The transition:

Season 1 - He doesn't really do anything wrong, unless you consider cooking meth to be wrong in and of itself.

Season 2 - He lets Jane die. Kind of a dick move, but it's understandable.

Season 3 - He has Jesse kill Gale at the end. Justifiable. Before that, he's basically the same guy. Skyler forces him out of the house without the slightest opportunity to talk things through and later fucks Ted, so we really sympathize with Walt throughout this season. Heisenberg started to grow more dominant in the I.F.T. moment, IMO. Up to that point, he had done quite well at balancing the drug business with his family life, fugue episode aside. With his wife hating him irrationally (the writers' fault) and fucking a man like Ted, Walt starts to give less of a fuck.

Season 4 - He gives Brock a shitty weekend in the hospital and sets up a situation where anyone walking by a particular door in a nursing home at a particular moment in time would probably be injured. And he tricks some old lady into doing his recon work for him. He's becoming more of a dick, but at the same time, he keeps his family safe and takes out a major kingpin. Skyler is even warm and tender with him at certain points. Things seem to be heading for a reconciliation and happy ending, until...

Season 5 - Walt is a dick to everyone and isn't bothered when a kid gets shot right in front of him. In an unrelated turn of events, Skyler treats him like he just sacrificed a baby in front of her. The subtleties their relationship had in Season 4? Gone. We're back to Season 3 black and white irrationality.

The show is still great, but Season 5 Walt doesn't really feel earned at all. I'm still fascinated because Cranston is that awesome of an actor.

I agree with the sentiment of this post. Walt has gone from a relatable asshole drowning in his own bad choices, to cartoon supervillian trying to attach lazers to great white sharks.

I think he'd be happy if he got enough money to do a hostile takeover of Grey Matter.

ok, maybe then but I don't think they will get anywhere close to that much money. I know long term, whomever they sell it too could make even more but I still don't see Walt going for that. I can't figure out what else he could be dealing for unless it's just an ambush. I wonder if Walt's plan is to kill or get rid of the competitor's.

well he seems to be in movies now

Johnny Knoxville is Mark Wahlberg???

Also, if you sympathized with Walt during the IFT moment, you missed the point of IFT.

As much as I want to read that article on the theory, I just can't. I read one sentence and stopped immediately, lol. This is honestly the best show ever.

I think you nailed it here.

The only times I've rooted for Walt this season were

1. The wire thing on his wrist just because it was his crazy macguyver shit that is just tense and fun to watch.

2. Rooting for him to shoot/stab/strangle/kick out/give a ricin ciggarette to Sky just because she is the worst character and actor by miles on one of the greatest shows ever. Every moment she is on screen over mike, jesse, hank, marie, or even walt jr is a disservice to the show and hard to watch.

That's the whole point, though Walt is insane enough to believe himself to be a drug kingpin even though he's cooking his own meth. Remember earlier this season Walt didn't even want to pay Mike's guys to keep quiet, which is really stupid. Walt's a guy playing at being at a kingpin.

As for the whole empire line from Walt, there's nothing inconsistent there with the rest of the show. Walt's always been an arrogant asshole, just look at the way he refused to take a job at Grey Matter, plus look at he was in charge (or at least tried to be) in season 2 when he and Jesse were cooking and Jesse's friends were selling, or how about when those meth heads robbed Skinny Pete, and Walt told Jesse to take care of it and placed a gun on the counter.

TLDR; Walt's always been an asshole who thought he was head honcho number 1 even though there's no evidence to support this at all, and so Walt's empire talk is consistent with his characterization. Just my 2 cents.

whats the deal with people critcizing walt for not taking the "job" at grey matter? did you even watch the episode? it wasnt a job offer it was pure charity solicited behind walts back by skyler.

Any chance someone will set up a dead pool before season break? I figure the series will lose at least four of its longtime recurring characters before show's end, not including Walt.

While I agree this transition could have benefited from a few more episodes, this is where he was supposed to end up from the very beginning - "from Mr. Chips to Scarface."

The problem with that is, the amazing edge that Season 4 had is gone and you're right in that it makes him patently less interesting to watch. The good news is the rest of the characters are so well written that the show is still great.

Texas Couple Take A Breaking Bad-Themed Vacation to Albuquerque

The Harrisons, an Austin-based couple, recently vacationed in Albuquerque, New Mexico and made this video of all the Breaking Bad set locations they visited. They went to Twisters (aka Los Pollos Hermanos), Jesse’s Aunt’s house, Tuco’s hideout, Hank and Marie’s house, Spooge’s house, Hank’s workplace, the “corner where Combo gets it”, Jesse and Jane’s place, the gas station where Walt explodes a car, the gas station where Skyler buys cigarettes (and where Jesse gets his bike stolen), the Kimo theater, The White house, Saul Goodman’s business, the Dog House (where Jesse buys a gun), the Crossroads Motel and the White’s money-laundering front, the carwash.

Walt is awesome this season. Everything he has done is in character. Gus was the man, the kingpin, and he managed to take him out. He's always had an ego, of course after climbing the mountain he's not going to want to give it up. The Grey Matter story just adds to that.

I gotta agree with puddles... this season's Walt feels really undeserved. I know this path / characterization was inevitable, but I feel like Walt from last season to this season are two very different people.

I'm just chalking it up to hubris though. He'll get put into place soon now that we have another major drug lord in the picture.

Yeah I still wish I didn't read the "theories" about Walt poisoning Brock with the plant in the back yard. That would have been a nice surprise for me at the end of the season otherwise.

So the last episode of this half of the season is named
Gliding Over All, which is a Walt Whitman poem. Here's that poem: http://www.bartleby.com/142/271.html
.

[Further speculation]
Someone might have already said this, but...Walt Whitman has come up a lot of times before on this show. Walter has actually been "confused" for him: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFTGUwwzaeU

I've also seen books by Walt Whitman in the show. So yes, they're definitely referring to that poem.

stay the hell out of this thread bro. everything up to season 5's latest aired episode is un-tagged.

I mostly only look at the images and gifs, if they hint at spoilers, I didn't get it. There's only one thing I THINK I spoiled, but I'm not 100% sure and I won't confirm it.

Why are you in this thread and not watching Breaking Bad, BY2K?

That reminds me that I have a friend that just started watching the show, a couple of days after Buyout aired.

He has one of those Get Glue accouts. I swear, his twitter is updated every 2 hours with 'I'm watching Breaking Bad'.

I also noticed that with another friend of mine, who's caught up now.

It's something I trule love about this series, it's addictive, has the right amount of episodes and it doesn't feel like a chore to go through three seasons in one sitting.

Which is why I feel kinda lazy to get the grip again on Dexter, I remember following the first two seasons, but seeing all the episodes I missed, it's kinda daunting to get back to it.

I hope your definition of "one sitting" is very loose...

You mean episodes, right?

Maybe.

>_>

...I meant episodes, but I did blitz through the three seasons. Had to stay in bed a couple of months ago and luckily Mexican Netflix carries the first three seasons.
