I'm surprised/pleased with the positive tone that's prevailed.
Favorite legendary ever:
Kingdra may be my favorite gen 2 pokemon (or at least in the vicinity of Ho-Oh, Tyranitar, and Scizor) but I don't think that completely has to do with his visual design. He's dragon type so that instantly made him cooler/better.

To me, some of the best looking Pokemon are, well...

It's a turtle WITH FUCKING CANNONS. WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT. So much boss.
People don't appreciate the genius here enough. At first glance, it's a weird fish. Then you look at its movepool, and notice that it can learn moves not normally learned by Water/Flying types - Psybeam, Bullet Seed, Signal Beam, Seed Bomb, Gunk Shot. And you realise it's actually a goddamn fighter jet using Remoraid as a turret :O
Plus Remoraid evolves into a literal tank. Maybe this slot should have been Remoraid.
Now this is how you make an imposing Pokémon. No unnecessary spikes, out-of-place bright colours, or silly sticky-out ears - just 360kg of sleek metal and stone (by the way, it's the heaviest non-legendary Pokémon). When you look into those piercing blue eyes, you know you're screwed.
A great design for the most powerful Pokémon in existence. Awesome colour scheme, a quadrupedal body type that says screw you to the proliferation of bipedal legedaries

How should design an evolution for the blandest Pokémon in the game? I know, let's just put three of them together! Gens 3/4/5 have nothing on gen 1 when it comes to terrible designs.
Personifies what I hate about Gen 2 designs. Let's take a cute fluffy Pokémon, remove the cute and fluffy, give it an arbitrary body shape (it's preevolutions were clearly sheep; what the hell is this?), then trace over that with the curve tool. Also, why does it have flippers?
It has a cool name at least; I'll give them that.
I could've gone for Loudred or something, but that's already been mentioned. I'll go for this instead. Very forgettable, having nothing that makes it stand out from the other Ghosts. And what's with the three-coloured eyes? At least they don't look as stupid now as it did in its original sprite.
Looks like a Pokémon one of my friends would make up when we were 10. Terrible.

1St gen they tried to design pokemons to be much like animals (most of them) and somewhat believable. Second gen already had problems with design. Yeah first gen had some weird ones but those were just few.
I can't speak for everyone, but I'm not a fan of 'design Pokémon to be much like animals'. You get some really boring stuff (Seel in Gen 1, Pidove in Gen 5). Bring on the quirky designs, I say!

How can you have Lillipup on there but none of it's evolutions, which are just as bad, if not worse.
If your qualm against all pokemon past gen 1 is that they don't look like animals and aren't "believable", pokemon probably wasn't the right game for you to in the first place.
It's on on a different level in my opinion. The other two designs seem actually legitimate for the Pokemon world, I may not be too fond of the second design, but it's by no means terrible.
Lillipup's design for the face seems like they were trying a bit too much to say that was it's schtick.

That's what, around third of Gen1? Not to say that Gen2 didn't have it's problems (Hoppip-line, Smoochum) but on average I find it better then Gen1. Ofcourse it's all just a matter of preference but saying that everything after the original 151 is worst looking is just... stupid.
Anyway we're wandering into the Generations War that OP wanted to avoid so shall we drop the issue and continue with posting our favourite mons?
