Yeah, I missed seeing Life from the Loam originally. This deck is shaping up to be a pretty solid value.
They did say Modern Reprints were coming!
(They've also learned to just starve the beast re: Legacy.)
I haven't played magic in like 15 years. Bought a couple of starter packs today on a whim. Planes Walker or something I'm not too familiar with.
Got them mainly as a back up while at PAX if my portable gaming devices die. Do I need to purchase D20's? I think I need D6's too right?

For life totals, a pen and paper or your smartphone will be good enough to keep track.
For counters, you can use anything you want, but dice are sometimes preferred because you can easily indicate 4 counters by having a die with 4 face up instead of putting 4 pennies on the card.
Never necessary, but nice to have. Honestly, pennies work fine as counters.

Thanks for the quick info. I went to a local hobby store to buy Magic cards. The shopkeeper was very nice and recommended a duel deck package. Ajani vs Nicol Bolas. Just one puzzling thing. There are cards in the decks with 2 colours. Sorcery. An example would be a card that says "Pain" which is a 1 black and "Suffering" which is 3 colourless and 1 red to cast. If i draw that card and play it, I tap the cost and pick the one side I want to play then discard?

Ah, a split card. Yes, you choose which one you want to play when you play the card, and pay the cost associated with that side.
Correct! You pick which side you want to cast. Those split cards are awesome because of the versatility.
On a related note- the Izzet v Golgari deck is definitely worth more than its $20 pricetag.
I've been weeding the collection to make space and Jesus Christ I own too many cards. You're partially to blame, GAF. I have a lucky friend who is just getting in, and he's about to get an ass-load of cards for nothing.

Dice are needed to determine who goes first, and can be useful for tracking how many counters are on a given permanent.
You might want to read up on rules changes over the past 15 years. Especially since you've never seen Planeswalkers before.

This is offtopic but does anyone use the dice to say what the attack and defense is instead of how many +1/+1? I have people at my shop who do that and put the dice up one for something like stromkirk captain that gives +1/+1 but isn't a counter. Such a convoluted way to keep track of stuff, fucking hate it.
Going over to the official page to watch some tutorials. It's amazing the longevity of this game. The store was pretty full of people playing Magic and other CCG's. I sold my Magic cards back in the day thinking my comics at the time would be worth more if I kept them. I was sadly mistaken lol. The shopkeeper said my dual lands from the 90's are worth something if I still had them.

I sold my Forces/Tropicals when Extended was killed off and turned into Type 1.5.

It makes me wish I knew what I traded when I was younger though although I probably don't want to know either. I traded for phyrexian dreadnought and other cards and the kid's older brother had really good decks so I'm assuming I got hosed in value but I'll never know. Really curious what I could have traded back then.

I don't like it either, but if you learned the game that way, it makes sense to you.
Of course, if you ever want to play competitively you better get that shit straight. A lot of kitchen tablers don't understand that +1/+1 and +1/+1 counters are not the same, and they need to be separated. I told some of my casual friends to just simply add the numbers up to get the actual P/T and they get all hissy about how they don't want to do math. Jeez.
Don't even get me started on lands above creatures. WHY

Worst offender is the ability "Add X to your mana pool". I have seen three new/inexperienced players who thought that that meant you permanently got that mana in your mana pool, even if it was on a sorcery"
I'm worried I'll get hooked and have another expensive hobby to fund! I'm a 9-5er in my 30's now and I have little time to play video games as it is. The store I was at today was filled with middle school kids
I'm hoping to be a casual player if possible. I don't personally know anyone who plays anymore.

Speaking of which, I really hope the Wishes come back at some point. Completely with "corrected" white wish.

LOL, my friend does a land thing to be a douche but now he claims it makes him play better. I just mirror people who do it and they get pissed off and knock it off so I don't mind.
But ya, with the +1/+1 they say they'll remember and that's just not good enough. I don't want to slagstorm a bunch of 4/4s that should all die since they were only 4/4s due to a captain pumping one that is now dead and they always forget. It's the same people who untap lands as a huge lump so you can't count lands and always "accidentally" don't have enough lands, it's just a hassle to even have to keep having to double check everything especially when they get all pissy about it. It's things like that that push me to MTGO, so much less nonsense.

If that's the case, you might enjoy the online version more instead. There's always tons of people to play and different formats.

Casual play is best play. Get some friends into it, spend friday night with a few beers and a four way multiplayer game.
This. Even better if you get your friends into it. Simply boot up the app and play in your underwear against your friends who are themselves in their underwear.

Ya, only downside is if you're afraid of it becoming a huge time sink then you don't want an absurd amount of convenience.

Magic can be played as a 4 player game? I thought it was 1 Vs 1.
It can sort of be however you want. You can do 2v2, free for all, etc. There's a bunch of different game types.

FFA is pretty terrible IMO, but 2HG is a lot of fun.
EDIT: So last night I ran into an interesting Mill/Chalice of Life brew in the Just for Fun room. His plays went like this: Mindcrank, Chalice of Life, Witchbane Orb, Norn's Annex, Exquisite Blood, Blood Reckoning. I assume he had Day of Judgement or Black Sun's in his deck, but I never saw them. I was playing Grixis Planeswalkers, so I didn't have much a problem dealing with him. I got Liliana online and threatened ultimate right before dropping Nicol Bolas; he grumbled something about "so much for just for fun" and bailed.
Kind of a weird brew, but interesting.

Capsize is pretty much a wincon for U/R post or any other blue deck that can generate mana (Snap + Archaeomancer/Mnemonic Wall + bounceland = infinite mana).

Man, I have the worst luck. Just lost my second consecutive draft in the final round due to comedic levels of mana flood. In the first draft, I was WB Exalted, and saw all of 6 spells across the 2 games. In the second draft, I was UG, and after a competitive game 1 win, I mulled to 5 in games 2 and 3 and drew nothing but lands in both games.

I have a superstitious way of shuffling and cutting decks. If I have bad draws, I blame my shuffling process: because I did/didn't shuffle my special way, it fucked up. It's dumb, but it gives me something to blame other than luck, and thus less stress.
Capsize isn't that broken. You've fucked up if you allow them to get both buyback and counter mana and deserve to lose. A Capsize lock is difficult to create.
