Dota 2 Beta Thread 2: Real Talk Discouraged [Magnus, Teams, 6.75b, 150+ Shop Items]

Games last a long time. There are five people on each team. Every mistake that any player makes gives an advantage to the other team. The greater the advantage the other team has, the more difficult it is to win. By extension, it's possible to play a game of Dota 2 perfectly and lose because of your teammates, and many people would prefer to believe that it's never their fault they lost.

Since a percentage of the player base is going to think that they are superior specimens who deserve to win all the time, they will mercilessly harass teammates who they perceive to be ruining their chances at victory over the course of 30+ minutes.

Single draft is the one mode I really, really don't understand the hostility of the other players. If you're playing single draft you should know there's a higher chance than any other mode that your teammates won't know how to play their character.

One of the saddest moments in my game-playing career came when my friends who got into League of Legends reached a level of experience where they started getting incredibly angry at people on their team who didn't play well or weren't perfectly informed on matchup knowledge.

They used to be so nice...

People who played dota 1, and people who have played dota 2 for awhile should know all the heroes. I'm not saying they are pro with them all but chances are you know how they work. It isn't really that hard to figure out. You also have 3 choices...

Sure, but is it better to pick a hero you aren't experienced with who complements your team, or pick one you are experienced with if it means you're now going to have three supports?

And then either way your team hates you for it. (Unless you end up winning, and sometimes even then, because it's your fault they didn't win faster)

I'd try to work it out with my team, but I'd rather have someone be more experienced.

Also, the point I'm trying to make is you should learn all the heroes.

Fuck me, thought i was having a bad day when GAME didnt send me my Guild Wars Headstart key, so i played some Dota 2, got two chests open them and get TWO UNUSUAL IMMORTAL COURIERS.

Needless to say im not having a bad day anymore :)

I got the Unusual Murrissey Smeevil (blue flames unusual) and Unusual Lockjaw the Boxhound ( drops coins behind him unusual)

Not sure on what i would want, since i would probs keep one, but there both really cool

The one thing that makes me truly angry is when people take lanes that I ask for politely, and force me to play some absurd dumb lane like solo suicide slardar against 2 stuns/ranged, then they cry later in the game about losing, or try to blame me for not having items. Of course I'll give them an earful after that.

Single draft is the one mode I really, really don't understand the hostility of the other players. If you're playing single draft you should know there's a higher chance than any other mode that your teammates won't know how to play their character.

I think its because people are under the presumption that new players would want to avoid single draft, and that vet players who are familiar with it will want to play it. I random most of the time, so if there was a guarantee that I would be in a game with players that are familiar with all of the heroes, I would queue for it all the time.

There is no Single player help for the learning curve?

Or maybe 1v1? or is that not how it works?

That would be pretty interesting, a practice mode where you and another player compete in the same lane for the most cs in 10 minutes, or you and a bot (but not sniper bot, fuck him).

It just seems like exactly the kind of game i would want to play but i know that i wont get very good very fast so im skeptical :/

Single Player/1v1 won't help at all. It will actually make you worse.

The only way to get better is to understand how the team-dynamic works.

Even practicing last-hitting will be worthless in solo-mode as the situation is entirely different in an actual game, what with harassment, lane-rape and ganks.

You've gotta learn to constantly watch the map and when to farm/push/defend/whine that your team sucks. You just can't do that in a single player mode.

That said, you can play with bots, but it's a totally different world with human players.

It's going to take on the order of hundreds of hours to properly learn the game. But the good news is that there's enough positive reinforcement in the game to keep you going.

There's a lot to learn, but it's fun when you learn new things! Even if you suck to begin with it can still be enjoyable.

Did my first MM. I did relatively bad (compared to I guess vs bots? lol)..but thing is some other dude D/C'd or quit right at start..

so it turned into a bot match but with people..as in no recorded stats =S

First and possibly the last time I get this fat lol.

Too bad our Tiny DCed like 10 minutes into the match, but I had fun.

I am done with MM..every god damn game turns into no record stats so I pretty much as well play vs bots.
Why do you care so much about stats? Play for the game?! Playing with humans is infinitly more fun than against bots.
You can still see your games ib game history

I have seen difference with bots..bots seem to push more. With humans so far its a lot of...almost little action. Hence why I rather play bots. Bots fight back more often.

**Also it just one dcs and ton of people leave.

Ok! thanks!
I'm quite new to DOTA and here's my advice:

- Start playing against bots for a better understanding of how store works, feeling the controls, adjusting configuration based on your exp. I would also recommend you play with only one or two heroes at first.
- Watcch videos of commented playss. You may learn a lot about how and why things happen.
- Once you can beat bots in easy/normal, jump online. Don't be afraid of online play. Bots are much better than what you will probabl7y find online (they actually team work).
- Be patient, try to stay alive, but don't be a sissy coward either. This means: don't go alone against two or more people, use the towers to your advantage, don't rush when it's not clear that's what you need to do.
- Forgot to mention earlier: don't understimate the power of creeps. Creeps are essential to play this game, both to defend and attack. People think creeps are there just for farming purposes; they're not.
- Try to understand the role of your character. If you're a support, you need to help your carry and your whole team. don't worry about losing some gold and exp if that helpss your carry and your team.
- Finally, don't worry about winning too much. Do your best, but this is team work. Many times you will do awesome and will lose terribly because your team suck. Other times you will suck and your team will do fine. Just enjoy the game as it comes. Don't worry about sucking and don't ever believe you're under control of the situation. It will take you months and yearss of playing to reach that point.

Off the top of my head, these are the most basic tips I can give.

had my best game ever..died twice stupidly soloing roshan, for some reason i left the burning attack on the first time and the 2nd time i turned my armlet off leaving me with zero hp. other 2 deaths were dumb at the end messing around.

The coins is a courier effect, not an unusual effect.

But no really, what do you want for the lockjaw, I'm ready to starve myself for that chest.

1v1 mid with real people will help you a lot though. Practicing last-hitting is not worthless in solo-mode, learning that Drow animation and getting it down needs practice.

I asked this in the other thread but I wanted to know what are the best games from the prelims?

I heard there was a game where Naga went HAM on the other team, that sounds like fun. Also a pretty exciting game on Monday that was called the best of the prelims but I have no idea which game that was.

I got Invoker by randoming once, and I did much better then I thought I would (playing him as an initiator/support). I could definitely feel that with a few more games under my belt I'd be comfortable switching between all ten spells, the problem is that I'm worried about dragging down the rest of the team while I'm learning...

The thing about Invoker is, if you ever start messing up your spells, just try to calm down and stick to the stand bys until you do. You're better off right clicking and using a spell or two than messing up your spells and using the wrong ones.
