Fighting Games Weekly | August 20-26

Extended series exists because of the following:

Player A and B meet in winners bracket:

A wins their match 3-0.

A and B meet again in grand finals.

B wins 3-2, to reset the bracket.

B wins again, 3-2.

Between the two players, the overall score is A's 7 to B's 6. Player A won more games, but lost the series because Player B got his wins later in the matches. There's an argument to be made saying that the later matches are worth more because both players are more familiar with eachother, but personally, I think it's bullshit.

I've only seen that scenario happen like 2 times ever.

They are two different series that are independent from each other and they should be treated as such, one person is already in losers so why give the other guy even more advantages ?

There is a reason no other league, competition, whatever... in the world besides them are running this rule. There is also a reason why they completely reworked their entire SC2 tournament system for this season into something extremely convoluted just to avoid ES as much as possible without outright taking it out (having too big of an ego will do that for ya)

in the olympics the USA basketball team almost lost the gold to Spain even though they were undefeated all the way to the finals and Spain lost like 3 times in the prelim. USA just had to lose once.

That's more a problem w/ resetting brackets once the players emerge from pools.

I don't have a real problem with the continuation rule. I think it makes it a little easier for the person in losers to come back.

That said, what happened in SCV was whack. I think MLG can be a great thing for the community- but they need to figure out their format and not change things on the fly without the agreement of the players.

That said, the change to the VF format was appreciated somewhat- folks wanted double-elim here because of GentThief, but only got single-elim.
